Hey letâs do a little writing experiment. Itâs about getting descriptions right on things you donât have at hand/have never seen by finding comparable stand-ins. Youâre gonna need your imagination for this one.
Put your hands around your neck so the tips of your thumbs touch and then see how close the rest of your fingers get to each other. Like actually, put your phone down and do it. This has nothing to do with your body, I just need to to roughly understand the circumference of a human neck in your hands.
Did you do it? Ok
Now, even with my (ridiculously) small hands the rest of my fingers easily interlock on the back of my neck. Almost everyone else I asked to try this irl had the same experience. A few people on the heavier side couldnât interlock their fingers but they were still touching or fairly close. A human neck is not small, but I fairly easily fits in your hands for most people.
Now take your hands and form the circle you just formed with them around your neck and look at it. Try to get the size right and imagine holding a human neck. Imagine the personâs warmth and the pulse you can feel through the aortas just under their skin. Imagine the thickness and weight of it.
She couldnât fit both hands around it.

I have such a deep love for Severusâ stupid jar collection of fuck knows what. Like does he need those? Are they for potions? Is it his collection? His special interest? Does he organise them so the creepiest ones are most visible for the students? Amazing. No one does it like him.

Sneta week!
We're bringing meta back! Snape meta, aka sneta. We've decided it's time to take a break from the antis and do what the Snapedom does best: write and discuss meta! For a week from August 24th - September 1st, we'll be posting a theme a day. Anyone who would like to participate can use the theme as a jumping off point. Posts tagged with #snetafest will get shared on this account (as long as they follow the requested guidelines below).
You can use the hashtag any time, not just the day of a given theme, and we'll do our best to reblog it, just please keep in mind this is a fun thing we're doing in our spare time so please be patient with us.
The themes will be:
Day 1, August 24: "Cokeworth." Cokeworth as symbolism, character descriptor, or both.
Day 2, August 25: "Neurodivergence." Neurodiverse coding as a way to read a character.
Day 3, August 26: "Relationships/dynamics/parallels." Snape and a significant relationship with another character shaping his narrative.
Day 4, August 27: "Otherhood." The role of otherhood in informing Snape's identity and/or character arc.
Day 5, August 28: "Redemption/trauma." Redemption and/or trauma as themes.
Day 6, August 29: "Guardianship." The role of guardianship in shaping Snape.
Day 7 August 30: "Films (book vs film)." Representation in text vs. screen and why either is compelling or not.
Bonus! Day 8 September 1: "Free day." Whatever Severus Snape topic you want to discuss!
We're using the definition of "meta" from Fanlore:
In fandom,  meta (also meta essay) is used to describe a fan-authored piece of non-fiction writing discussing any aspect of fandom, fanworks, or the source text. This can include discussing characters and their motivations, fanfiction tropes and trends, fan activity, particular plot elements, choices by canon creators, alternate possibilities for canon and much more. Meta can be fandom-specific, or it can be pan-fandom, commenting on fannish trends and tendencies that span fandoms and fan generations.
Guidelines: Feel free to focus on a specific scene, book, or the whole series, up to you! If you can link to other posts you reference or cite where in the text quotes and references can be found then please do, then others can get context for your post and maybe even be inspired! We ask that posts be focused on meta/text analysis. Headcanons are always welcome, but we ask that they be noted clearly and not be the focal point of posts submitted to Snetafest. Thank you!
Resources:
Potter-Search - a free online search engine specific to the 7 books in the Harry Potter series.
Harry Potter fan wiki - what it says on the label. Contains info on characters, events, objects etc. that draws on canon text, films, interviews, and Pottermore content.
(Feel free to use Pottermore as a source if you choose to, we've decided not to link to it as site traffic profits JK Rowling and we prefer not to add to her bigotry fund.)
Basic rules: Please no genAI content and treat each other with mutual courtesy and respect in reblogs/comments (we're asking politely but we mean it, genAI content and abuse will not be tolerated).
Feel free to send us questions and we'll update this pinned post with an FAQ section answering them!
Most importantly, have fun! Be curious! Wax poetic! And don't forget to tag your posts #snetafest so we can find them!

The first chapter of the sequel to my Snape in Lingerie fic, Perfect Poison Pearl, is out now on Ao3!
