It’s so hard being both a John Walker defender and a Sam and Bucky defender. I love all of them and how complicated they are. But the truth is, Sam and Bucky were totally in the wrong for how they treated Walker in the beginning. Like, when they asked him if he had ever taken a bomb, Walker said “four times with a helmet.” That’s the smart thing to do. Acting like that’s a cop-out is basically the same as saying someone taking a bullet for you while wearing body armor isn’t brave. Or that a firefighter going into a burning building with fireproof clothing doesn’t deserve praise or recognition for heroism. Walker even explicitly admitted he didn’t want to be Steve Rogers — he just wanted to be the best Captain America he could be.
At the same time, Sam and Bucky were both coping with a lot, so I don’t expect them to always act logically. But still, Sam gave up the shield and then got mad at Walker for having it, when really he should have taken that up with the government. Even if Walker had refused the shield, it was government property, not really his to keep. It does make sense, though, to try and talk to Walker about it since it would’ve been easier to convince him than the government.
Walker wasn’t out of line for calling Sam a “wingman.” He was using it as a military term and had no knowledge of Sam and Steve’s deeper relationship. Sam, however, also wasn’t wrong for being offended — his bond with Steve was more than that, and he was valid in being insulted.
Walker’s biggest issue was that he was trying to take down a group that had some good points instead of attempting to communicate and work things out. But let’s not forget: Walker was a war veteran for nearly twenty years, someone who followed orders without question. He trusted the government he fought for to a worrying degree. He was trained to obey since the age of eighteen, and after what happened with Steve Rogers, the government clearly picked someone more easily manipulated.
Walker being furious that Sam and Bucky broke Zemo out is completely understandable, considering Zemo killed the king of Wakanda. At the same time, Zemo was their lead, so that choice also makes sense.
Walker killing a Flag Smasher wasn’t completely unjustified either. Should he have done it? No. But was it unreasonable? Still no. These were terrorists harming people for their cause, and they had killed someone. Walker breaking down after Lemar’s death and not thinking logically makes sense, but it doesn’t excuse his actions.
What made it worse was Sam and Bucky demanding the shield from him right after Lemar’s death, barely trying to talk him down. That was awful. Walker was unstable, yes, but Sam especially should have handled it better or come at another time.
At the same time it make since Sam wanted the shield back since Walker has proven to be completely unstable.
Should Walker be Captain America? Obviously not. His entire mindset is about following orders and not asking qeustion. Which is bad when the governmentis incredibly corrupt. Also his mental instability makes him unfit for the role. I love him, but he wouldn’t make a good Cap.
Is he morally gray?
Absolutely. But he leans more toward the light side, and circumstances pushed him further into the dark. Honestly, half the Marvel heroes are morally light gray anyway.
And I don’t even want to get into the fans who hate Sam for no reason other than racism, because that makes these arguments even worse.
Bottom line: I don’t think Walker did anything that's horrendous that other heroes in the MCU haven’t also done. I also think Sam and Bucky played a major part in his downfall and are partially to blame. But it’s also clear that all three of them had issues and needed therapy. In my opinion, if everyone had just gone to therapy like they should have, all of this could have been solved.

being anti ai is making me feel like in going insane. "you asked for thoughts about your characters backstory and i put it into chat gpt for ideas". studies have proven its making people dumber. "i asked ai to generate this meal plan". its causing water shortages where its data centers are built. "ill generate some pictures for the dnd campaign". its spreading misinformation. "meta, generate an image of this guy doing something stupid". its trained off stolen images, writing, video, audio. "i was talking with my snapchat ai-" theres no way to verify what its doing with the information it collects. "youtube is impletmenting ai based age verification". my work has an entire graphics media department and has still put ai generated motivational posters up everywhere. ai playlists. ai facial verification. google ai microsoft ai meta ai snapchat ai. everyone treats it as a novelty. every treats it as a mandatory part of life. am i the only one who sees it? am i paranoid? am i going insane? jesus fucking christ. if i have to hear one more "well at least-" "but it does-" "but you can-" im about to lose it. i shouldnt have to jump through hoops to avoid the evil machine. have you no principles? no goddamn spine? am i the weird one here?

Just because John Walker’s best friend and girlfriend are black doesn’t mean he doesn’t have racial prejudice or doesn’t commit micro aggressions.
It’s very evident in the way he acts like Bucky is in charge of Sam and constantly dismisses him. And also the way he disrespected the Dora Milaje touching Ayo without permission, calling their weapons pointy sticks and telling them they don’t have jurisdiction in Latvia as if he, an American, should have any.

