Dear Evan, @evan-rg-jr
I need you to know I had to wrestle that letter from your Papa’s grip so that I could be the one to reply. He’s making dinner tonight which means I have the joy of writing back to you. Rest assured he is grumbling in the kitchen as I sit here, I’ll remind him of how he sulked the next time I try to complain about anything and he teases me. We read the letter together though, we read all of your letters together, no matter how short or trivial they are. And he made numerous comments about the start of our own relationship that I know you would rather die than read so I’ll save you the trauma.
Both of us have been smiling since your Owl arrived, we might actually be unable to stop. You know we support you in anything you do and if this boy makes you happy then we are so, so happy too. Is it too soon to ask to meet him? You have to bring him over for dinner one day. Does he know your Papa will hunt him down and Hex him if he breaks your heart? Forgive me for that one but I did manage to talk him down from a Curse to a Hex so I think I deserve a little credit.
Your Papa and I were lucky enough to attend school together but it might surprise you to know we didn’t talk for the majority of our time in the castle. That has no impact on whether you love someone, if you share a connection with them then nothing can take that away from you. We’re poof of that and I hope we managed to teach you that while you were growing up. Truly, Evan, nothing is impossible and our life together started after we graduated, when we finally had an element of freedom, so don’t feel as though you are missing out.
The difficult thing about trusting somebody is making yourself vulnerable, we’re so very proud of you for doing that, we know how terrifying that can be. A leap of faith is often necessary in times such as these, if you don’t open up then you risk losing something special. If he enjoys Sunflowers then he must be the one, though maybe I am a little biased. I’m not sure if I told you your Papa went on an insane spree in our Sixth Year, having Sunflowers delivered to me in the Great Hall every day for at least two weeks. He’s an idiot, that’s for sure, but hopeless romantics often are. I just read that out to him and he said ‘tell our son not to listen to you and that romance won you over so clearly you’re the idiot.’ We both love the Sunflower idea really, this boy sounds very gentle, the artist in me approves.
It wasn’t love at first sight, I don’t want you to worry about that. You’re only going to put pressure on yourself and know this, the relationship I share with your Papa took years to blossom into true love. Into something permanent and unbreakable. We were hesitant for a very long time, both of our family situations were less than ideal, you understand that, and when Papa first approached me to talk about his sexuality I genuinely thought he might be playing a prank. It took weeks, maybe even months for an unreserved affection to form. That’s very often how it needs to be, don’t ever forget that or feel as though you aren’t moving fast enough, okay? I want you to promise me that.
We are so happy you think he’s amazing, Junior. We honestly couldn’t be prouder of you. We want you to know how much we love you, you are the light of our lives and you mean more to us than we could ever put into words. Just remember to stay safe, and use protection. We trust you know the spells but we are always going to be here if you have any questions or need any advice. Take care of yourself,
Dad and Papa

“Yes,” Evan confirmed with a little nod of his head. He leaned into Theo’s hand with a content sigh. Now, he was safe and could begin to let his guard down. Even with the serum still running through him, he wasn’t worried. There was no question Theo could really ask him that would really cause much of an issue. “Just on my knee, I stumbled over some rubble, it doesn’t need the medicine box, don’t worry about it.” Evan gripped Theo even tighter, not letting him step more than a few inches away as he pulled him for another kiss. That was one of the questions he was hoping Theo wouldn’t ask, but he shouldn’t have expected anything different. “I’ve been with the Order…they needed to know if I had any information about the attack that I didn’t tell them…the only person that needed me tonight was you. I’m sorry I couldn’t be here sooner.” Now that was a complete truth.
Theo couldn’t help glancing down, attempting to gauge any damage. But Evan’s suit was pretty much in tact, there was no physical evidence of any injuries. “How clumsy of you.” He teased, a hesitant smile tugging at his lips. Maybe it wasn’t the time to be making jokes, but somehow it felt like the perfect time. Like Evan needed the familiarity more now than ever. He hummed softly when he was pulled into another kiss, always enjoying it when his boyfriend initiated the contact. “No...” He said quietly, shaking his head. “No, they needed you too, Evan. As long as the war continues, they’re going to need you.” He looked at him, taking in his beauty. His eyes were shining with tears, but he held them back. He needed to be strong. “You’re so brave, darling.” He whispered. “So, so brave.” Finally lowering his hands, he moved them to rest against Evan’s chest, feeling his heart beating rapidly beneath his fingertips. “You’re here now. Nothing else matters.” He kissed him this time, deeply. Hoping to drive away what was left of his fear. “What do you want to do?” He murmured, breaking the kiss to gauge Evan’s reaction to the question, their lips still only inches apart. He could only assume their plans to eat and then steal a dance had been cancelled. And he wanted to make sure he was as comfortable as he could be given what he had been through. “Do you want to shower? Or go to bed? I can make you a hot chocolate... anything you want, okay? Anything.”

