Translating Thedas: A List of Thedas Languages From Veilguard and Links to Decoding

This has been a long time in the works and I'm so glad to finally have this posted. Some talented people on discord and Bluesky have been doing some HARD work and decoding the languages in both Veilguard and the series in general. While I've working on cleaning up the scripts where I could, a lot of credit for this work belongs to:

Some of these alphabets are incomplete! But they may be updated in the future. To which I will make sure to do so then! There will be additional posts sharing all of the things that have been translated.

With all that said! Here are the alphabets!

Ancient Elven/Elven

A note about this that Caitie mentions, while the alphabet works for datv and there is some cross correlation with dai elven script, it seems that dai has some extra rules. It is unclear if the dai script is still canon. Eitherway Caitie and the others have made a font! Link below.

Complete Elven Alphabet from datv, with notes on the difference from dai elven script, where it used a character to indicate when a letter was doubled underneath. datv elven does not share this trait.

Ancient Tevene/Tevene

The script for ancient tevene and modern tevene are the same as far as we can tell. I am uncertain if like elven and dwarven if its changed from dai.

Tomb-script

An important fact about tomb-script is that it was introduced by Emmrich's writer Sylvia Fekekuty, and is specific to the Mourn Watch, it is not the script for Nevarra in its entirety. As of right now in the series we have not seen Nevarran script to her knowledge, nor have we found script we could deem to be Nevarran.

Conclusion

All text in the game is translatable, unfortunately for us, some of it is just Lorem ipsum or just fake latin. It is thanks to all these talented people that we've discovered it and fleshed it out. A big thanks to them and for them sharing their work with me so I can bang on about it. I will be providing translated works in separate posts organized by language. There is a lot and I'll easily hit the image and text limit.

As things develop, whether in updated/completed alphabets or releases of fonts, I'll keep this post updated. If I missed anything, you come across updates, or have questions, please feel free to drop an ask!

Zea Aldwir

Usually whenever I make OC’s they have straight hair. So with Zea, I wanted to do something different and give her curls. Zea has some really tight coils in game. Much tighter than I imagined at first. But in game you can either choose a bit of a wave or really tight coils.

Caelum Ingellvar

They are a really old OC I decided to resurrect. Their predecessor had long straight purple hair, like they have now, but with teal tips. Unfortunately that’s not something available.

Can't let go of the idea that Rook had consistently shitty sex before meeting Emmrich.

In all of the canon backgrounds every possible previous lover is way too emotionally fucked up and/or drunk and/or skeezy to do the job right.

In any universe the best they've been able to do is someone who: (1) knows all the important erogenous zones, (2) has a sense of pacing, and (3) smells good or okay. Pick two.

Enter Professor Emmrich "finer details of anatomy" Volkarin. Emmrich "I always choose my words carefully" the Necromancer. Wears a dozen rings on each hand not for grave gold but because if he doesn't weigh them down they'll flutter delicately away and unpick the Veil itself one gossamer strand at a time. Emmrich "Slow. Deep." Volkarin of the Mourn Watch. Knows more about the human (/elf/dwarf/Qunari) body than the entire Anatomy Studies catalog of fantasy Elsevier.

Imagine coming out of the Grey Wardens or the Veil Jumpers, where everyone smells like some very upsetting science experiments and their idea of a good lay is two or three minutes against the most handy tree, maybe without checking to see how private it is first; or the Crows, where sex is just another competition; or the Lords, where rum. Imagine MW!Rook, who's first sexual experience was in an actual crypt and not one of the charming, well lit ones with polite spiders who know how to spot the best and most aesthetically goth real estate.

In the flirting stage Rook has Emmrich consistently on the back foot because they keep saying the most unhinged but somehow non-vulgar things at the most bizarre moments, but once things get going I'm convinced Rook spends three weeks useless and in a daze not (entirely) because of afterglow, but because they are legitimately disturbed by the number of new nerve endings he manages to discover every time he touches them.

What I love most about Emmrich is the very heart of him: his softness.

He is tender in a world that tells men to be anything but. A gentle soul, kind and thoughtful, with a mind as rich as his heart is open. He honors the living, and he reveres the dead. He is sweet without irony, sentimental without shame. A romantic in the truest, quietest sense. He loves fully, without condition or calculation.

Emmrich wears his heart not just on his sleeve, but in everything he does.

He is an orphan who built a family from the idea of home and a pile of bones, who chose love and warmth when the world gave him none. He is what we’ve been starved of in stories for too long: a male character allowed to be openly affectionate, unguarded, kind. A soft man cast as a love interest, not despite his gentleness, but because of it.

He’s not brooding in a corner, growling threats, or pinning someone to a wall with a smirk and a “kitten.”

He’s knitting a scarf to keep Rook’s neck warm in winter. He’s making tea. He’s listening.

Once more, and this matters: he is soft. He pines, he longs, he yearns, he picks flowers.

And we need more men like him in fiction, because we need more kindness in the world.

Walking the Graves

Chapter 17 is up!

Manfred already had found a red clay vase with some dried out flowers, which they put on the graves during their last visit. He turns it upside down to get the withered blooms out. He carries the vase towards a faucet not far from the graves, filling it up with water. He picks up the new bouquet, which he had laid on the grave of his grandfather for safekeeping, and carefully places it into the vase.

“Elannora and Rupert Volkarin.” Zea reads from the headstones. “They walk eternity hand in hand.”

“Sometimes I come here to talk to them.” Emmrich smiles, pulling Zea flush against him. “And I’d like to think they listen.”

Another peaceful silence falls between the two of them, their eyes on the headstones. Manfred darts off again, plucking small daisy flowers from the field to lay them on the graves.

“Well, don’t be shy.” Emmrich encourages Zea. “Introduce yourself.”

Zea looks up at Emmrich in surprise, before turning to the graves. “Oh. Zea Aldwir. It’s nice to meet you both.” She nervously fiddles with the golden bracelet around her wrist.

Emmrich lifts the hand off Manfred’s hand to cradle her jaw, his thumb caressing her cheek. “You needn’t worry.” He presses a subtle kiss on her tear stained lips. “There is nothing wrong with being grieved. I do hope you know you’re not alone, Zea. I’ve got you. And so does Manfred.”

Taash: Elves are spirits. You like spirits. Is that why you’re into Rook?

Emmrich: The ancient elves were originally spirits. Modern day elves are not.

Taash: ‘Kay. That doesn’t answer the question.

Emmrich: Rook is not a spirit therefore the question is moot.

Rook: Okay but I don’t know who my birth parents are so we don’t know that I’m not a spirit.

Emmrich: Darling please.