I can see a SamQuin story where…
It’s a known fact that Sam Wilson is close with his partners to the point of people wondering if there’s something between them.
It doesn’t help that no one knows much about his love life pat highscool.
Riley, Steve, Natasha, Rhodey, Bucky… they all had rumors with Sam.
And maybe this is a little bit of Sam Wilson lore Joaquin had known about even before working with him. It added to the mystic.
It’s not why he tried so hard to become Sam’s partner, not at all. It’s just a neutral fact.
When he asks Sam about his relationships with Steve and Bucky, he genuinely smiles and tells him about their friendship. Apparently there’s no more to it, and Joaquin believes him. He’s just physical with his friendship, that’s it, that’s all.
It’s only once he receives his first hug from Sam that he understands.
He gets it.
He wants it again.
He wants it everyday.
And maybe Sam never meant more with them… but Joaquin definitely wants more with Sam.

jfc a character growing into a new role is not a mischaracterization if we literally follow them every step of the way and every step has a logical jumping point from one to the other. why do yall want characters to be static forever????
im so serious when i say this: sam is probably THE most consistently characterized avengers character in the mcu. im not even being biased when i say he’s the only character who never suffers a moment of ooc writing. he is stewarded SO well in the fuckass mcu. even with how shafted he got in his own fucking solo movie he is consistently characterized so well.
anyway it’s obvious when yall spout off about this that it’s, again, just thinly veiled racism so like. stop pretending.

I miss the og Sam Wilson. The guy we met first. He was a soldier that was skilled, knowledgeable and devoted enough that he was *chosen* to pilot a highly experimental but extremely useful piece of machinery - the Falcon Wings.
And when he was no longer actively deployed, he worked with the veterans to make their lives better, easier. He could have done anything with his time, but he *chose* to help others like himself. Especially considering that he definitely had some trauma as a result of his partner's death. He chose to deal with the issues that seeing Riley plummet to his death caused in him and then decided to help others reach that point in their lives.
And when Steve and Natasha showed up at his front door, he was willing to help them, putting his own life at risk because he *chose* to help them.
I respect that man. I miss the soldier that worked hard enough, was skilled enough that he was *chosen* for something that not a lot of people would have even been considered for, within the army.
That Sam Wilson? He was awesome.
Then somewhere in the Falcon and the Winter Soldier, something goes weird and it builds up, essentially ruining his character for me.
He's a bit too preoccupied by the image he should be portraying than being himself. He's become very self conscious of his image in front of the others. He's no longer behaving like himself, but more like a politician, trying to make sure he looks good in front of others.
Also, the Avengers name issue that apparently happened, I have no idea of the full extent of what is going on in Sam's head, because we don't actually see him in the movie. But I don't understand why he is suing them because not even the thunderbolts think they'll get to keep the name. Not even the civilians think they are the "New Avengers". Then why the legal drama? Why would he feel threatened by a group of people who don't even have the people's support? I hope we get a proper answer in Doomsday where all of the thunderbolts and Sam are expected to show up.

people in fandoms acting too bold trying to dogpile two Black users who’ve done nothing but be rightfully frustrated over the misuse of sam’s tag over the course of the mcu. using slurs and degeratory terms to boot? oh some of you guys don’t deserve to call yourselves sam wilson ‘fans’

I keep seeing the take that authors on AO3 need to stop deleting their fics and instead to orphan them without any explanation of the consequences of orphaning a fic and as an author I really need to say something to this.
Stop telling people to just orphan their fics.
Orphaning a fic means giving up any and all ownership over it. No way to claim it back, edit it or delete it. Yes it's an archive but an author should still have the right to delete their work if they feel like they don't want it to be up anymore.
Readers always scream for authors to orphan their fics instead of deleting because they feel like they have a right to the fanworks that is shared with them for free. If it's so important to you to not lose a fic, download it. Also comment and encourage the authors, instead of telling them to give up all ownership to their work.
To authors, if you think about deleting your fics, there are other options you should employ first. If you don't want it connected to your name, put it into an anonymous collection. As long as it's in there, noone can see you wrote it, you still can edit ot or delete it and moderate comments on it. You can even move it to anther account, just create another one, add it as co author and then take your main account off. Then you can still edit it from your second account but it's no longer connected to your account.
If you don't want it to show anymore put it in a unrevealed collection, that way, the fic won't show up but it's still there, you can still see it, read comments and make it public again.
If you feel the urge to delete your fic, try one of these options first and see how you feel about it after a while, you can still delete or orphan afterwards, but this hopefully makes your decision easier.
Only orphan a fic if you're 100% sure. This is permanent, there is no way back from that, AO3 support will NOT help you if you did it on accident or change your mind. Don't listen to people telling you to just orphan it, make very sure, this is what you want.