Evan couldn’t deny that he was shaken and he didn’t know how to overcome that feeling. He was worried that the Death Eaters were onto him and that was why they didn’t inform him of the attack. In reality, it was likely because of his age and position. The attacking Death Eaters all seemed to be older, less trigger happy in some senses, since the attack was obviously not meant to actually harm anybody. Still, he was nervous. That anxiety followed him to the emergency Order meeting, where he was questioned, which he had been expecting. He was supposed to be the man on the inside to warn them about these attacks and he hadn’t. It lead to some truth serum that Evan wasn’t sure had worn off yet, but it did the trick and they let him leave. He immediately apparated into Theo’s apartment, dead on his feet and nearly collapsed when they hit the carpet. “I’m alive,” he mumbled, enveloping Theo’s waist with both arms. It was a comfort thing as well as a way to keep himself upright. Fuck, he was exhausted. “I’m okay, nothing broken, just a few scrapes and bruises.” At that moment, Evan knew the serum hadn’t worn off. He meant to say he was fine and leave it at that, but his mouth had other ideas. It would take a miracle for Theo not to notice. “You’re ok?”
Theo hushed Evan softly, caressing his cheeks with his thumbs in an attempt to sooth him. He knew right away that he was shaken, not only that but exhausted. How could he not be? “Scrapes and bruises?” He asked. It wasn’t like Evan to be so open. Usually he would brush him off and insist he was fine. “Show me where? I can get the medicine box.” He couldn’t help himself, he leaned forward and kissed him briefly, nodding at his question. “I’m okay, of course I am. I’m worried about you, Evan. Let me worry about you. Where have you been? Who needed you tonight?” A careful way of asking whether he had spent the night with the Order or the Death Eaters. They both knew the answer they would prefer but that didn’t necessarily make it true. If they could will things into existence their life together would be so different.

It was 5 am and Theo hadn’t been able to sleep. After managing to avoid being injured during the attack, he knew Evan would be upset that he didn’t leave or hide when he had the chance, but right now he wasn’t worried about any trivial arguments that might be awaiting them. Right now, he only wanted Evan home. They had agreed to meet in his apartment long before the Death Eaters had made an appearance, to enjoy a little more time together while they were both dressed up in their formal attire. It wasn’t very often they got to see each other looking so smart. He felt sure that wouldn’t matter anymore, but he had kept his clothes on regardless, hoping that if Evan did finally arrive... when Evan finally arrived, they could steal a sense of normalcy, do what they had originally planned to do and share a dance. It was late, far later than he was expecting, but anything could have happened to his boyfriend. There were two organisations he was a part of that might be calling emergency meetings, and then there were the Rosiers who probably wanted to know what their son had done to aid in the fight. His anxiety had been clawing at his chest for the majority of the night, and he wasn’t sure how long he had been pacing the apartment for when he heard the sound of somebody Apparating into his living room. Rushing from his bedroom, where he had been staring desperately out of the window for any sign of the man he loved, he came to a halt as he finally laid eyes on him. The harsh light in the room was painfully bright after so little sleep, but it was worth it just to take in his beauty. “Merlin, you’re okay...” He hurried to greet him, reaching up to cup his face with shaking hands. “I was so worried. Tell me you’re okay?” @evanxrosierx

