“Oh,” Rapunzel sat back a little. “Are you a knight? Who do you fight for?”

“Oh uh—-here and there,” he said awkwardly. “Mostly in the army. I just—had things to deal with. You know, that type of thing.”

“No.. not really,” She replied after a second. “I play downtown with some people, a place called King’s Den. We used to play here sometimes though.”

Did he? She never noticed. “Okay, well, if dad asks, you never saw me.”

“Where are you headed?”

“What? I take this train every day,” Phillip said hanging onto the upper bar.

Rapunzel could practically hear her father pacing on first floor as she slid her window pane up and hung from the balcony before dropping. He tried to ground her, but she’d be gone before he realized. Screw him, all of them.
She picked up her backpack and violin case, headed to the Underground, and felt the freedom only once the doors shut. She breathed a sigh of relief, then glanced at the person next to her. “What?”

“Yeah. Where were you before, that didn’t have magic mirrors?”

“Didn’t really have reason for one before—so, it’ll take some getting used to.”

“Mm, yes. That I do remember, from the coronation.” She must have been lucky when she stepped out onto the balcony since the wind hadn’t been bad at all. Rapunzel began walking towards the door, mentally resigned to spend much of the day with the redhead. Her head turned to look at Ariel as they went, surprised by her alleged nickname. “Hm, what a terrible thing to be called.” She commented lightly and turned down a corridor, continuing after a half-second. “The gardens should be pleasant at this time in the morning, and nice to lunch in under a pavilion’s shade.”
“Well, in the capital it’s so windy all the time that you either have to tie your hair back or use really intricate style or it’ll be blown about the moment you step outside. But we’ve found ways to make tying our hair back our own.” She explained with a small shrug. “But when the wind drops or there’s a ball, we get a bit more freedom in our hairstyles. Noble women tend to wear theirs down more but I like pulling mine back and out of my face. My father always said I was a princess of the people.” She chuckled. “You lead the way.”

Rapunzel’s casual gaze turned into a stare for a moment. Did Ariel really think she didn’t know to take advantage of every opportunity she could spend with her long-lost family? She exhaled, relaxed, and nodded, chiding herself for taking the comment as anything but kind. Ariel was family now, it made sense that she would want to talk about her brothers. Feeling territorial was irrational, but she couldn’t help but feel it stir in her. Ariel had been able to see and speak to them regularly, and that had been stolen from Rapunzel. She just got them back and Thomas was already lost to this one. “Perhaps you should see to them, then. We’ll have plenty of time to chat later.” She suggested, trying to sound thoughtful and gracious rather than piqued. “I do want to go see my brothers.” Rapunzel added.

“Until then, I’m sure that Phillip will be staying a few days after the wedding and Thomas will be remaining for a few weeks. You can take advantage of that time.” She smiled. Ariel was a little jealous of Thomas and Phillip’s obvious love for their sister. Her sister barely spoke to her now, living in one of the royal residences further down the coast. She hadn’t even come to her wedding or her coronation. Rapunzel had travelled across kingdoms to be at Thomas’. “I’m sure that they would.” She commented.

She didn’t have an answer for his reply. In fact, she hardly knew what compelled her to say he wasn’t really an outlaw when he clearly was. A bandit with a pretty face, a criminal with kind eyes. He made a living off deceit. How many guests tonight had he stolen from? Those were her people. And yet, Rapunzel had difficulties connecting to them. It’s not that they were dumb or lackluster—though some were—but they seemed lacking in something of substance. The blonde wasn’t quite sure what, she just knew she felt out of place, somehow still on the outside of things. Her nose crinkled a little when he said he liked Ariel. “Why?” She blurted before she could stop the word, then tucked her lips in as if scolding herself. “Never mind that.” She muttered, then gave a slight nod towards the double doors. “My friends are in there.” Rapunzel had come outside for a moment of solitude. “Speaking of,” She inhaled deeply and shrugged off his jacket. “I should be heading back inside.”

She gave a curt nod. “If circumstances change, I’ll be sure to let you know.” Rapunzel said cordially, with no real hope in her heart of that happening. Even if she were to stay, Thomas would be busy, Phillip would be gone, and he had already refused her request to visit home once. For the time being, her place was with the Southern court and King Scar. “It’s a lovely reception, Ariel. I’m sure you have many other guests who would like to congratulate you.”

