BG3 Severance AU

Tbh my main thoughts are about my horrible little Durge and their horrible little family. Because ohh my god Helly in The We We Are is just straight up resist!durge in Act 3. Forgive me for the harm I have caused this world...

And I've thought a lot about how badly Kallian would cope with the idea of a future version of themself who's doing good and also free of the Bhaal cult (this freak sees no issues with the idea of torturing their future self into stopping that). Having both versions of them happening concurrently and determined to cause problems for each other??? Ohhh my god this is the greatest AU in the world.

But my thoughts about characters who aren't my horrible little OC in the Severance AU:

Outie!Wyll gets some of Outie!Irving's plot. Suspicious about Lumon and severing himself to investigate, possibly with the paintings. I feel like his family have ties to Lumon and the Eagans. Ulder doesn't like them either, but he has to be polite and diplomatic and find legal ways to oppose Severance. Wyll is of the opinion that, fuck that, we need to be doing something now. He both idealises his Innie as (presumably) the Hero able to fight corruption because he's not tied to the Ravengard name, and feels desperately guilty that he exists.

Astarion is still being abused by Cazador, but Cazador very kindly Allows him to leave for eight hours a day, to go work on the severed floor. He holds the fact that Astarion gets so much time of "total freedom" over him. Outie!Astarion is desperately jealous of Innie!Astarion and fucking despises him for having it so much easier and still wanting to leave. Innie!Astarion is desperately jealous of Outie!Astarion and fucking despises him for having it so much easier and still coming back to work.

Shadowheart gets bits of Gemma's plot—she's absolutely multi-severed and subject to Lumon Experiments. Like, I don't even need to change things up here. Her parents are held prisoner on the Testing Floor, they're unsevered and recognise her while she doesn't know them. I feel like the experiments are designed to try and mould the Perfect Lumon worker. Any time Shadowheart fucks up or expresses doubt, welp, let's just split her brain a little bit more and start again!

Lae'zel is not severed. Lae'zel was a Wintertide Fellowship star pupil growing up and is now a severed floor enforcer who is desperately loyal to Lumon, and desperately trying to ignore the fact that she means Nothing to this company. It's fine, she Deserves to get punished for anything that goes wrong on the severed floor!! If she was Perfect that wouldn't have happened! She's very pissed off to discover what's going on with Shadowheart, because Lae'zel doesn't get given do-overs if she messes up. Only for that reason and not because what Lumon are doing to her is horrible. Yeah. Definitely not that.

Gale I haven't thought much about, I feel like he gets a severed job after a bad breakup, so he can make a version of himself that isn't a fuckup, and he can reap the benefits of social interaction without actually having to talk to anyone.

Karlach I'm struggling with because her brand of Being Experimented On doesn't really fit in with Severing or anything we've seen so far at Lumon? And I think her Outie's response to getting a resignation request really would be to just leave. Hoping Season 3 give us more information about the houses apparently on the severed floor and the people who don't get to leave, and that I can do something with Karlach there. And I do like the idea of Innie!Karlach being good friends with Innie!Gortash, while outside he betrayed her and ruined her life.

Gortash btw is someone who knows Lumon and the severed floor are Fucked, and severs himself to make the representation of all that is weak within him suffer. Ketheric is not severed, and looks down on anyone who does that. (Only cowards let themselves forget their grief at losing loved ones for eight hours a day, normal people let it consume their every thought and action instead.) Orin's plot is sadly very tied up with Kallian and the Eagan family cult so we're not going to go into it here, but Lumon and the Eagans do not fucking deserve her.

Anyway please let me know if you or anyone else have further thoughts because godddd Severed AUs are so fucking fun and I'm sure I am not the first person to go into this!! And there's got to be at least one Helly-as-Durge playthrough out there.

One of the funniest things about Ketheric Thorm as a character is that they made a villain who has all the cliché signs of being the "redeemable" one (dead wife, nice daughter who cares about him, outwardly sane compared to his coworkers, has a dog), so you go through all these dialogue checks and persuasion rolls believing that you can turn this one good, but every time you hit him the "please, this isn't who your wife wants you to be; you can do better, " something happens to grandpa that makes him double down on being bad, transforming into a more progressively evil version of himself every time. It's like the DM is actively trolling the players. Oh, you believe some rando can reset this centuries-old man's moral compass with just a few reminders about his dead wife??? You naive, ignorant, trope-poisoned fool, I'm making him worse!

God I love Helena and Helly so much... My beloved repressed traumatised woman and the rabid unyielding another version of herself that was there all along deep inside her, the version of her that's able to fight for them both, who's the catalyst of the rebellious movement in the hell they're both trapped in, one who wouldn't be able to be like this if Helena wasn't an abuse victim.