“I’m aware. You know how I feel about him and how he treated you.” Even now, talking about Benjy made Evan a little annoyed. It had been years, Theo had clearly picked him, but the insecure part of his brain screamed that if Benjy came crawling back for some reason, he might lose. As far as he knew, Theo’s ex was on the correct side of the war and everybody would recognize him as such. There were going to be many people that looked down on Evan for the mark he’d been forced to take. Spy or not. “I’m aware that you did. I never did because I was watching you. The smile on your face when you’re excited about things…and you know things…I honestly think that’s why I came to talk to you that one day. Part of me knew you could help me, but I also knew you were beautiful.” It was a little dramatic and highly sappy, but the core of it was true. Evan had spent a long time watching Theo from afar before approaching him. The circumstances had to be right. “Well,” Evan sighed, dragging his fingers gently through Theo’s hair for a moment, “There are nights that I’m awake, mostly because I wake up dreaming about the things I’ve done, and I don’t want to wake you up. You deserve to sleep peacefully even when I can’t. The nights I don’t wake you up, I hold you and watch. Sometimes you do this thing where I’m pretty sure you’re awake because I hold you and you bury yourself in my chest. Those are the nights I feel so loved. I always feel loved, but those nights are special.” He was still running his fingers through Theo’s hair when the boy tried to pull away. They needed to go back, Evan knew it, but god he really didn’t want to. “Something bad,” Evan whispered, “If I had to guess, Death Eaters. I know this is the minister’s party, but the Black’s are throwing it and I don’t trust them,” Evan pressed his lips harshly to Theo’s, as if it were going to be the last time they ever did so, “Go home. Please. Just in case.”
“I know, I’m sorry.” Theo murmured, already feeling bad for discussing Benjy. He had long since moved forward, but he knew the treatment he had suffered at the hands of his ex frustrated his other half. He laughed quietly, a blush creeping to his cheeks at the compliment. He wasn’t sure he believed that was why Evan had first approached him, but he wanted to. It was a heartwarming thought. “And here I was thinking it was because I was pretty much the only openly gay kid in the school...” He wrinkled his nose, unable to help himself, when Evan mentioned watching him sleep. It wasn’t as though he protested the idea, in fact, he was incredibly guilty of watching Evan sleep too. He just couldn’t imagine he looked very flattering. He had a habit of burying his head into the pillow until his hair became tangled on one side. “I told you to wake me when you had nightmares.” He said, his voice barely louder than a whisper. He didn’t realise how regular of an occurrence it was. He smiled sadly, biting down on his bottom lip. “Half-asleep, half-awake.” He corrected. Even when he was barely conscious his base instinct was to stay close to his boyfriend. “And you are loved, of course you are.” He insisted, falling still when Evan held him in place, a gentle hand running through his hair. “Death Eaters-” He knew how he was able to say the words so calmly but it still terrified him. Somehow that was worse. It only made it more obvious just how caught up he was in their ranks, He opened his mouth to speak again but he was silenced with a kiss. He kissed him back, understanding the sudden desperation, but pulled away before he could become too distracted. “I can’t go home and leave you here. Evan- I can’t do that. Don’t ask me to do that.”

“Oh did you? Because your boyfriend before me transfigured you so many that you just learned that?” Evan was teasing of course, but Theo would know that without a second thought. It was something Evan had done for a long time to boost his own confidence. People never thought anything of it, a Slytherin tearing people down just for the sake of tearing people down? That wasn’t out of the ordinary. Then, once you pushed enough people far enough away, they stopped questioning your motivations and assumed you were just a shitty person. That was exactly what Evan wanted. “Ok, that isn’t how I look when I’m asleep, but to be fair, nobody looks the same awake versus when they’re asleep. You certainly don’t.” As many hours as Theo sat awake and watched Evan sleep, Evan did the same for him. He tried his best not to wake Theo when he had nightmares, instead electing to let him sleep and soaking in his presence instead. “You can have a dog as long as I can have a cat. How does that sound?” Evan squeezed Theo a little tighter to his chest, trying to ignore something that sounded distinctly like screaming coming from the direction they just exited. “We can do that.”
“My boyfriend before you didn’t bring me sunflowers.” Theo admitted with a quiet laugh. Benjy felt so far away now. “But I did pay attention in Herbology.” He had spent many evenings painting the flowers in the Greenhouses, usually while Professor Sprout was marking essays or watering. They had shared so many conversations about plants and their magical properties. It was the only NEWT he had received an Outstanding in. “How would you know that?” He asked, grinning easily when Evan denied looking so peaceful while he was asleep. There were nightmares, of course. Fears that caused a frown to crease his brow, the blood to drain from his face, his bottom lip to tremble. But there were a few nights, nights he always cherished, where he slept soundly. And when he did sleep soundly, be looked so beautiful that he was quite literally breathtaking. “I don’t need to hear about how much of a mess I am when I’m sleeping. I already know.” He waved his boyfriend off, smiling again at the mention of pets. “A dog and a cat?” He thought on the idea for a moment, eventually nodding his head. “I think I like that. A friendship as unlikely as ours.” He was about to lean in and kiss Evan again, unashamedly missing the taste of his lips, when a sudden sound caught his attention. He knew Evan heard it too because his grip had suddenly tightened. He wasn’t sure whether that was comforting or not. Twisting to escape his grasp, he pulled away, turning to look back towards the hall. “What is that?” He whispered, eyes wide as he registered the sound of screaming, a terrified crowd of people. “Evan?” His voice cracked as he caught Evan’s eye, silently begging him to explain, to have some explanation for what was happening. “What’s happening?”