Ariel could see that Rapunzel wanted to be with her family, but something or someone was stopping her. It was sad really, at least to Ariel, it was. “Well, if you change your mind then my guards will be at your disposal. They might like the challenge, they’re all terribly bored defending me since we came home from the tour.” She chuckled.

“You do?” The idea that the nobility of Windmarsh allegedly cared so little for the appearance of their hair struck Rapunzel as barbaric, and her expression reflected her confusion. “I don’t recall that.” She murmured, stretching her memory to the very few Windmarsh visits of her youth. “But I don’t remember much from back then.” It wasn’t until captivity that the blonde had taken charge of her own hair, but it was still something she liked to do and took care with different styles and braids. Rapunzel wanted to like Ariel, truly, but it was proving difficult. “Where do you wish to go first?”
“In Windmarsh, we just tie our hair back and hope for the best wind possible. I suppose it’s easier when you were born and raised here.” She told the blonde princess with a chuckle. The redhead took the oil and examined it. “I’ll try it before I dine tonight, knowing me I’d probably undo all my ladies’ efforts to tame my hair into something presentable this morning.” She told the blonde with a grateful smile. “I’m sure that they are.”

“I know, the mirrors confused me a bit at first, too.”

“But don’t worry, they don’t do too much.”
“Okay umm—I was told I just talk into it so—this is me. Talking into a mirror. Hoping someone responds. I suppose.”

The offer was kind and presumably genuine, Rapunzel felt, but probably naive too. “I cannot.” She refused politely, trying to be a little more firm. “Phillip and my father want me away, and I will abide by them.” They had her best interests at heart and she trusted their judgement. Even if all she wanted was to be home. “I’ll leave with the guard I came by. But thank you, Lady Ariel.”

"I imagine so, the South must have never seen snow, not in a hundred years." She chuckled, imagining that if the South ever saw snow, the world was about to end. "You can stay as long as you like, even after the Southern court leaves. You can stay an extra week or day or whatever suits you." Ariel told the girl, offering her the chance to be closer to home and spend more time with Thomas. "Well, you could be escorted by some of the South’s guard and some of mine and meet your family halfway." She offered, wanting Rapunzel to know she was wanted to help and wanting Rapunzel to like her.

“The Southern ladies have their tricks to deal with the heat.” Though their hair was somehow innately different in a way Rapunzel didn’t understand. The blonde went to her vanity to retrieve a scented oil she liked to use to smooth her locks and offered it to Ariel. “You should try this. A few drops over the top of your hair should keep it sleek in the humidity.”
She gave a tiny smile. “I still become lost on occasion. The guards are very helpful, though.”
"I don’t think it’ll do any good. My hair doesn’t like the humidity and heat, I was born in the North so it’s used to the cold and wind and wet." She explained, confident that the updo her maid had pulled her wayward hair into would keep it from becoming unsightly. "A tour would be lovely, especially from someone who I imagine knows the palace very well."

Rapunzel gave a small, dutiful nod. Another day, another nightmare to get through on her own. “Of course... Until then, I suppose. Stay safe, my brother.”

Phillip in Sherwood Forest
Phillip cast his eyes down sadly. It was true. The islands were littered with lawlessness. Pirates, vagabonds, and all manner of outlaws. “Mirror me when you get put back at pride rock?”

Rapunzel supposed she was glad her hair had been arranged down for the evening, otherwise Robin's hand wouldn't be able to comb through it... or rather, gently rest in the blonde locks the way it was. The touch was warm and calming, a strange but pleasant sensation to have his fingers against her scalp. Rapunzel smiled nicely at his teasing, turning her chin down to loose the hand from her hair. A small part of her knew a gesture like that shouldn't be too prolonged. They were getting too close again, like last time, and she shouldn't let it happen. Last time hadn't ended so sweetly. It was hard to convince herself to act well her part, because he was right there in front of her... and she didn't really want to see him go. "You're not really an outlaw, Robin." She replied softly, knowingly. Her blue gaze lifted back up to his face, a tad more serious. "Why are you here, Robin?"
