Halloween Costumes for English Majors
Because I couldn’t find any good “Halloween costumes for English majors” articles, I decided to make my own. It’s pretty decent, but I would love suggestions to add to it!
1. Scout’s Ham Costume
Because it’s adorable and a To Kill a Mockingbird costume.
2. Sylvia Plath
It’s both morbid, yet genius. (For those who don’t know: Sylvia Plath killed herself by sticking her head in an oven)
3. Virginia Woolf
Fantastic writer, sadly commited suicide by putting heavy rocks in her coat pockets and walking into the Ouse river. Just get a trench coat and some rocks and BAM! Virginia Woolf
4. Moby Dick and Captain Ahab
Makes a good couples costume
5. Hester Prynne from The Scarlet Letter
And if you wanted a more modern take on it, you could do an Emma Stone Easy A inspired version
6. Any character from the Lord of the Rings canon
Frodo, Bilbo, Gandalf, Saruman, Aragorn, the eye of Sauron, you name it. Anyone who loves LOTR will love your costume
7. Walt Whitman
Grad a beard, hat, and nice coat and you have yourself a decent Walt Whitman costume (for Professor Buinicki)
8. Edgar Allan Poe
Because it kept showing up as I was looking for ideas and I figure someone would do it because c’mon, it’s Poe.
9. Oscar Wilde
Part your hair down the middle, find a coat with fur lining, and carry a staff. Easy peasy
10. Pride & Prejudice
Go by yourself or get a group together, up to you! Get a long dress with a coat over or get a long skirt and tuck a shirt in for an instant P&P inspired look
