While in the pool, he comes up with the seemingly bright idea of covering the distance between the Westerhazy residence and back to his home by swimming in the pools of the people who live within that route. These are friends and he takes it for granted that no one will mind, and he imagines that he will have the journey of an explorer, much like those swimming the English Channel. He decides to name this swimming route the Lucinda River after his wife.

The Journey

At first he goes through each of the homes with ease, met with greetings from his friends and invitations for a drink, which he gladly accepts. He takes a swim in their pools, and moves on to the next. This happens with the Grahams, the Hammers, and the Lears. The Howlands and the Crossups are away and he finishes his swim and is on his way, following the route of pools he has worked out in his head. The Bunkers are next and they too greet him and let him have a go at the pool. The shift occurs when he reaches the Levys' home. He notices that they aren't home and looks up to see the skies clouding up. After his swim, the storm takes full force and he stops for shelter at the gazebo. Looking at the Japanese lanterns that were hung there, he cannot recall when the Levys had visited Japan. The storm seems to have stripped away the leaves from the trees and they oddly bear the colors of autumn. He then goes to the Lindley home and finds the pool covered, and the family away. This break in the journey disappoints him, but nonetheless, he carries on to the Welchers' home. This is another climactic turn where he is faced by a dry pool and a 'for-sale' sign in the front yard. This comes as a surprise to him, because he doesn't recall remembering his friends moving. This makes him question his memory.The storm passes, and his moods lift as he moves on to route 424 in the direction of the public pool in Lancaster. Here he is faced with another harsh reality. He is aware that crossing the highway in his minimal clothing will prove to be a problem, but something pushes him to finish his journey. After being mocked at and ridiculed by the passers-by, he eventually crosses over and heads into the public pool. The murky, chlorinated waters, and chaos in the pool seems distasteful to him, but he follows through with his original plan.His next stop is the Halloran house. He is aware that the Hallorans enjoyed naked swims, and to conform with that he follows suit and takes his routine swim. This is a turning point because discrepancies in the facts seem to emerge. The Hallorans tell him that they were sorry to hear about his misfortunes, the selling of his property, and the problems in his family. He seems puzzled, because he has no recollection of these events. His mood shifts to a depressed and confused state, and the smell of burning wood adds to this (in his mind, it is mid-summer). But he keeps going. He meets the Sachses next, and requests for a drink, and is surprised to hear that his friend Eric had an operation three years ago, after which he had avoided alcohol. He swims in the pool and goes to the Biswangers and his confused state reaches a high, when instead of a warm welcome he faces a cold and unwelcoming host. He is even treated badly by the bartender and realizes that his social standing must have fallen because that treatment by a barkeep is a serious offense. He then overhears Grace Biswanger saying that 'They went for broke overnight - nothing but income - and he showed up drunk one Sunday and asked us to loan him five thousand dollars..'. We realize here that this is said in relation to Neddy, but he seems all the more perplexed.

Final Realization

He then heads to Shirley Adams' house, with whom he has an affair previously, but is faced by a rude remark from her saying that if he is there for the money, he isn't going to get another penny. He hasn't expected this reaction. We see a change in him, as the once energetic and warm Ned, slowly starts feeling tired and cold, and climbs out of the pool, instead of hoisting himself up. Looking up at the sky, he sees the autumn constellations and his misery and confusion reaches a painful point and he breaks into tears. He swims through the last two pools in pain, and finally reaches home. He is surprised to find the house locked and in darkness. He tries the garage door which is rusty. When he looks into the house it is empty, and the story ends on a climactic high.

Swift Passage of Time

Neddy lives in a world of denial and his act of repressing painful events has led him to lose track of time. But as we all know, time eventually catches up with us, and throws reality into our faces when we least expect it. This is seen through the quick changing of the seasons and the seemingly sudden aging you see in Neddy.

