Can I say Maria isn't evil? She just wanted to regain her territory back after her coven was destroyed and taken over by another coven. She wanted revenge to get back what was hers, but of course people confuse her actions to her later coven mates (Lucy and Nettie) who wanted full on control and more territories. Maria only wanted her original home back, and I'm sure she continued to fight after the whites took over original Mexican land during the Mexican-American War
Hard Agree! ‼️💯
(Long Response Ahead)
I most definitely agree anon. I never saw María as inherently evil. She can’t be when her turn to violence and the way she is was fueled by violence being enacted onto her, having been surrounded by that kind of thing her whole life and watching her entire family be killed before her very eyes. She was pushed into that life. A traumatized 19 year old girl who most likely had to fight all her human life and now just lost everything she had and loved in her vampire life. I’d go crazy too. I’ve always been a very understanding person so I was never particularly harsh on María, even when I first discovered her existence and didn’t really know everything about her. She mostly intrigued me and that’s what made me dig deeper and look at all sides of her, especially considering she’s the only Mexican woman in the series.
I know it may seem easy to hate her but I never could.. not when I was able to empathize and relate to her. Even with the tiny bit of information that was given, it was still enough to try and infer things about her and also understand her character which is what she deserved, especially being a character of color being written by someone who is white and racist, and why wouldn’t I? Me being a poc it’s only right to give the characters like María a chance (that many other characters are graced with) and not pretend she doesn’t exist just because she wasn’t given enough or was portrayed in a bullshit way for a bullshit reason. It’s my job to make it right because no character deserves that and it’s not like anyone else is gonna do it.
I like your points that she wanted to regain her territory back because that’s absolutely correct. She’d been living in a family-like coven (like the Cullens) at the time before she lost it all, watching her family die right before her very eyes and losing her home, her place of security, all of her support. Of course she’d want to take it back from the people who stole it from her and from the system that allowed it to happen, why wouldn’t she? She’s the baddest bitch to ever exist! lol. Also, I’ve never thought of your second point but yeah, I guess she does tend to get confused with Nettie and Lucy whose motives were probably different. Also I’m sure it must have been hurtful, again, for María to have people she considered family to not only betray her, but leave her again in death. I know people like to portray María as someone who’s up for betrayal but María never actually betrayed anyone, I think it’s like what you said, people confusing her with Nettie and Lucy.
The only time María was ever a danger to anyone, was when they posed danger to her first. After learning of Nettie and Lucy’s betrayal and then coming to blows with them, it makes sense that she really wasn’t that trusting of anyone after that, and when Jasper began pulling back due to his own problems, she thought he was going to do the same thing they did, she didn’t have anyone to warn her the way Jasper would have so she put her guard up and decided to plan. People paint her as evil for that but she isn’t, it makes sense coming from the world she’s lived in, her mindset, and what had just transpired with Nettie & Lucy. To be honest. I don’t think María ever wanted to kill Jasper. Otherwise she would have easily and quickly did so. Think about it. She had every opportunity. The odds were in her favor. She had the army, the skill, and the power. Jasper didn’t want to kill her either, in fact, I believe that was another one of his reasons for leaving. It said he was relieved he didn’t have to. He didn’t want to come to blows with her. Especially over what looked like a huge misunderstanding/miscommunication, which happens in life. I know people like to villanize her (and only her for some reason) for “wanting to kill him” but I think none of them are to blame because I don’t think they truly wanted to do that. I think they were just scared and on edge due to the circumstances around them. They were both subject to the same things and lived in a “kill or be killed” place. It’s what their mindsets were like but they obviously couldn’t bring themselves to do it. Something held them back. If they really didn’t care about the other they would have killed each other first chance they got and gotten it over with quickly. Either Jasper would have killed María and took over her army or left, Or María would have killed Jasper and went back to commanding her army, but they didn’t do that, and Jasper left because he really didn’t want to do that, and was relieved that he didn’t have to by leaving. Even though they both had many chances over those last couple of years to do it, they couldn’t bring themselves to do it. To me, that says a lot about the kind of bond they formed.
What also says a lot about the kind of bond they formed is the fact that even after all that… they still remain cool to this day. In the present Jasper asks Peter and Charlotte to tell María he wishes her well. It’s such a small message and it’s not even likely that Peter and Charlotte will run into María, but it was important enough for Jasper to mention and ask them to pass on anyway, that says a lot to me. It also says a lot that he thinks of calling and asking her for help in Eclipse with Victoria. The fact that he even considered it makes me believe that he has some way of getting in touch with her on short notice and is willing to see and work with her again and that he believes she might agree to doing so. He also talks about her a lot when telling his story to Bella (which no one really asked for but he seemed eager to tell his story and talk about her for some reason) and when he talks about her he doesn’t seem hateful or disrespectful towards her. He bears no ill will towards her at all. I think this says a lot in how their relationship, their bond survived the cold, harsh war and how they weren’t unhealthily co-dependent. They were able to function and grew as people even when they were apart for all those years and when they saw each other again (when she looked him up in Calgary), things were okay and their relationship became better because they were no longer in the crazy, harsh war-like circumstances that clouded their judgement and feelings. They were on better terms. It’s almost like they can’t completely rid themselves of one another. Like they can’t let the other go completely. There’s still something there, and I find that fascinating when it comes to two people who are so freaking different and yet so similar and met by chance of fate and they both seemed to see something in the other and ended up changing each other’s lives.
I also agree with the Mexican-American war point as well. I think after “the whites” (lol) took over during the war she had to continue fighting to keep her place on her own ancestral lands. She had to adapt to where she was if she was living there. She wasn’t in a position to lie down and let others take over everything that belonged to her. I think a lot of people tend to forget that María was most likely born and raised around war, it’s probably shaped a big chunk of her life and mindset. I think that this is one of the few things she and Jasper relate to each other deeply about.
Do I think she’s perfect?, No absolutely not lol. María is definitely flawed, but that’s what makes her realistic, (although some things written about her don’t add up so I do tend to discard that and call it out for its bs) I don’t care for making María ~perfect~ and giving her every single positive attribute/skill available in the world like certain other people do for certain white characters. I find that boring and unoriginal, and it would make no sense for her to be perfectly fine and healthy after everything’s she’s been through. She’s gonna have some issues, and that’s okay. It’s what makes her relatable, but it most certainly doesn’t make her evil. I even joke about her problems sometimes yes, but I mostly care for giving her what she deserved the first time, and that’s understanding, compassion, more growth and more development outside of white people. She’s her own person which is why I’m not down for comparing her to other characters, especially white characters, when she isn’t like any other character, no comparison needed.

