Stanarrator is such a sad and beautiful ship.
First and foremost; The fact that they will (canonically) never be together, because it all follows a script and narrator has to follow the script, it just hurts.
And the fact that even if narrator did (which he totally did btw) have feelings for Stanley he could never act on them because it’s not part of the story. He has to follow the story because if he doesn’t then he has no purpose.
Stanley is (canonically) the player, but ignoring canon.. I feel like he would hate the narrator, making it a completely unrequited love situation (just adding to the pain and beauty really)
It seems that narrator doesn’t even remember resets, so if there was some way that they strayed away from the script (I know most endings is the result of Stanley going against the script, but I mean if Narrator had willingly and of his own accord), found each other (figuratively), or there was some confession.. would narrator even remember?
If Stanley was to tell (in some way) narrator what had happened, narrator wouldn’t even be able to remember, and he would likely ignore Stanley or completely reset because it’s not following his carefully constructed story.
So even if there was confession or something to that affect, Narrator wouldn’t even remember.
But the main thing for me is what The Curator says,
“Oh, look at these two. How they wish to destroy one another. How they wish to control one another. How they both wish to be free.”
And this shows how they do need each other..
“How they wish to control one another” :
Obviously, narrator has some control over Stanley, but not really.. he has control over the story, but part of me wonders if he really has control over the story.
And if you think about it, he has very little control over Stanley, that’s the player job. He can reset, he can block of doors and all that, but he can’t really make Stanley do what he wants.
Think about the broom closet ending, for example. He clearly doesn’t want Stanley to be in there, but he can’t just make Stanley leave.
In a way, Stanley has more control than narrator does.
He chooses where to go, and often that is against narrators story.
The only ending that is following Narrators og story is the freedom ending.
There are endings where stanley does what narrator asks him to do (i.e. the zending, he goes through the door narrator wants him too) but that is after narrator basically begs him too.
“How they wish to destroy one another.” :
Narrator does destroy Stanley in some endings, (like the countdown ending), but in others he begs Stanley not to destroy himself (like the zending).
To me (and this is just my view on it), Stanley doing the freedom ending is his own way of trying to destroy the narrator. Not in the same way narrator destroys Stanley (by blowing him up) but in a way that would work for narrator.
Narrator is a very powerful character, and could even be seen as some Eldritch god like being, so it would make sense if he was immortal, or just literally can’t be killed, or like the game he has no end.
So, if he was, Stanley couldn’t physically kill the narrator, (mainly also because he is a voice with no body), so he has to destroy him in another way.
By rendering him useless.
If Stanley escaped, then narrator would have no purpose. He would have no protagonist. In the skip button ending, the fact that Stanley is (essentially) leaving him drives him to insanity.
And this is how Stanley tries to mentally and emotionally destroy him.
“How they both wish to be free.” :
(Kind of going into my own views but oh well)
So they both wish to be free, and this is canon. Every single ending and reset is Stanley’s attempt at escape, and I mean all of them. Even endings like the bucket gameshow, which just seems like a silly ending, really is also another attempt at escape.
Stanley wishes to be free so much he would go to the length of killing himself to do so.
He will never be free (another thing that makes it sad/beautiful)
Narrator also wants to be free. It isn’t practically apparent, as often he seems to enjoy playing god.
But.. one of the last things (or the last thing I can’t remember) he says in the zending is that he is “going back” and he says this like he hates it, but is resigned to it. Through out the whole ending in fact he begs Stanley not to make him go back.
I’m not sure, but to me it seems like he kind of gets into a weird headspace, almost like he thinks (or knows) freedom is near and Stanley killing himself is stoping the freedom from coming (which it is in a way, as the game resets.)
There is also the chance that he just wants to go back to the Zen room, where he truly felt happy (more pain yay)
He also has to keep Stanley there. If Stanley escaped, he would be nothing. He would have no purpose, no protagonist, no story.
So:
“They both wish to control each other” ;
Stanley has control over himself and where the game/story line goes
Narrator can’t control what Stanley does, but can alter parts of the game, but has to stay on the script (even though a lot of endings stray off the script)
Plus, Stanley actually has more control than narrator when you think about it
“They both wish to destroy each other” ;
Narrator literally destroys Stanley
Stanley destroys narrator by making him useless (plus this shows that narrator needs Stanley)
“And they both wish to be free” ;
Neither of them will ever escape
Every ending is Stanley’s attempt at freedom, even the silly endings
And Narrator clearly wishes for freedom too, but A. he has to follow the script and B. He is useless without Stanley or the story, so he can’t let Stanley escape
The fact that it’s a constant push and pull from both of them to be in control and have the freedom they both want just makes it so sad.
They can’t both have what they want, and this shows really how much they need each other, especially narrator.
Stanley wishes to be free, but if he escapes Narrator has no purpose
Narrator has to keep Stanley there so he isn’t useless, even though Stanley’s attempts at freedom
Basically, narrator needs Stanley because if Stanley escapes he has no purpose.
And Stanley needs narrator because if narrator escaped or was even just gone, (like in the ending of the skip button), Stanley has no story to go against, no body (pun unintended) to guide him, he is just a man who is even more alone, wandering around.. lost.
I think narrator knows he needs Stanley more than Stanley knows he needs narrator, which to me is why curator told Stanley “Can you see? Can you see how much they need one another?”
Because they do. Without eachother there is no story for either of them, and the story is the only way either can even hope to be free.
So yeah.
I absolutely fucking hate and love them, because their relationship has so many layers to it; the hatred, the love, and the need.
It’s honestly soul crushing.