A laugh passed her lips, a genuine one at that. “Oh, don’t sweat, silly. I wouldn’t sell a single thing I wouldn’t use myself, I just like making people squirm.” And it seemed he was easier to make squirm than she’d first realized. After all, anyone who could stand within 5 feet of both herself and Rodolphus had to have some guts. All it did was make her grin. Any man whom she could make uncomfortable was a win in her eyes. “You weren’t prying, Theo,” she said smoothly, painted lips wrapping around his name as she played with the idea of digging deeper into his mind some time. Not here, no. And it would be harmless, of course… But she was quite bored, and her Veela side had been quiet for quite a while. She giggled at the thought of someone, anyone really, being putty in her pretty hands… A shudder of a thrill ran up her spine as she wondered who her next victim might be. “You’re right. Nobody deserves to be lonely. It’s such a shame that both of my dear husbands were taken too soon. Bad luck, they call it. I call it absolutely devastating heartbreak. But then, it’s easier to label some things as bad luck, isn’t it?,” she mused, her thoughts trailing off. “Anyway, Darling, you must forgive me. I see a wonderfully handsome man. I’d be a fool not to try. Do stay… not lonely tonight, yes?,” she said, bowing her head at him before rushing off in the direction of the tall, dark stranger.
Theo definitely didn’t need the woman to tell him that, it was far too obvious in the way she was enjoying his discomfort. “Okay...” He mumbled quietly, glad to hear he wasn’t prying but also completely at a loss of what to say. The longer he spoke to her, the more convinced he became that she was somebody dangerous, somebody he really should be making an effort to avoid. He always treated people with kindness, tried to see the good in them before anything else, but she was making it so difficult. Maybe Evan would know more about her, he made a mental note to ask his boyfriend who she was. It shocked him to learn she had lost two of her husbands, though he worked to keep that shock from his face, not wanting her to be able to use it. He couldn’t imagine the pain of losing the person he loved most in the world. If fact, he spent most of his days pointedly trying not to consider what life would be without him. What would it feel like to lose two loves? “I’m so sorry for your loss.” He said, his sincerity evident in his voice. He meant it, he really did. “I...” He trailed off, turning to look at the man who had caught her attention. Admittedly, he was incredibly handsome, but he was more than flustered by the sudden change in conversation. “Okay... I- good luck.” He cringed inwardly, already embarrassed by his poor conversational skills. But she was long gone by the time a blush crept to his cheeks, and he hurried to disappear into the crowd, hoping their paths didn’t cross anytime again soon.

“I swear it was, I know how much you like sunflowers and Van Gogh,” he says with a serious nod, although a smile quickly forms on his face anyway. He nodded, “Yeah, I just feel like it was always going to happen, but I guess I just needed a shove in the right direction to be serious about it. I just wish it hadn’t been.. well the way it was.” he says sheepishly. He nodded gratefully, “Thanks, Ted. I couldn’t ask that of you though honestly. You’ve got your own place to keep up with. Maybe you could help me with like placing everything just right once I eventually move into my own place.” The finally sauntered up to the bar and Cassian placed his order for a drink that contained pumpkin juice. He perked up at his brother’s mention of painting a mural. “That’d be great honestly. You can paint whatever you want, just whatever you think would suit me or space. And maybe a canvas or two, but I can pay you for your time obviously.” he says the last part quickly, wanting it to be clear that he felt his brother’s talents deserved to be compensated.
“I like sunflowers because I like Van Gogh.” Theo pointed out with a knowing smile. His love of plants had come from a variety of places. With the Hufflepuff common room so full of greenery, and his head of house teaching Herbology, he liked to think he was destined to find a love for them. But it was Van Gogh who was responsible for allowing him to see flowers in a different way, for allowing him to see their true beauty. “Rhys... I understand why you’re leaving, but you have to know Mum and Dad meant well. They aren’t malicious people, they were doing what they thought was right. Don’t... don’t be too hard on them. I’m not sure Mum would be able to take it.” He nodded quietly, almost excited by the prospect of decorating. It had been a very long time since he had ever needed to worry about interior design. “I can do that.” He agreed, taking a Pumpkin Juice from the Mixologist who looked more than annoyed y such a dull order. “I would need to see the rooms before painting anything, but I would like that.” He admitted, shaking his head at the offer of money. “No, no... we’re family, Rhys. That always matters, I couldn’t charge you.”