I'm just gonna say it. Twilight should have been about Jasper healing from the trauma of that lady who turned him and had him train like vampire armies or whatever. Like that I would read. He must have struggled with so much guilt and pain and probably felt hella betrayed by his creator lady.
think it could’ve been an interesting thread to explore for jasper, purely from a writing standpoint, but i don’t know about a full book about it. also, he wasn’t completely blameless. he was a grown man, he made decisions, and the very fact that he left maria eventually is proof of that. and did maria actually betray him?

Like, why are there that many zombie movies anyway? 'Cause if it's supposed to, like, draw a parallel about leprosy, my cousin had leprosy, ok it's not funny, you know? And, like, is it supposed to be a metaphor for consumerism?

OK GUYS.
Since I've experienced many headaches trying to find ALL THE TWILIGHT FONTS I'm here to give you a complete master rundown of all the fonts used in the Twilight books (those that I own at least) as far as I know.
SO.
1. The Twilight Title Font - Zephyr
This font is used for the titles (no caps) of all the main series books, including Midnight Sun (it is not used for Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined). It is also used in The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Guide, for the all-red divider pages within sections (Ex. "Covens") and as the font for the Coven Headers and character homes headers (Ex. The Volturi, and The Volturi Lair). This is the easiest font to identify that is used in the series.
2. Character Handwriting Fonts
All of the character's handwriting fonts are ridiculously easy to find and here they are:
1. Bella's - Pablo
2. Edward's - Carmilla
3. Alice's - Joe Hand
4. Jacob's - "Almagro"
5. Charlie's - Asa
6. Aro's - Lucida Blackletter
3. Body Text
Here's where my deep dive required a LOT MORE DETECTIVE WORK.
1. Easier to find was the body font for the main series books: American Garamond BT. Most important distinction here from standard Garamond is the style of the number characters.
2. Requiring old fashioned elbow grease was the body text font for Midnight Sun: Sabon. I identified this by the italics.
4. Chapter Title Fonts
WHO WOULD HAVE GUESSED that this would be the biggest headache in the whole venture?
Midnight Sun was fairly easy, since I'm fairly certain the title font for that is a bog standard Arial. Nothing distinguishing, very easy.
THE MAIN SERIES, ON THE OTHER HAND I'm still not certain i have nailed down, but after a whole week of searching the closest I've come is to pop in "News Cycle" and scale up to 150%.
So there you go everyone. all the fonts. If i missed one that you might need identified for any fanfiction related reason, do please send me a snap of the font in the book and i will try and track it down.
