Scientists at UC Riverside have demonstrated a new, RNA-based vaccine strategy that is effective against any strain of a virus and can be used safely even by babies or the immunocompromised. Every year, researchers try to predict the four influenza strains that are most likely to be prevalent during the upcoming flu season. And every year, people line up to get their updated vaccine, hoping the researchers formulated the shot correctly. The same is true of COVID vaccines, which have been reformulated to target sub-variants of the most prevalent strains circulating in the U.S. This new strategy would eliminate the need to create all these different shots, because it targets a part of the viral genome that is common to all strains of a virus. The vaccine, how it works, and a demonstration of its efficacy in mice is described in a paper published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. “What I want to emphasize about this vaccine strategy is that it is broad,” said UCR virologist and paper author Rong Hai. “It is broadly applicable to any number of viruses, broadly effective against any variant of a virus, and safe for a broad spectrum of people. This could be the universal vaccine that we have been looking for.”

if you have a bit to spare today, please consider supporting one of the organizations working to help those affected by the deadly earthquake that hit eastern afghanistan last night. thousands of people are in need of urgent support, and time is very much of the essence, as many victims remain trapped beneath collapsed buildings. if you need a place to start, here are a few initiatives currently running relief efforts:
UNHCR
mohammed nabi foundation appeal
islamic relief
afghan cultural society appeal
international rescue committee (currently running a donation match!)
afghanistan and central asian association appeal
HHRDS
afghan relief
STEP society appeal
human relief mission appeal
afghanistan has very little access to international funding and is dealing with a myriad of other difficulties on top of this most recent disaster; these programs' vital work to save lives is often taking place without the benefit of large-scale financial and infrastructural support. anything you can give helps them continue offering aid to those who need it most.

For years, the country’s rich and famous have used a little-known Federal Aviation Administration program to shield their private jets’ flight records from public view — among them Taylor Swift, Oprah Winfrey, and Steven Spielberg. Now this decades-old program has a new client: Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the agency carrying out Trump’s mass deportations. To obscure its planes, which ship immigrants out of the country on deportation flights, ICE is taking advantage of a longstanding program created by the private jet lobby, The Lever can confirm. For years, the scheme has allowed celebrities and Wall Street CEOs to partially block their flight data from public view. Its use by the Trump administration’s immigration enforcers is part of a mounting effort by ICE and its contracted private charter airlines to keep the planes’ flight paths hidden from the public. CNN first reported on the trend, noting that ICE’s charter airlines were requesting some of the planes in their fleets be scrubbed from public flight tracking sites. Deportation flights — like Swift’s private jet, whose enormous carbon footprint has stoked public outcry — can still be tracked in real time using other public data. But ICE’s use of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)’s private jet blacklist underscores how a growing push for privacy by the corporate jet lobby is being deployed to limit public oversight of ICE’s draconian immigration crackdown.

i have a youtube video about the use of jumpscares in horror games playing in the background while I work, and it reminded me of the single worst jumpscare i've ever experienced, which happened while I was playing a little game I like to call... Google Maps. (you play Google Maps by turning on street view, zooming in to somewhere that looks interesting, and clicking on any 360 photo views that people might have uploaded. i have spent many hours of my life playing Google Maps)
Anyway, spin this guy around to see something that legitimately made me jump so hard that I damn near threw my drink across the room
(more info under the cut if you're worried about what you'll see)
there's a fish very close to the camera

Lil nas x getting charged with 3 counts of battery against a police officer and resisting arrest as a black man going through a mental health crisis where the police approached aggressively and tackled him to the ground is depressingly par for the course for police and specifically the lapd and it should piss people off and instead people are making jokes about it in instagram comments :/

Heterosexual relationship culture is so alien to me and I don’t know if it’s the fact I’m not cishet or the fact I’m autistic but I hear so many things that make me go “Am I insane or are they?”
There’s a lot of hate on widowers and I saw a woman say “You cannot compete with a dead woman.” which is perhaps a reasonable statement to say if he’s constantly comparing you to his dead partner but that wasn’t what the post was about. And I realized “Oh my God, these people genuinely feel like they’re constantly in competition with their spouse’s exes and the ex being dead makes them feel insecure that they cannot best her.”
There’s also been an uptick in the ‘men and women cannot be ‘just’ friends’ rhetoric which I feel like is extremely dangerous and reflects the rise of fascism and sexism. Some of these stories of women feeling threatened by their husband’s female best friend have some merit and others are like “I feel angry that my husband still talks to the girl he grew up next door to and she and her wife are invited to family gatherings and included in family photos sometimes. Am I right to be suspicious?” No. No you’re not. I cannot imagine being you and living with that high level of stress and paranoia and constant torment and jealousy about your husband having a positive relationship with anyone who isn’t you.

Too many artists are held back by outdated and bad color theory rules, or even rules that are fine but have built in limitations that you should know and I want to set everyone free.

I hate that every social media platform has switched to a video centric format. I fucking hate it. Every app is so loud now. Instagram used to be quite. You could put on music and scroll to see what people are up too. Nope. Now everything has music on it or gets turned into a reel. This is why I fuck with tumblr. It's the quiet website. Just you and and the voices.