She looked up at him, talking through a smile with her teeth closed tightly. “Of course, and I’m sure I don’t need to… explain that I prefer discretion.” She ran her tongue over her lips, wetting them before flashing another smile. “And if that’s the case, I have a much wider variety of offerings. Several of which might help you. Or… whoever it is you might be helping.” Finally, her face relaxed into a more natural smile, nodding in understanding. She knew she didn’t have to warn people about her colleague. It was just that she couldn’t stand Rodolphus, so she wanted to make sure everyone knew what shit he was. “Anyway,” she said abruptly, changing the subject from her… let’s call it a second job. Except it paid twice as much. More some nights, depending on the ask. And it was much more fun playing God than it was pushing parchments. “Well, yes?,” she said, as if it was obvious. As if she hadn’t just cried over her last one only 4 months prior. “Is it a crime to want to be loved? I’m so lonely without…” She paused, just for a beat. “Christopher. I only want another good man in my life. Is that so terrible?”
Theo could sense a vague threat behind the woman’s words, she was forcing a smile, allowing him to see that if he didn’t afford her the respect she was demanding, there would be consequences. “Oh... no, I ...” He stumbled over his words, trailing off as he struggled to think of what she could possibly mean by offering him potions to be procured with discretion. “Thank you but what I have now is enough, it’s all I need...” He insisted, eyes widening slightly as she moved the subject onwards, apparently offended by his question. He was a very difficult person to fluster, known for being calm and considerate in almost any situation, but he could feel himself struggling to find words, to respond to her questions. What could he say? “No, of course not.” He said quietly. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to pry.” He bit down on his bottom lip debating on making a joke to lighten the mood. “Nobody should be lonely.” He murmured, deciding against mentioning his own love of good men. “The world is so uncertain right now...”

“Right… Vase with Fifteen Sunflowers. It was on the edge of my tongue I swear,” he said with a small laugh because honestly, he hadn’t known what it was called- just that it had to be one of the favorites of his twin. “Not at the moment no. I’m working to get my own place somewhere in London, nothing crazy but hopefully I can make enough so I can put a down payment and be out of her hair,” he explained quietly. “Yeah… she’s the best honestly, I’m still thinking of ways to thank her for letting me stay with her.” he wasn’t lying, he’d been saying thank you each time he’d come back to her place after a long day at work. He wasn’t sure how long she’d tolerate his overzealous thanking. “No, no not really.” he grimaced. “It’s a temporary thing so I guess asking was dumb of me. Just… nevermind,” he said hoping to drop the topic and move on. “I don’t know how long- Ted,” he said plainly, “I don’t want to stay at home, and I think I’ve been wanting to move out. So now’s the time I start looking for my own place. I haven’t been to Cissa’s for more than a week. And I don’t plan on getting too comfortable either.” he said. He wasn’t sure why he felt the need to be so defensive, but he couldn’t help but to feel like telling his brother of him staying with his best friend was a mistake- he didn’t want to feel like he was taking advantage of her kindness- this was just a bump in the road that would change soon.
“I’m sure it was.” Theo humoured his brother, unable to help the smile tugging at his lips. It always felt as though nothing had changed... but everything had. Everything was different now. “You are?” He asked, wishing he could help in some way. “I don’t have a lot of money, Rhys... but if you ever need any help, I have some savings. Is there... a reason you don’t want to stay at home?” Of course he knew there was, but hearing from his brother’s mouth that he hadn’t managed to make peace with his parents was different to assuming the worst. “I don’t think it was dumb.” He murmured. “Maybe when you find somewhere of your own I could... paint a mural?” He offered, secretly hoping Cassian would say yes. It would be a way to spend time together with a reason, with something there to erase a lot of the tension between them both. “Or a canvas, maybe...”

