You would have a point here, except for the fact that ART IS ALREADY ACCESSIBLE. for everybody, of any disability.

Generated AI "art" is NOT art! If you create fanart using AI, you are not an artist, because you are not making anything. You are using a machine which steals from and harms actual artists.

I won't go into the environmental issues because frankly, I don't know enough about it, and honestly although I am very anti-AI (obviously) I think most people who cite environmental issues as a reason against AI also eat meat, and drive cars, and use other devices which do the same thing.

What I WILL go into however is the ethical issues surrounding AI. Generative AI like ChatGPT or C.AI is trained on data from real artists. artists who did not consent to their works being stolen and used for this.

Many AI advocates attempt to claim that because this work has been posted online it's part of the public domain and therefore totally ethical to use! however although this means it's legal, that doesn't make it ethical. legality should not be used as a guide to morality. Besides, even if this were true the owners of generative AI websites and apps disregard copyright laws completely- OpenAI admits it's "impossible to train generative AI without copyrighted materials"

These business owners steal from artists without their consent to line their own pockets.

If you use generative AI in fandom spaces I think you misunderstand the very purpose of fandom itself- fanworks are intended to be a gift of shared love and passion from one fan to another. Using the plagiarizing machine to spit out a warped mimicry of these fanworks is not art and should not be treated as such.

How? How is my demand of asking people to not use generative AI in fandom spaces "ridiculous" and, as you put in the tags, "ableist"? I am not shutting anybody out of fandom because everybody has the ability to create art without using AI.

My friend with cerebral palsy can't use his hands to draw or write very well, so he writes fanfiction on his laptop. My friend who has shaky hands (due to a bone condition in her wrists) creates art online by using a smooth line effect. I'm disabled myself! Do I let that stop me? No! I may not be able to do traditional art, but art comes in many forms- drawing, music, poetry, stitching, collages.

Humans have been creating art since the dawn of time (I mean, just look at cave paintings) and to suggest that the only way disabled people can contribute to fandom is by typing "generate me an image of Hunter from TOH!!" into a program that harms both the environment and fandom itself is much more ableist than anything in my post.

Fandom survived before generative AI, and that AI is not making fandom more "accessible" for anybody, because fandom has always been accessible.
