Put it in a fridge.
looking at ways of presenting food.
Idea behind the fridge:
Rotary - motor from rotary of a kebab (rotates not only to cook but to show off the cooking meet)
Lights - lights make the food look attractive (I hacked the fridge so that I could control the amount of light)
Plate - Researching several food books I noticed that the type of plate used is very important (Developed a plate that fits on the rotary but I made it out of plaster. as plaster is the unfinished version of a product I will not be sing it but it is a good area of development for my fridge)

I watched a documentary on Netflix based on cooking using the 4 elements. https://www.netflix.com/gb/title/80022456
The most inspirational ‘Earth’, based on fermentation I learnt a lot about how microbes help turn raw ingredients into delicacies like chocolate and cheese as Pollan tackles the mysterious process of fermentation.
After this I made my own pickle, as a form of preserving food and minimising waste.

what do you put in your Kebab? what do you think about a Kebab?when would you buy a Kebab? would you eat a Kebab the morning after?
I conducted interviews of Kebabs in order to better understand what people think of them and get a better grasp on their connotations.

On a night out I went around and interviewed (mostly friends but a couple of people I met that night). this was a study in order to explore and understand the cultural connotations of a kebabs. I will also conduct an interview with my mum, who lived a part of her early adult life in Adana, Turkey (a.k.a ‘the birth place of a proper kebab in Turkey).
note: Despite VVS (vertical video syndrome) I decided to film in this format as it is more associated to apps like snapchat which are of course commonly used for recording nights out.

I am exploring products I could potentially develop in order to reduce waste. I made a list of the things that have been thrown away in my house over the last couple of days and the amount of rubbish is astonishing. One of the documentaries I watched on the topic (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLqkV8cP4xs) stated the 25% of food is tossed in the bins. So Ive started to test out products that would be able to preserve food that would normally go off. For example, this is a bottle cap on a lemon; it allows you to squeeze the juice out of a lemon when it is needed but, unlike cutting the lemon and using its halves it does not go off as quickly as it doesn't dry out as quickly.

Double trouble
I am now starting to look more towards food preparation processes. I will look at how waste is reduced, which is what I was ultimately trying to achieve with my project before. I was suggested to look at food preparation methods for example drying and rolling (for example sushi).

In order to see what I personally do with my food prep I videod myself after i got home every day. This showed me what I do with my food but I felt as if I was subconsciously staging what I do. Even though this has given me a useful insight I will do what I do normally then reflect on how I have prepped the food after I have done it, as an alternative to videoing.

Planning
As I start to plan and develop my idea I have decided that the best way to understand the chip fryer is to use the components with their originally intended purpose to do what I need for my rig. For example I will used the element (used in the chip fryer to heat the oil) to heat the food; or I will use the oil release valve to release sauce.

Starting to plan the machine. I need to get hold of a chip fryer to actually start making and testing. I will make these models out of solid materials and identify what materials I could use in the making of a more finalised model.

I’ve started to look at what i would like my machine to do or what it can do. this developed into the idea that I could make a machine to ready left over food. This idea came about when I was evaluating my work so far; I thought that kebab she's already cook and assemble the food so it would be more interesting looking at preparing food that was left over. After I identified this need I started began to ask people about their habits and thoughts on left over food.

a BRIEF moment of rest
After Fridays crib i wrote myself this brief to give me more guidance.
Aim: To extend technical skills on chip fryer machines and produce an in depth enquiry into kebab stores
Learning outcomes: On completion of this Unit you will be able to:
1.initiate and undertake radical and extensive experimentation
2.critical reflection on experimentation and creative intentions
3.evaluate and interpret the use of chip fryer components
4.be able to use components in different ways
Project Title: The Kebab Store
Rationale:
Make a food prep devise using theories of production chains noticed in kebab stores and only using machine parts from machines found in kebab stores
What is the use of each machine component? What other uses does it have? How do things go together? How does a production chain help?
You have only a chip fryer to work with. Investigate everything about your chosen machine. -What is its function? – What are the materials? –How is it put together? –are there and moving components? –how is it made? –how does it fit in the production chain of chip prep? What else is it used for? How are the parts linked?
Expected outcomes:
A machine used in food prep, made from materials found in chip fryers. Link each aspect of the machine to another.
1. Research showing an investigation of appropriate cycles links and chains.
2. Documented testing an d evaluation of your own experiments
3. A final piece – a machine used for food prep
You will be making your lunch for Friday with this machine so keep it clean and make sure it is all working before 10 am on Friday.
Timescale:
Day 1 –
1. Finish plans (how the machine works and what it does) At least 5 double sided sheets of plans
2. Finish animation – animate plans
3. Make rough model
4. Develop rough model and refine (evaluate the success or otherwise)
5. Get the chip fryer
Day 2 –
1. Take apart the chip fryer – list an photograph how each component is linked
2. Detailed list of what each component does
3. Set up how you want the machine layed out
4. Start build
Day 3 – 4:
1. Build machine –find appropriate materials
2. Find appropriate machines
3. Try different methods of connecting material
Day 5 –
Crit-
1. Gather all the research sheets, compile all experimentation, sketches, photographs

Points:
-dont go about the project as ‘I'm going to make a rube goldberg machine’
-working looking more interesting but needs development
-make sheets double sided
I will now be using the Rube Goldberg machine investigation as a side study and not as a main area of study. the fundamental idea is food prep but with regards to the machines used. I will be exploring the kebab store machines more as I think it is very interesting and I am passionate about exploring and understanding these machines.

I’ve started to look at Rube Goldberg Machines in regards to my exploration of sequential events in food prep. I took a look at ‘The Way Things Go: 1987 art film by Peter Fischli and David Weiss.’ I believe that it will be interesting to make a Rube machine that prepares food. I will need to develop this idea to make it more attainable.

I’ve started to look at machine parts. This has helped me to understand more of what I can do in regards to using machines in my project. I would like to get more custom to the set up and the way chip fryers work. I think its really interesting to see how engineers have built this machine. Even though, as I mentioned in my first post that, the older chip fryers are easier to understand due to fewer components it is still going to be hard to understand how they work. I am working on sourcing a small standard 3 pin socketed chip fryer as the ones used in kebab stores use 3 faced soccer joints; Using this will be over kill as the power required for it is extremely high and the 3 faced sockets are more complicated to find and use.

I went around Kingston and took photos of Kebab stores to see how the layout and machine set up effects the food delivery to customers. As a reference point I went to larger fast food chains like Five Guys. What I noticed is that even though larger chains, Five Guys for example,has a more automated method of cooking and preparing their food the end product is still the same. For example chips is the same as chips in kebab stores. I noticed that Five Guys is more equipped to serve a larger number of people and the taste might be different due to cooking temperates, style and oil temperature. this line of enquiry needs more development and hasn't achieved anything meaningful yet; I will work on this and try to develop it.