“Thanks,” he said his hand scratching the back of his neck since he didn’t know what to think. He was sure they looked like a sight, the two of them- identical in nearly every aspect obviously other than their attire, and hair color, but still- they were mirrored images. Part of him wished he could’ve worn something like his brothers, he looked much more comfortable and like himself, whereas he felt like he was playing dress-up yet again. He watched his brother stare at the ground, and he couldn’t help but feel guilty because maybe compliments weren’t something they were ready to do yet. He wondered when they ever would be, and when he’d get to go back to having his best friend again. “Was it? Well, whoever gave it to you has good taste. It looks just like that one Van Gogh painting.” he comments, hoping his brother would know what he meant. His eyebrows raised at the mention of his parents. “I told them that I’d been talking to you,” he said studying his brother, “ and I’m not staying at home anymore. I’ve been living with Cissa. She has a guest house on her property that she’s been letting me stay in.” He motioned for him to walk with him. “You should come by sometime. I really want to make it look homier and I feel like you’d be able to help me, with the paint in my room and whatnot, if that’s something you’d be willing to do- of course.”
Theo laughed quietly when Cass tried and failed to name the painting on his bow tie. “It’s called Vase with Fifteen Sunflowers.” He said quietly, a smile tugging at his lips. There was always something so beautiful about the way Van Gogh viewed the flowers. They made him incredibly happy and that, in turn, made him happy too. “You’re... not staying with Mum and Dad?” He asked, feeling his chest tighten with worry. He was expecting a polite, if not uncomfortable, conversation with his brother, not one that came with life altering revelations. “Narcissa?” He was careful to use her full name, they had worked to hard to continue their friendship in secret. If he started calling her Cissa it wouldn’t be long until people figured out they were still incredibly close. “That’s kind of her, Rhys. I’m... happy you have somewhere.” Swallowing his emotion, a frown creased his brow. “She’s letting you decorate?” He asked, unable to help himself. He had stupidly assumed the stay would be brief, maybe he had been wrong. Maybe things were far more serious than that. “How... how long do you plan on staying there for? I don’t understand...”

A lack of response from his boyfriend was more than enough for him to shift his tactic, though it was a dramatic shift. The hand that had been previously used to hold Theo’s neck, dropped down his chest and stopped right above the waistband of his pants. “Shhh, to you,” his hand paused for a long moment as he smirked to himself, “You mean like the time I taught you to properly suck dick? Or about the longevity of transfigured sunflowers? They were both very important lessons if we’re honest.” Evan didn’t actually think that was what Theo was talking about, but it wouldn’t be like him if he didn’t make some sort of comment about it. The night was already strange enough and Theo seemed slightly on edge from it all. “How can I not look serious about serious topics? Not to mention, when I’m just letting my face rest…I look like I’m angry and serious. It’s just how things are,” he nipped at Theo’s ear, “It’ll be perfect. You and me.”
Feeling Evan’s hand ghost the waistband of his trousers, Theo’s breath caught in his throat and he gasped quietly, biting down hard on his bottom lip. “I... already knew about the longevity of transfigured Sunflowers.” He muttered breathlessly, choosing to answer his boyfriend’s question by pointedly not answering it. “That isn’t how you look when you rest.” He said, his voice soft, as gentle as his touch. He reached up with one hand to brush a strand of hair away from his forehead. “That’s how you train yourself to look when you think people are watching you. When you’re with me... when you’re home, you look... peaceful.” A smile tugged at his lips when he felt Evan’s lips graze his ear, and he failed to suppress a shudder. “We can have a house...” He said, staring at a building in a painting at the end of the hall, he could see it over Evan’s shoulder. It was a beautiful old manor house, the outside artfully covered in blossoming flowers. “And a dog?” He tried, unsure whether Evan would want a pet. It wasn’t something they had ever discussed. “A rescue... I think I would like that. Two people without a home just... making one, and taking in an animal who knows what it’s like to be displaced. Can we do that?”

