i keep seeing people say that they'll keep tenna in castle town because “mettaton is going to abandon him”. there are some discussions about this happening in blue bird app and i wanted to talk about it as well.

okay, so, the main point is: deltarune mettaton is not undertale mettaton. but i'll expand on that later. before we get into it, i’d like to talk about undertale mettaton, since he’s the one people keep bringing up.

frankly, i think a lot of people are kind of unfair to him when it comes to this matter, talking as if he were just some cold-hearted evil guy who doesn't care about anyone, as if abandoning people is one of his favorite hobbies.

we know mettaton didn't feel like himself as a ghost, and he thought it would always stay that way. on one of his diary entries, he wrote: “come on, Blooky. You know I'd never leave you behind. And besides… I'd never find the kind of body I'm looking for, anyway.”. but then alphys showed up and: “She surprised me with something today. Sketches of a body that she wants to create for me… a form beyond my wildest fantasies. In a form like that, I could finally feel like… "myself."”.

now, remember: alphys wanted to impress asgore. with mettaton, she claimed to have built a “robot with a SOUL”, which, as catty pointed out, was “like, SUPER relevant to his hobbies”. of course, asgore was impressed. if she managed to do that, maybe monsters could be free, right? so she became the royal scientist. the underground had to believe that lie, they couldn't know that said robot had a SOUL simply because he was possessed by a ghost. alphys and mettaton had to keep that secret from everyone, and so they did. even from blooky.

obviously, none of this means mettaton is perfect. far from it. he’s vain, self-absorbed, flawed and makes mistakes. it's just that things are not always black and white. it’s not accurate to paint him as someone who abandons others for fun. we have proof he does care: in the true pacifist ending he goes back and reconnects with napstablook and shyren, admitting he forgot how fun it was to perform with others. one “oh…..……” from his dear cousin on that call during his EX fight and he immediately looked regretful.

but anyways! all of this is beside the main point: undertale mettaton isn't the one you're giving tenna to. deltarune mettaton has never done the things people are blaming him for. as toby said, deltarune is a different world from undertale, “with different characters, that have lived different lives”. deltarune mettaton and undertale mettaton are different characters who have lived different lives.

honestly, seeing mettaton's dialogues in deltarune breaks my heart. he's depressed, bored, hiding away, calling himself a nobody. especially since we always saw him as that glamorous, confident, charming star. but now we have the chance to give him something entertaining, as he asked, which is a gift that “awakes something” in him. i think it's unfair to let him stay depressed, barely leaving the house, feeling miserable all day because of things that happened to a different version of him in an alternate universe.

also, look, i know some people want to keep tenna in castle town because they want more of him. i get it, i miss him already! but we all know that's not what he wants, right? he makes that pretty clear. he shrinks from sadness saying “i don't have anything anyone wants to watch anymore. i'm irrelevant… i'm junk”. he says he “just wanted to be watched”. and then when susie tells him “someone out there wants you. promise” he lights up, getting ridiculously tall again with that flower on his nose, full of hope and saying he feels like a million bucks. in castle town, he outright asks “please find someone to adopt me”... i don't think that's someone who’s happy about staying.

plus, toby pushed for that to happen. for years we theorized about the “something entertaining” we could bring mettaton “tomorrow”. on chapter 4, he even asks again: “Oh my… I'm so starved for entertainment… It greatly embarrasses me to ask this, but… Would you two have anything I could watch?”.

susie was right, someone out there wants tenna. as soon as mettaton gets him, he is finally watched again. plus, mettaton doesn't live alone! we know that at least in undertale, he and napstablook used to watch tv together at all hours of the day.

tenna wants to be wanted again. mettaton wants entertainment and inspiration. putting them together gives them a chance of being happier. i believe that's worth the try.

They're progressives, this bunch, even if he carries a hero's banner with its proud history and none of them ask him to put it away. They know there are good monsters, monsters who can speak eloquently and hold the fork right, monsters you can be seen with in public. Some of their best friends are monsters.

They do not know the monster who is invited to brunch knows solidarity with the monster who is not. Believes and understands the monster who is not invited more than the human who does the inviting.

"Isn't that a little harsh?" says a third human, and I have not forgotten I am outnumbered. "We have ways of killing monsters without blood now, painlessly. And, of course, a monster should be allowed to live if it never growls."

He has never seen me growl. Yet how loudly and endlessly I will, when I'm out of earshot. He's talking about killing monsters who cannot stoop to civility, about mother and brother and lover who were never able to mute themselves like me, and does he not know how small a child who can only growl is?

"To growl is not to kill," I say, and all heads turn toward me. It is one of those rude things monsters say.

People still tend to lump JK Rowling in with the category of ~problematic artists~ and I need everyone to understand that is not the problem with her. She is not comparable to anyone who wrote a piece of fiction you hate, or someone who made rude comments in 2015 and has since learned better.

She is far more like Elon Musk. She is a radicalized person with an extreme amount of social and financial power, and for YEARS she has been using that power to try to influence her government into hurting vulnerable people, on purpose. And she has succeeded. THAT is the problem with her, and THAT is why spending money on her books is so dangerous, not because her books aged badly.

Critiquing her work is fine, of course (I personally was never a fan so I really don’t care) but you NEED to understand that fiction is not the main issue here. And I truly think acting like she’s the same as the rest of any giant list of ~problematic creators of the week~ waters down how dangerous she is.