Severus Snape/MaleOC | Rating: Explicit
Summary:
Severus blinked at his fingernails, realizing that when heâd made this promise to Dumbledore, he didnât think heâd live very long, not even to middle-age. At the time, he hadnât even wanted to live to his next birthday, but nowâŚat the far end of the hall, through his tented fingers, Severus watched Kasimir stroll into the Great Hall, wand between his teeth, tying his long hair up in a messy bun as he walkedâand Severus realized he no longer wanted to die young. When had that happened? And what did that mean for him? For him and for Kasimir? For Albus? And for Harry Potter, the Boy Who Lived?

Chapter 10: Into the Aurora
A Colder Kind of Carnage by Theodorka
Severus Snape x Reader | Rating: Explicit | 5.6k words
Severus is a 26 year-old Hogwarts Potions Master looking for a rare ingredient at the end of the world. Featuring a hermit herbologist reader in her mid-20s living in Antarctica.
1986 / Post-First Wizarding War.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt:
You consider that perhaps Severus has a point. Perhaps, you are taking comfort in the feeling of certainty, even if it is a certainty of imminent doom. That this is just a feeling that helps you copeânot an accurate and prescient premonition. Perhaps, Severus has a point.
And perhaps you are in the early stages of exposure.
You consider it nevertheless. You and Severus bravely trudge across the ice, leaving the horde of emperor penguins behind, and you are still considering the possibility of less certain doom when the certain doom arrives.
The ice cracks beneath your feet.
âWhat wasââ Severus beginsâyou answer with a scream, the ice splitting open underneath you and you promptly go tumbling ass over tea kettle into the newly formed crevasse. You slide up against the wall and itâs a bit like going down a giant, icy playground slide, except itâs dark and freezing and you know exactly what awaits you at the end.
Doom.
If ANY of yall EVER do this shit to me, im deleting every single fic out of spite.
If I ever catch one of yall doing this to another author and I know youre a follower of my work I will block you personally on every platform
None of yall are the fic police. I DESPISE genai. I think its an insult to art, humanity, and the planet itself. But aint not a single fucking person here qualified to pick apart a strangers fic looking for a gotcha moment to make yourselves feel superior. If you think something is ai you can ask the author (most are proud of the ai use and will just tell you straight up) if they say yes you have your answer and can warn people. If they say no and you dont believe them you block and quietly keep it between you and maybe a close group of friends. Spreading misinformation is DANGEROUS. And NONE of you doing this shit are anywhere near qualified to do it.
THIS GOES DOUBLY FOR ARTISTS.
âCertainly not. You must kill me.â
There was a long silence, broken only by an odd clicking noise. Fawkes the phoenix was gnawing a bit of cuttlebone.
âWould you like me to do it now?â asked Snape, his voice heavy with irony. âOr would you like a few moments to compose an epitaph?â
If this is not the cuntiest fucking answer to being ordered to commit murder, then I don't know what is. Severus Snape, the icon you are.
i don't know if it's been asked before so forgive me but how poor do you think the weasleys are? are they more lower middle class? cause ron didn't get his broken wand replaced immediately in the second year but got a new broomstick in the fifth?
and on a related note do you think arthur weasley is selfish for not going for a higher paying job? " i assume it would depend on how well of they are and if the family's needs are met?"
looove all your posts btw keep up the good work.
First of all, thank you! đ
The Weasleys and money are interesting for sure.
See, they have enough money to always have food and clothes (second-hand, but all kids are dressed, fed, and well cared for). They have a house with 6 bedrooms:
Master bedroom
Fred & George's room
Ginny's room
Ron's room
Bill's room (which Charlie uses too when he comes over)
Percy's room
And a very large yard:
The garden was large, and in Harryâs eyes, exactly what a garden should be. The Dursleys wouldnât have liked it â there were plenty of weeds, and the grass needed cutting â but there were gnarled trees all around the walls, plants Harry had never seen spilling from every flower bed, and a big green pond full of frogs.
(CoS, Ch3)
The Weasleys read like a family that used to have money. They have land, they have many cousins and aunts and uncles who seem to be living well. The parents don't act like they grew up lacking in anything. And even now that the money has dried up, they still don't live badly. They seem to be poor, not because Arthur's job doesn't pay enough, but because both Arthur and Molly have no idea how to budget or handle money. They both act like people who grew up with plenty of money they can throw around, and therefore, don't know how to save it.