Cassian’s smile wavered for a moment at the sight of his brother, seeing as it had been over a week since they’d spoken. He had stayed home from work for two days after leaving his house to go to Narcissa’s and when the morning of the third day came around he’d forced himself to get ready for work. Ultimately it was good that he didn’t lay around sulking, but merlin what would he give right now to become one with the wall. He’d play it safe, he was always trying his best to be civil with his brother but this was a Ministry event, his parents were somewhere amongst the crowd and he didn’t want to hear the earful he’d get for leaving early. So that left him with his current situation. “You look nice, Teddy,” he says with a gentle smile, noting the intricate bowtie his twin wore. “It brings out the color in your eyes.”
Shoving his hands into his pockets he kicked carefully at the ground not sure what to say next. Words came to him anyway. “I was just going to grab something to drink. Did you want to get something to eat or sit and grab a bite?” he asked motioning toward the bar across the room.
“I... thanks.” Theo said, feeling incredibly awkward. There was no precedent for this, he still didn’t know where he stood with his brother. He had been so focused on avoiding his parents, he had forgotten about avoiding Cass. Then again, did he really want to avoid Cass? “So do you...” He murmured, ducking his head to stare down at his shoes. It was ridiculous to let something as simple as his eye colour get to him, but his mother always had loved the colour of his eyes. As he was sure every parent found something to fixate on and fuss over, it had always been about the forest green, she had even named him Theodore Forest because of it. “It was a gift, actually...” He admitted, reaching up to touch his bow tie, wondering whether he should have been so honest. “I...” He faltered, surprised by the offer as he looked back up, looking for any evidence of it not being genuine. “Yes... that would be... won’t Mum and Dad be upset with you if they see you talking to me?”

“Theodore…,” she repeated, nodding her head. “Well Theodore, now that I’m not working I can tell you that quite frankly I don’t give a shit who it was for. But if you ever need anything like that again, come back when it’s dark. Yeah? It saves us all a whole lot of hassle.” A sigh passed her lips. “And by the way, I wouldn’t put it past Rodolphus to use you for… whatever it was, the tranquilizer her had, I wouldn’t put it past him to use you for practice. Word to the wise.” She sipped her beverage, giving him a once over. He was much too young for her. And there was no way he had enough money to his name to be worth anything. “You don’t have to be grateful. Like I said, I couldn’t care less who it was for. Pretending I did was the exhausting part.” Her eyes were scanning the crowd again, having lost the man she’d spotted before. She sighed, disappointed in possibly missing out on a wonderful man because of him. “You know, that could have been my next husband that just disappeared into the crowd because of all of… this.” She made a gesture between the two of them. “Now I have to start from scratch.”
Theo faltered, unable to hide his surprise. He wasn’t sure why he was so affected by the woman’s apparent indifference, but he hadn’t been expecting it from somebody with such an important job. “I... oh... okay, thank you.” He bit down on his bottom lip, nervous at the thought of anything illicit happening in a store just a few buildings away from where he lived. Then again, knowing he could buy Evan more anxiety medication if and when he needed it was a relief. He would be lying if he said it wasn’t. Barely registering the warning about Rodolphus, he nodded absentmindedly. It was information he already knew. The man was dangerous, that was essentially common knowledge at this point in time. He was already on his radar, so he was doing everything within his power to avoid the man. “I don’t plan on our paths crossing again.” He said quietly, a frown creasing his brow when she continued to elaborate on just how little mind she paid her customers. “You’re... you’re searching for a husband here?” He echoed, unsure whether she was joking. She didn’t seem like the type to joke.

“Hey, hey, hey, where do you think you’re going,” Evan murmured as Theo tried to shy away from the neck kisses. The Slytherin knew exactly why Theo was reacting this way, but that only made him want to do it even more. To the point that Evan slid one of his hands around Theo’s neck to gently hold him in place so he could press a few more kisses on the same exact spot he’d chosen a moment ago. Internally, he counted to five kisses and slowly released his lover to shy away all he wanted. Maybe it was the pureblood, Slytherin bullshit in him, but when Evan wanted something, Evan found a way to get something. That something was usually Theo. “I know you do, you make sure to tell me every time we’re together in the form of moaning my name very loudly. Silencing charms were the best thing Hogwarts taught me.” Evan leaned back with a little wink before a more somber expression befell his features. He knew exactly how Theo felt because he felt the exact same way. It was almost impossible to keep his arm around his fiancee when Theo was standing across the room. “I know. It isn’t fair, not even a little bit, and I promise you, as soon as it’s safe, you’ll never have to leave my side.”
Theo laughed, the sound echoing in the empty hall. He couldn’t help himself. He let Evan kiss his neck, focusing on the painting in front of him rather than the sensation, waiting until his boyfriend pulled away before relaxing again. “Shhh,” he hushed him quietly, enjoying the rush that came with being so obvious in a public place. It was a placebo effect, of course. They had been careful, they weren’t going to get caught. They wouldn’t dare meet anywhere they knew would put them at risk. But just being outside of his apartment with the man he loved felt incredible. “I can think of a few things I learned at Hogwarts that are far more useful than a Silencing Charm.” He murmured, raising his eyebrows with a grin. “No...” He said quietly, his own smile faltering when Evan’s did. “No, no, no...” He cupped his face gently, fingertips ghosting his skin as he encouraged him to smile again. “Don’t do that, don’t look so serious.” He pleaded. “Tell me more... tell me about when it’s safe and I won’t ever have to leave your side.”

