Day 4 of Fashion in Context One (Jimmy Choo Academy)
I felt that today was the most powerful and thought provoking session we had in class so far, we spent an hour and a half talking about mood/concept boards. When we went through the 3rd year concept boards there were two that really grabbed my attention, one that discussed her traumatic events of her brother sexually abusing her, how that stole her identity and her parents disregarded these disgusting things happening to her for the sake of their reputation, but she still found the strength to put that pain into art to move people such as myself and a massive ‘f*ck you’ to her abuser and those who doubted her. the second one was about a student who was dealing with a terminal illness and who was coming to terms with their own mortality from what i remember, referencing zero funerals in japan, that were funerals held for people who are still yet to die. He used colors in his mood board that reflected this and also applied it in his final collection. I felt so moved by both of these, i hope i can create something as inspiring in the near future.

Day 3 of Fashion in Context One (Jimmy Choo Academy)
Why do we wear so much black? Today one of the Boston Manor Staff, Katie Hinchliffe taught us the meaning of black clothing and how it was used in situational contexts such as funerals or the loss of a loved one. What really interested me was the sexist undertones of how long women had to be in black mourning clothing compared to men throughout history. These black mourning garments date back as far as the Roman Empire where it was believed that they wore black so the souls of the dead couldn't see them. We also looked at the different variations of black mourning clothes that were exclusive to women; deep mourning, ordinary or second mourning, and half-mourning

Day 2 of Fashion in Context One (Jimmy Choo Academy)
Continuing after the previous session we moved on to identification theory. We dived deep into interesting sub-themes such as gender differentiation, sumptuary laws, social status, and the multiple lenses of identification theory in religion, Gender differentiation interested me differently than the others and had me thinking hard, about how clothing with a wider variety of styles was catered towards women while men catered to more practical clothes fit for multiple situations, I discovered the first woman to start wearing trousers was Elizabeth Smith Miller, an American activist who broke the boundaries of social norms of her time by publishing a picture of her wearing trousers in her magazine in 1855 'The Lily' (Turin, 2023), through this crusade of hers I believe it became a small catalyst for why it is more widely accepted for women to wear men's clothes throughout history but not vice versa.

DAY 1 of Fashion in Context One (Jimmy Choo Academy)
We jumped straight into fashion theories, Stefan discussed the definition of what a theory is according to different sources such as “A conceptual network of propositions that explain an observable phenomenon” (Lillethun, 2007,). Soon after we went into a more interesting part of the lecture, we sat and went through the multiple different fashion theories; Protection theory, Health theory, Adornment theory, Modesty Theory, Immodesty theory and identification theory. I learned these are the different purposes of clothing that have been debated. We particularly focused on the questions surrounding immodesty and modesty theory such as 'What constitutes Immodest Clothing?' and 'Is there ever a link between what is regarded as Modest Clothing and Immodest Attraction? we discussed these questions in groups and i expressed a thought that i had to myself to the class, I thought (and still think) the true purpose of why the wearer is wearing what they are wearing gives the true label of what they're wearing, immodest clothing can cease to be immodest given situational context such as the beach. In the second question, I remember thinking subjectivity links these two opposites, through many different cultures and demographics modest clothing can be seen as immodest and gain unwanted immodest attraction. -Nziza Karela