Changing Face of Suburbia

The suburbs are marked by an unmentioned hierarchy in the social class and people seem to have a one-track mind. Every home seems to have the same show of affluence, the same participation in socialization and alcohol consumption, and the same masked pretense of closeness. At first he is treated as royalty because he is rich and successful, but slowly we see that the treatment meted out to him is cold and harsh. People who were once friends and lovers have now left his side. Even he has judged people based on wealth, and the very same people now look down upon him. The fact that everyone is boundlessly consuming alcohol seems in a sense an attempt by them all to conceal the facade that they live each day.Ned seems to live in a world of denial and his need to avoid painful memories, details, and occurrences is reflected in his confused state when he hears certain facts. In his mind he has repressed the truth in order to avoid dealing with the consequences, but they eventually catch up with him in a heart-breaking manner. He is pained by the truth and is hopeless because he doesn't realize up until now that his actions have cost him everything that he loved and that it is too late to do anything about it.

Symbolisms

The central symbolism in the short story is the water and the pools themselves. They are reflective of the changes faced by Ned. At first the pool is shimmering and a pale green shade, which is a symbol of youth and experience. He seems to reflect that because he is active and energetic for his age, and always up for adventures. The following pool is just as inviting with its sapphire hue. But as his journey moves along, things take a dark turn. The pools turn murky, and so do his experiences. He is then faced by the opaque gold pool where he faces the first truth, and the cold pool of Biswanger where he faces his second blow. Ned uses the water as a barrier between himself and the world, and the colors represent the changes in his life. The dry pool he faces is a symbol of the mid-life crisis that he is facing, and being in water is his means of avoiding the truth.

Just like the pool, the changing weather and the 'untimely' constellations in the sky reflect the changing reality that Ned has to face. It goes through four seasons, giving us the image of a complete process, and symbolizing the cycle of life. The storm in the story represents the problems that he has faced and forgotten, and the crashing of his mistakes down on his made-up reality. The cumulus clouds can be seen as a symbol for his clouded memory.

The nudity that he partakes in at the Halloran house can be a reflection of the vulnerability that he feels to face the truth.

Motifs

The alcohol can be seen as an escape from reality and an attempt to mask the harsh facts. It could have also be used to explain the changing mental state of Merrill. He seems disoriented, mentally impaired, has heightened energy, is confused, fatigued and shaky. These are all signs of being under the influence and may have been the cause of his loss of memory and confused memory of events.

Born on May 27, 1912, John Cheever was an American short story writer. Because of his subject matter, which largely focused on suburban life, and the skill with which he executed it, he was known as the 'Chekhov of the suburbs'. His themes included the duality found in human nature, and the conflict between the characters' social persona and real nature, and his opposing characters represented the light and dark side of nature.His compilation of short stories, named 'The Stories of John Cheever' won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1979, along with a National Book Critics Circle Award. The paperback edition won the National Book Award in 1981. He was also awarded the National Medal for Literature by the American Academy of Arts and Letters on April 27, 1982, and his work has been included in the Library of America. He died of cancer on June 18, 1982.

Prior to this evening, I had never read anything by John Cheever, so I was quite unprepared to encounter a story with such a wealth of wit, imagination and insight. “The Swimmer” is impossibly dense, and I’m sure a blog post won’t do it justice. It is, by turns, hilarious and heartbreaking, casting an astute satire on suburban ennui while wisely dissecting human nature in broad strokes of the scalpel. The protagonist, Neddy Merrill, begins the story by undertaking a mission to “swim” across his suburban neighborhood, which in his limited scope of perspective means ambling from one gaudy house to the next, eking a drink out of his neighbors’ bars, swimming the length of their respective pools, and moving on. Even from the beginning of the story, I think Cheever’s aim is to examine the pratfalls of self-delusion or willful ignorance. We meet a character whose worldview is completely contained within the artifice of cocktail parties and the ensuing small talk that as far as he’s concerned, an “adventure” is merely a leisurely tour through the places he’s already been and the people he’s already met, all of which resemble one another uncannily. He considers his bizarre, meandering path a “stream” and names it after his wife, but it neither flows like a body of water nor resembles the processes of love. Cheever’s clever wordplay deliberately underplays the fact that a story billed as an epic journey is really just an account of a man getting drunk and systematically bothering his neighbors. Neddy gives himself an arbitrary goal, full of repetitive episodes, and follows it brainlessly, drunkenly, hopelessly. And in the process, his life simply moves on without him. I’ve only just read it for the first time, but “The Swimmer” strikes me as a close look at self-deception and cognitive dissonance. It’s about the ways we shield ourselves from painful memories and self-examination, about that moment we’re all doomed to reach when we look back on the events that most boldly marked our decades on this earth and feel as though we never saw them happen. Cheever deserves high marks for finding humor in this topic, and for presenting it in an entirely original manner. Some questions:

