alright essay cancelled but I've been up since 4 in the morning so while I'm stuck awake I might as well spill some thoughts

The takeaway from Girls und Panzer is that the needs and preferences of the individual are more important than tradition (exemplified by Miho and Hana's character arcs, and arguably continuing now with Erika's in the ongoing Das Finale). This runs counter to the fascist narrative that our traditions are what made us great and we must double down on them if we wish to become great again.

ONLY IN THIS SENSE

...is Girls und Panzer antifascist.

Now I'm not here to play apologist. In all honesty I hate this show for its historical irreverence and the way it reduces militarism, and especially Nazism, to an aesthetic (many such examples; an exhaustive list would be exhausting to write).

Arguments for satire ignore the simple fact that none of the characters are ever truly judged, either by the other characters or by the narrative, and in fact they are treated as being ultimately good-natured and harmless regardless of who they very blatantly represent. This was no better demonstrated than in the aggravating Taiyaki War! OVA, where the narrative runs shockingly left until it slides into a bullshit centrist "compromise" at the end.

I could keep typing but you get the point. Terrible show. Also I'm turning off reblogs on all my old posts while I decide whether or not I want to delete them outright. I don't want to be responsible for getting someone else into Girls und Panzer (yet another reason I cancelled Panzerschokolade).

The Girls und Panzer Tank Corner OVAs are so funny to me. More shows need to let an autistic character create an in universe documentary to infodump about their special interests.

The only upload of it i could find was kinda insane. Like you know how sometimes with old fanfics in between chapters they would have the characters non diagetically arguing with the writer. This upload had the autistic girl arguing with the wehraboo translator in the translation notes because the translator refused to accept yukari pointing out all the ways german tanks in ww2 were shit.

The Anglerfish team sitting at a table in a café. Erika and Maho, both in uniform, approach the table.

ERIKA: "Vizekommandantin?" ("Vice-Commander?")

Miho looks up in surprise.

ERIKA: "Ach, die ehemalige, meine ich." ("Ah, the former, I mean.")

MIHO: "Maho!"

OTHERS: "Huh?"

MAHO: "Ich hätte ja nicht gedacht, dass du immer noch Panzerfährst." ("I certainly didn't think you'd still compete in Tankery.")

In this first part, Erika and Maho are speaking German because they're pretty much ignoring the others and they want to talk directly to Miho. Miho also responds in German (although it really only counts for accent, since she only says her sister's name), and this is partly out of surprise and partly to match what she's hearing.

Yukari stands up.

YUKARI: "If I may say something, I don't think Miho's decision was incorrect in that match you had."

ERIKA: "I think someone needs to mind her own business."

MAHO: "Gehen wir." ("Let's go.")

ERIKA: "Ja, Oberkommandantin." ("Yes, Commander-in-Chief.")

Maho and Erika are done with the conversation, so they switch back to German as much because they're talking amongst themselves as to signal that they're not interested in talking to Anglerfish.

As they walk away, Erika turns back. She's decided to hector the whole group now, so she switches to English again.

ERIKA: "You're facing Saunders High in the first match. Be sure you don't fight so poorly that you end up damaging the name of Nishizumi Style."

SAORI: "Hey! What's your problem?!"

HANA: "I do believe that was quite rude ma'am!"

Erika stops walking.

ERIKA: "I find you participating in Tankery rude."

She turns around to face Anglerfish team.

ERIKA (cont'd): "You're just some no-name school."