The fact that they don't have money to replace Ron's wand is proof that they don't know how to handle money. The smart thing to do when you struggle economically is save up surplus money you don't immediately need when you have it, so you'll have emergency funds. You will put some money aside for future hard times, but the Weasleys don't do that:
I couldnât believe it when Dad won the Daily Prophet Draw. Seven hundred galleons! Most of itâs gone on this trip, but theyâre going to buy me a new wand for next year.
(PoA, Ch1)
They win 700 galleons, spend 7 of them on a new wand for Ron and "most of it" on a long family trip to Egypt. Sure, I can understand wanting to visit Bill, but if they're strapped for cash, I'd expect they won't go all out on the trip, go for slightly cheaper lodging, or stay there for fewer days, maybe go to fewer restaurants â there are ways to go on a budget vacation. This economic decision makes no sense.
But what this shows us is that the Weasleys live paycheck to paycheck, not because Arthur isn't paid enough â they don't know how to save money.
Bill & Charlie don't live at home, and since CoS, all their other kids are at Hogwarts all year. The amount of money Arthur & Molly would need to pay for food during the year is much lower compared to when all their kids are there. So, I assume, they would have leftover money since they aren't feeding as many heads. Even since Bill & Charlie left home, they should have had more money to put aside, even just a few sickles a month, that, over time, can become a magnificent amount of money â and yet, they don't. Their vault is near empty when we see it.
They have land they can farm and sell products from (they have an orchard, they own):
âCome and have a game of Quidditch in the orchard, Harry,â said Ron. âCome on â three on three, Bill and Charlie and Fred and George will play. . . . You can try out the Wronski Feint. . . .â
(GoF, Ch10)
He spent most of his days playing two-a-side Quidditch in the Weasleysâ orchard
(HBP, Ch6)
They can rent out parts of their yard, and Arthur gets plenty of other perks from his job besides his salary (bribery):
âI like Ludo,â said Mr. Weasley mildly. âHe was the one who got us such good tickets for the Cup. I did him a bit of a favor: His brother, Otto, got into a spot of trouble â a lawnmower with un- natural powers â I smoothed the whole thing over.â
(GoF, Ch5)
And seems to be well-connected within the Ministry. Enough that everyone important knows him by name, and he is in a position to write laws:
âWell, dear, I think youâll find that he would be quite within the law to do that, even if â er â he maybe would have done better to, um, tell his wife the truth. . . . Thereâs a loophole in the law, youâll find. . . . As long as he wasnât intending to fly the car, the fact that the car could fly wouldnâtââ âArthur Weasley, you made sure there was a loophole when you wrote that law!â shouted Mrs. Weasley. âJust so you could carry on tinkering with all that Muggle rubbish in your shed! And for your information, Harry arrived this morning in the car you werenât intending to fly!â
(CoS, Ch3)
Arthur's position in the ministry is clearly more influential than the books lead us to believe. (I have some headcanons about that, but that's maybe for a different post). They have avenues they can earn money from, and would reasonably be able to save at least a little every month, especially after Bill and Charlie left home. We see Fred and George can save up much more than the Weasleys seem to have over a few years without having a stable job like their dad:
âWeâll bet thirty-seven Galleons, fifteen Sickles, three Knuts,â said Fred as he and George quickly pooled all their money [...] âBoys,â said Mr. Weasley under his breath, âI donât want you betting. . . . Thatâs all your savings. . . . Your mother ââ
(GoF, Ch7)
But the Weasleys have an empty bank vault:
Harry enjoyed the breakneck journey down to the Weasleysâ vault, but felt dreadful, far worse than he had in Knockturn Alley, when it was opened. There was a very small pile of silver Sickles inside, and just one gold Galleon.
(CoS, Ch4)
This is a vault of people who don't know how to save money, but more than that, this, to me, looks like a vault of people who are used to operating in debt.
When they go shopping, Molly takes everything out of the vault:
Mrs. Weasley felt right into the corners before sweeping the whole lot into her bag.