Before I continue, I want to make an important differentiation between Remake and Remaster. What we got with Final Fantasy VII and Resident Evil 3 in April were remakes. A complete reimagining of the games from the ground up, featuring a wealth of extra content, using a brand new engine.

Saints Row The Third is a remaster, essentially leaving the content intact but redefining the textures, audio, and generally cleaning everything up so that it looks, runs, and plays much more smoothly on current systems.

Here comes the curveball – Saints Row The Third Remastered has been so well put together that it genuinely feels like it’s starting to blur the line between the two definitions.

PS4, Xbox One, and PC owners have, without doubt, now got the absolute best version of this game with all of its DLC. As for Switch owners, they’ll probably feel a little bit miffed considering the recent re-release last year now feels heavily outdated.

Sperasoft Studio and Volition haven’t just touched the game up and given it a new lick of paint, this is an enormous upgrade from the PS3 / Xbox 360 version. In fact, it’s hard to see how the game can be improved upon any more in its current form, with every expectation exceeded.

So, yeah, it’s the definitive edition of Saints Row The Third in every sense of the word. And I guess it’s better to ask what hasn’t been changed. Most of the VFX reworked, there’s new realistic animated sequences, all the weapons remade from scratch.

Even all the main model characters have been recreated and pedestrians have received PBR shades and adjustments.

And it seems to be an incredible amount of effort for a franchise that hasn’t always been taken seriously. Yet it shows the incredible faith Volition and Deep Silver have in this IP as we edge closer to Saints Row 5 and this remaster is a real show of respect for the best selling instalment in the franchise.

Honestly, SR3 looks incredible. So good, in fact, that it’s comparable to similarly themed games that released this generation, and is even better in some cases.

Lighting has been changed based on time of day with a full reworking of the sky. The foliage assets have been redone, and all structures have had external renovations.

Best of all, the game runs smooth as butter, even on a base unit. Just take a look at our video footage from the game’s opening mission to see just how impressive it really is.

For a really in-depth analysis of how much has been changed from the original, I’d highly recommend Digital Foundry’s coverage as it really deep dives into the painstaking detail and incredible effort that’s gone into this.

Basically, you’d be hard-pressed to tell this was a last-gen game. In fact, it seems perfectly positioned to run like a dream on the next generation and still look like it belongs there.

Without remaking the engine and redoing the entire game from scratch – even though that’s pretty close to what’s been done here – that’s honestly a miraculous and astonishing feat. And to top it off, they’ve even made it better, addressing the game’s previous issues with frame rate.

So, yeah, I get this isn’t the newest game on the block and the appetite is ravenous for an all-new Saints Row. Honestly, with everything happening in the world, there’s probably going to be an even longer wait for that than before. Sorry.

Fortunately, there’s never been a better time to dive into Saints Row The Third, which can still draw a smile and runs like an absolute dream. It’s as close to a remake as the game will surely get, utilising the best modern technology of the day, coupling it with rock solid performance. You honestly couldn’t ask for more.

Seriously, let’s just get Sperasoft remastering everything from now on. Mass Effect, next?

Saints Row: The Third was the last SR title that I truly got to play for a long time.

