This final chapter of Moore’s work on Miracleman now stands out to me as yet another piece of evidence against that current strain of comics fans who spout nonsense about ‘social justice issues’ spoiling modern day comics, and how comics were never political.
Obviously, going back to Superman punching out corrupt landlords, and just about everyone punching Nazis, in the first days of comics, this claim has no basis on fact. But lets assume they haven’t read anything that far back (I’m not sure they’ve read much of anything, but…). It seems to me that a lot of those people seem to like Watchmen, suggesting that while maybe it is unfair to refer to the 30s and 40s (or the 50s, 60s or 70s), the Modern Age must be some sort of reference point. I suspect that the Watchmen thing may be down to an apparently almost complete overlap with the section of fandom that has an obsession with the ‘Snyder cut’ of Justice League, since Snyder was responsible for the Watchmen film and perhaps they have never read the comic but have just equated this whole thing into one weird idea of comics based on some movies. Which would be a preferable reason than the fact that people exist that could read the series, with its Cold War politics, commentary on US foreign policy, corrupt millionaire with plans for global domination and protagonists with clearly questionable moral stances on just about everything, and come away and think it was just a fun superhero romp with no interest in ‘issues’.
But fine, let’s pretend that is possible for some readers (Doomsday Clock certainly suggests it’s possible for people to take Watchmen at face value and miss almost the entire point). Now, let’s give them this issue of Miracleman. Let’s see what they make of this one page, where Miracleman effectively imposes some alien superhero version of socialism (something else these guys seem to really hate without actually being able to articulate what it is) on the entire world. I just want to know how they cope with this…..
From Miracleman 16, by “The Original Writer” (Alan Moore), John Totleben, Thomas Yeates, Steve Oliff & Joe Caramagna