(CoS, Ch4)
And it's enough to buy everything 4 kids need for school for a whole year, btw. Sure, the robes are second-hand, but Harry always takes out a bunch of galleons. It's either everything is really cheap, way cheaper than it should be, and Harry carries around way too much money, or the Weasleys just always operate on debt.
As in, the single galleon is not have enough to actually buy everything, and Molly had to basically promise shops she'd pay them back later, basically paying with money she doesn't have. This could explain the Weasleys not having any emergency funds, since they're always running after various debts they owe.
And we know the Wizarding World allows people to make promises over debts, even the goblins:
A gang of them [goblins] cornered him [Bagman] in the woods after the World Cup and took all the gold he had, and it still wasnât enough to cover all his debts. They followed him all the way to Hogwarts to keep an eye on him. Heâs lost everything gambling. Hasnât got two Galleons to rub together. And you know how the idiot tried to pay the goblins back?â âHow?â said Harry. âHe put a bet on you, mate,â said Fred. âPut a big bet on you to win the tournament. Bet against the goblins.â
(GoF, Ch37)
The goblins were willing to take Bagman's word he'd pay them back with his bet on Harry â it's very possible shops allow this too, especially if not everyone is carrying galleons everywhere. Say, even if you have money in your vault, but you only took out enough for X you wanted to buy, the shop could write your name down and what yoy owe for you to come by and pay them later (It makes sense for their society, that is very small and getting away with such a debt is hard and seems to be a very trusting of promises and other's words. The whole betting with Ludo thing was solely based on slips of paper and Bagman's word, so I can see something like this being common for them. After all, Wizarding Britain has the population of a very small town).
I still think they're bad with money, since, if debts are the problem, I'd use some of the 700 galleon prize money to get a headstart on that, but I think the Wealseys are comfortable living with a certain amount of debt. They're used to it.
As for the broom, that might've been on a day they got the salary/didn't have many debts to pay that month. The food at Grimmauld the summer before fifth year might not have been paid for by Arthur, which allowed them to have fewer debts and therefore the money for a broom.
At least, that's my headcanon/theory about it. They are poor not because of Arthurâs job, they could've made it work better â they are just bad at managing the funds and other resources at their disposal + got into a bunch of debts due to this tendency to not manage their funds properly.
a random middle of the night update on the state of my WIPs
I am still working on all three of my projects, I stg I am, but I've had a hectic last several weeks. I don't believe in author curses, but my cat was having eye problems for several weeks and I had to take my husband to the ER for a kidney stone(the worst is past and they're both going to be OK). so things are getting back to normal for me writing-wise.
I think I'm due to reread These Gilded Memories of Mine before I put up the next chapter. I need to take notes and plan ahead as we're getting to the point where my plot notes have a lot of ???? in them (and I can finally fix that Percy being Head Boy in CoS mistake I made like fifteen chapters ago lol).
I've been slowly making progress on A Colder Kind of Carnage. We're talking maybe dozens of words a day on that front. The second person, present tense narration fucks with my brain sometimes and I find I'll write a paragraph that switched tense like ten times and I'm just like, ig ill come back to this when I get in the zone(autozone)(I mean 2nd person present tense zone). I feel genuinely kind of bad because I try to update my works in order so they all get updated in a timely manner, but I skipped this one and now it's been over a month since it last got updated :( I may just post a somewhat shorter chapter (for me, at least) of what I have if I can't get myself together soon, just to get it updated.
I've been making fantastic progress on the sequel to Perfect Poison Pearl! Definitely the current favorite child of all my works lol. I have lots of ideas for pretty outfits for Severus and Kas to wear. I will probably do actual proper chapters for the sequel, rather than a 45k word oneshot, and I'm hoping to have the first one out before a wedding I'm attending soon. Be prepared for a decent amount of angst and romantic fluff and Sev being a shameless catdad lol. And subscribe to the series on Ao3 if you haven't and want to be notified when the fic is posted!
Getting to grow old.
I think a good ending for Severus wouldnât include Hogwarts, I feel like Hogwarts is symbolic of his perpetual adolescence. He was always paying for his childhood mistakes, holding childhood grudges, and being the pawn of childhood role models. He has healed, payed for his mistakes, and completed his arc.
He deserves a seaside holiday. He deserves to grow old.
