Opportunity- a set of circumstances that makes it possible to do something; good position, chance, or prospect, as for advancement or success. One saying I've heard over the years is, "Opportunity is what you make of it." I believe that's true. However, we often hear society talk about people that have privileges because of who their parents are or who they know. Those are opportunities they have because of their relationships. Is that privilege? Maybe, but too often, a person is presented with an opening and they fail to act. That is wasted opportunity. There have been plenty of children of affluent parents who end up on drugs and coasting through life on Daddy's money. Is that privilege? I would count that as wasted opportunity. There are those who believe they make their own opportunities and success is theirs alone; with no help from anyone. I know, at one time, that was me. I had to learn that my success was opportunity that I grabbed onto. God showed me that I didn't accomplish all that I had done by myself. Yes, I worked hard to deserve an opportunity, but that opportunity had to be given to me by someone else. Someone who saw my potential, hard work, and dedication. You can work hard and ask for more. You can work hard and be presented an opportunity without asking. Either way, there is someone else who sees your potential. It could be your parents, family, friends, spouse, co-worker, boss, mentor or even a stranger who is used by God to open a door at just the right time. I am thankful for those who helped me in my life; they provided me with opportunities to grow and be better professionally and personally. If you're honest with yourself, I'm sure you can point to someone who has provided you an opportunity for change, growth, and success. What you did with it was your choice. If you don't believe it's happened yet, keep an eye out for open doors. Look for opportunities everywhere. Be thankful for the people that God uses to open doors. And just because you may not have reached the level you want to reach (yet!) don't be angry at someone else who seems to have had a better opportunity. Maybe they did and maybe they didn't. Maybe they were just looking for it and grabbed on with both hands when opportunity came calling. Ask God to send you opportunities and be ready to grab on when they come. Support one another. Business (and life) is hard enough without shredding each other. Let's do better as a society and talk about opportunity, not privilege.