And it still brings back some fantastic memories of the good old days that I spent in my old room playing on my PS3. I never got to try it out on PC until now, and I must say that I’m pleasantly surprised with most mods and not surprised at all with others. Like the nudity mods that one always has to expect for these games.

In any case, there are some fantastic mods for SR3 that are sure to improve the in-game experience by a bunch.

If you’re keen to play SR: The Third once more, or if you’ve never tried it out and you’re looking to have some fun, this list of mods is going to help you kick things off big.

Most of these mods directly affect gameplay too. I know many people look for mods exactly because of large additions so there’s a decent variety here.

Let’s put it this way: I think there’s a little something here for everyone.

12. Black0ut’s Better Bras (NSFW)

Yep, you guessed what this mod is all about.

It basically changes the way women’s bras look in the game. There’s nothing else to add.

If you’re into stuff like this in your game, check out this mod.

11. SR3 Nude Mod (NSFW)

Much like the previous mod, this one also modifies women’s looks in the game.

I’m assuming you can already guess what it does by simply reading the title, so I won’t go into details with this one either.

10. Shitface’s Weapon Rebalance Mod

Our dear friend known by the eloquent name of Shitface has produced one of the best mods in the SR3 community.

This one does a complete rebalance of the weapons system in the game, changing things that range from basic modifications to others that go as far as changing the traces of certain types of ammunition in the game.

In any case, this is a great mod to install regardless of where you are in the game.

If you’ve been playing for a while the changes will be more noticeable. If you haven’t, you’ll get used to the changes quickly.

Especially considering all the fun weapons we have in SR: The Third.

9. NPC Behavior and Spawn Mod

Another mod brought to us by the SR legend known as Shitface, this one does a fantastic job at overhauling the way the AI works and spawns.

It makes spawns way more natural and tweaks the way the AI interacts with the player as well as with the game environment.

Notoriety has been heavily modified and improved to make it work even better than it does in the vanilla game.

The cops are much more fun to run from after you’ve installed this mod. Thanks, Shitface.

8. Things To Do in Steelport

So this is more of a mod pack than a mod per se. But I think it’s important to check it out anyway.

It comes with a family-friendly version as well, which is hilarious to read something like that in a title as violent as Saints Row.

But that just means that there are no nudity mods included.

In any case, this one adds the best mods from this list (plus a couple of other useful ones) that’ll help you get the best out of your time in Steelport.

7. Rare Vehicle Cheats

As simple as this sounds, I like this mod because it gave me access to plenty of rides that were difficult to come by before.

It basically adds new cheats that will allow you to spawn rare vehicles in the game.

And this goes beyond all the really fun cars you can already get in vanilla.

Killbane’s Jet, for example, can be spawned with this mod installed. It lets you access a plenty of unique rides and have a lot more fun.

6. New Customization

So this mod brings us a ton of customization options to the table, allowing you to make many more changes to your homies and the way your character looks.

The only downside of it is that the description is in Polish (I think?).

But worry not – since I downloaded it, I can tell you that you can expect lots of good out of it!

5. Unofficial Patch v1

This is one of the many community patches that modders have taken the time to create.

And I have to say, they are very good additions to the game world.

The Unofficial Patch 1 has the main objective of making the game environment feel more realistic, which some might say is a bit of a bummer, but it does grant you a different SR: The Third experience.

I would only recommend this mod to readers that have completed the game already, though.

4. SR4 Hairstyles for SR3

A basic mod, but it adds a ton of new customization options to the game. So it gets a good spot on my list for sure.

It simply transfers the hair assets from SR4 to SR3, which gives you the option to put any hairstyle from the newest game into one of your characters in The Third.

It’s a fantastic mod, although quite a simple one. Still worth checking out.

3. Saints Row: The Third Overhaul

This one is an even better modification of the game than the last mod pack on my list, as it only adds some minor changes that improve certain key aspects of Saints Row.

Game improvements are a crucial part of this Overhaul.

But it also comes with a ton of graphic improvements that will enhance the way the game looks by a ton.