She shouldn’t have worn heels. She most definitely should not have worn heels. Her bloody ankles were swollen, and felt very near bursting, though she knew such a thing to be impossible. And on top of all of that, she couldn’t even drink. Perhaps it was best she didn’t, anyway. After all, she was looking for a new husband… One to fill that horrible void in her bank account heart. She had plenty of savings, but what was a lonely, pregnant woman like herself to do in a mansion all alone? She’d found refuge at a quiet table, resting her feet on another chair. She was sipping her sparkling water, shifting uncomfortably in her seat as she felt her stomach fighting against her dress, glancing around the room. When she finally laid eyes on a man who at least appeared to be dressed suitably enough for a girl like her, she stood up, nearly being pushed back into her seat as she did. (Okay, that was dramatic, he hadn’t even touched her, but what was she if not dramatic?). “Bloody hell,” she said, looking down to see if she’d spilled on herself. “Don’t you know to watch where you’re going?” Finally looking up, she recognized the younger boy, narrowed her eyes at him. “Ah, Leo, right? I see Rodolphus didn’t kill you,” she grumbled. “How’d that medication work out for… you?”
Theo immediately felt his heart skip a beat when he realised who he had nearly walked into. He had not so secretly been hoping to never see the woman again. It wasn’t her fault, of course. He was the one hiding, keeping secrets, and he he was confident she had only been worried for his well being given the nature of the potion. But still... being dishonest felt awkward. He was good at it because he needed to be, that didn’t mean he was comfortable. “I’m sorry, I was... distracted.” He admitted, a blush creeping to his cheeks. “Theo. Theodore...” He corrected, unsure what else to say. “He didn’t kill me, no... I’m sure he would like to try.” Smiling nervously at his own joke, he wondered whether it could even be considered a joke given the truth of the statement. “Oh... fine. Perfect. Thank you again. I know you went against your instincts to give it to me but I’m... I’m incredibly grateful.” The potion was still sitting in his bathroom cabinet. He had yet to tell Evan of it’s existence. So far he hadn’t needed to and he really wanted things to stay that way.

Evan had been expecting Theo to jump a little and he tightened his grip on the boy just as it happened. He knew he shouldn’t be sneaking, but it was fun to see Theo’s reaction when he realized it was just Evan. There was something deeply satisfying about realizing how comfortable Theo was with him, and Evan felt the exact same way. “I think you’ll find that you’re full of it,” he kissed Theo’s neck after a moment, “Or maybe we’re the art. Both pieces separately are nice, but together they’re something beyond magical.” It was corny, but Evan was deeply corny when it came to Theo because he could be himself and have true emotions. “Takes one to know one, I think you just like the suit.” He had a grin on his face as he ran a hand up Theo’s back. “How has your night been?”
A soft sound escaped Theo as Evan pressed his lips against his neck and he quickly shied away from the contact, face flushing. He smiled, shaking his head in wonder as he stared at his boyfriend, listening to his words. They were about as beautiful as the sound of his voice, and he knew some people might find them too powerful, or even too much like a slogan you might find in Madame Puddifoot’s on Valentine’s Day, but he loved it. Merlin, did he love it. After leaving home, what self confidence he had seemed to disappear, his idea of self worth slowly crumbling as he realised his family no longer wanted him because of who he was as a person. Evan made him feel worth something, Evan made him feel like maybe... maybe he might be beautiful too. “I do like the suit.” He breathed, running his hands up Evan’s chest to link his fingers behind his neck. “And I like what’s under it.” He added, his voice barely louder than a whisper. “My night has been... difficult.” There really was no point in lying, even if it wouldn’t be fair to complain when he knew Evan had it so much worse. “I just want this to be over, this war... I want to be by your side not... not staring at you from across the room. It doesn’t feel fair.”
