2011 Cinder Block booth at MAGIC Tradeshow, Las Vegas.
Cinder Block was a music merchandising company billed as a one-stop shop for tour, e-com, and online-retail. As Art Director I spearheaded a minor rebranding that focused more on that connection.
This booth is good example of how we executed that connection. It was designed and built to resemble a small record shop, complete with a record bin which held shirt boards arranged like LP’s for browsing.
Banners featuring a live audience and the new branding make up the walls of the booth. The new logo is featured on the backdrop, as well as the signage on the mini checkout stand at left. It was applied as a vinyl decal on wood.
The table at center featured a quilt of Radiohead tees, and the 2011 catalogue which was designed to resemble a worn LP.

Cinder Block catalogue design from 2012.
Cinder Block was a music merchandising company. As Art Director I oversaw some minor rebranding steered in a direction that highlighted the connection to the music industry, including a logo meant to resemble an LP label, as well as business cards (featured in an earlier post) that included a die cut hole and gloss print mimicking the grooves of a vinyl record.
The concept of the 2011 catalogue was a worn LP, so the 2012 follow-up was designed to be a ‘re-mastered’ release featuring ‘new tracks’, etc.
The table of contents were meant to feel like liner notes and the cover featured a price tag of $5.10 to represent Oakland’s 510 area code. Product labeling was designed to resemble old juke box song labels.

Series of original pencils for what would become Flogging Molly shirt designs featured in an earlier post.
The whale was later rejected due to concerns about portraying violence to animals. As a result I came up with the idea to do a traditional tattoo-style illustration of a whales fluke breaching the surface, featuring red blood drops and waves.
Obviously the band and I don’t condone the hunting and killing of whales, however, pirates and life at sea play a part in Flogging Molly’s aesthetic which is the basis of these concepts.