All in all, although it’s just a compilation, this mod makes the game look far better than in the vanilla version. And the changes make gameplay even more fun.

2. Sandbox Mod

If you’ve finished the game already then don’t waste any more time time and download this mod now.

Sandbox mode will give you hours of fun that you can’t even imagine till you check it out.

It lets you tweak almost every single aspect of the game.

Imagine having control of when you want your character to get drunk or dizzy; upgrading weapons in an instant; controlling how much cash you really have without needing to input any codes.

The proper interpretation - from Genesis

A simple way to determine if the days are 12 hours, 24 hours or an indefinite period of time is to examine each of the days and see what the Bible says about the time it took for those days to happen. We will examine each day and see if Genesis indicates which interpretation is correct. In this page, we will consider the text of Genesis only and not rely upon any scientific information, about which we can not be absolutely sure of its accuracy.

12-hour days?

Let's look at the first definition of yom - the 12-hour period (from sunrise to sunset). A very casual glance at the text shows that yom could not be referring to daylight only. On the first day, Genesis 1:5 states that there was both daylight and night.2 We can eliminate the 'daylight' definition of yom as being consistent with the Genesis text. The days of Genesis must have been longer than 12 hours.

24-hours days - Day 1

Next, let's examine the Genesis days to see if they fit the 24-hour interpretation. Many things happen n the first day. God created the entire universe, including the earth. God also began the period of daylight and night on the earth. Although science tells us that these events took much more than 24 hours, there is nothing in the biblical text that would clearly indicate that the day could not be 24 hours long.3 The 24-hour interpretation passes the test for the first day.

24-hours days - Day 2

On the second day, God separated the waters above the earth from those on the surface of the earth.4 Since there is no timetable listed for this period of time, it could be 24 hours in length. The 24-hour interpretation passes the test for the second day.

24-hours days - Day 3

On the third day, God formed the land out of the seas. There is no time frame given for the formation of the land and seas. Some time after the land was formed, God created the plants:

Then God said, 'Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit after their kind, with seed in them, on the earth'; and it was so. (Genesis 1:11) And the earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed after their kind, and trees bearing fruit, with seed in them, after their kind; and God saw that it was good. (Genesis 1:12)

The text clearly states that the earth 'sprouted' the plants (the Hebrew word deshe,5 Strong's #H1877, usually refers to grasses). The Hebrew word dasha,6 (Strong's #H1876) indicates that the plants grew from either seeds or small seedlings in order to have 'sprouted.' In addition, these plants produced seeds. The Hebrew word here is zera (Strong's #H2233), which is most often translated 'descendants.' This makes matters very difficult for the 24-hour interpretation. Not only do the plants sprout and grow to maturity, but produce seed or descendants. There are no plants capable of doing this within a 24-hour period of time. Things actually get worse for this interpretation. Genesis 1:12 clearly states that God allowed the earth to bring forth trees that bore fruit. The process by which the earth brings forth trees to the point of bearing fruit takes several years, at minimum. God did not create the trees already bearing fruit. The text states clearly that He allowed the earth to accomplish the process of fruit bearing through natural means. Because the process of the third day requires a minimum period of time of more than 24 hours, the Genesis text for the third day clearly falsifies the interpretation that the days of Genesis one are 24-hour periods of time.

24-hours days - Day 6

Day 6 is also a problem for the 24-hour interpretation. During this day, God planted a garden in Eden, and caused the garden to sprout and grow. Then God brought all the birds, cattle and wild animals to Adam to name. God put Adam to sleep, took a part of him and formed Eve (Genesis 2:21-22). Adam's response to Eve's creation was 'at last,' indicating that he thought the day was very long indeed. More information...

Conclusion

We are left with only one interpretation for the days of Genesis one. The literal, clearly indicated, meaning of yom for Genesis one must be an unspecified, long period of time. This is why I believe that the day-age Genesis one interpretation is the only biblically sound interpretation for the creation of the world and life on it.
