Probably most visitors do not miss a day trip to Te Urewera National Park, which is two and a half hours drive from Gisborne. The largest national park on the North Island (also its most extensive wilderness area) is characterised by mountains, forests, rivers, lakes and waterfalls. Meng Foon, the mayor of Gisborne is Chinese, comes from a long-established vegetable growing family and is the only mayor of New Zealand who speaks fluent Te Reo Maori.
