endwalker spoilers, thoughts on wol (versai) & zenos.
so zenos isn’t wrong.
versai was raised in the dotharl ways. violence is something he lives and breathes. he craves battle. craves that spark that sets his heart hammering, that reminds him he’s alive. he could never settle into a peaceful life, he was born for combat. as a child he was well known for his ferocity. and while he had a set of rules he lived by, a code he honored, he still fought for the joy of it.
which is why, exhausted and at his wits end, he doesn’t refuse zenos’ challenge. in his eyes dying at zenos’ hand after saving the universe wouldn’t be such a bad way to go. zenos does understand him in a way no one else does, and he’s aware that makes them both pitiable creatures.
after all, he could very well have walked zenos’ path if he had nothing left to live for. the echo, gave him insight and tempered his violence. the scions gave him family and purpose where there had once been a yawning void. dedicating his life to fighting zenos the same way zenos dedicated his life to fighting him, just to get that spark back.

hythlodaeus: put this on to avoid suspecion
versai: somehow suspects that being an enormous purple horny lizard man is going to arouse more suspicion than being half naked. does not

i feel like the npcs all get exactly one (1) conversation where versai matches their idea of a hero of light. some noble hero to shield them from the worlds evils and bring them through their darkest of nights.
and then they’re like with him in ul’dah and watch him get so frustrated with its circular pathways that he just jumps STRAIGHT DOWN from the chamber of rule to the first floor, cast healing waltz to fix his shattered kneecaps, and walk off.
or they watch someone fool him with the most obvious of lies. or watch him go do six thousand fetch quests, constantly getting distracted from the task at hand.
or they realize that alphinaud is actually the brains and the one arranging for all these wonderful things and he’s just kind of the brawn who gets excited at the chance to fight primals and will tell them straight up that dying by the hand of a INSERT FOE HERE would be such a glorious way to die because he has no illusions about the way his life will end because of how hard he lives it
and theyre like
oh oh no you’re really just like that
yeah okay this sure is our savior lets hope the bards edit this part out
and then the ones that maintain that crush are in too deep and they should be pitied.

misc au ra headcanons:
- they have humid huts to help during shed season. stuck shed itches and repeated poor sheds can be extremely hazardous to their health. - they can go weeks without food if they need to, so long as they don’t have to move much and can rest. - they’re descended from both dragons and demons. the lack of definitive answer on what they were descended from is because when you mix that + elezen it becomes whole confusing mess of genetics. - the demon part of them makes them great in bed and also fertile as hell. - they run very, very hot and so can wear little in frigid temperature. - they like sunning. - sometimes they need to shave extra keratin buildups off their scales. these can grow on their elbows, knees, heads, and along their backs. - pointy teeth - their scales are incredibly durable and are a form of natural light armor. - they raise children communally. - they can make distressed lizard noises
misc versai specific headcanons - he fucking hates ishgard bc there’s no good rocks to sun on :’( - he’s got significant scarring on his scales from all the fighting he’s had to do against the primals. - he scrapes his horns against shit to keep them sharp. - he’s accustomed to showing affection by bumping/scraping horns with other xaela and like doesn’t totally know how to show affection to other groups. sometimes he forgets and then some poor elezen is getting an ear full of horn. - he settles for rubbing the squishy part of his face against other people’s faces as a middleground. - after his time on the first he ends up developing a second set of horns and long long long claws due to the aether in his body being out of wack.

@drachenblood
they’re taking a break from the journey for now. holed up in a hot spring - something he, frankly, needs in order to get through this shed. he scratches at the scales at his cheeks, nose wrinkling when shed flakes away with it.
he catches the dragoon staring. whether it’s because this is a social faux paus he doesn’t know (which happens all too often) or because the ishgardians always seem off foot when faced with his more... draconian features. xaela were rare in eorzea and so being stared at is nothing new, but...
“does it bother you?”

in a non-wol verse, versai just decides to tag along with the WoL because they beat him in a fight and he’s decided that makes them best friends.

i need to sleep but tl;dr
versai’s character is pretty stagnant throughout arr and well into heavensward. it really isn’t until the patch content that he stops being PUNCH FIRST QUESTION LATER THIS WOULD BE A GLORIOUS DEATH and isn’t well into shadowbringers that he, like, chills out half a goddamn minute.
because, frankly - he doesn’t think he’s special. not in a self-deprecating way, but in a way where he just assumes anyone can do what he does if they decide that’s the path they want to walk. others have the echo. he just thinks he’s better honed from fighting and living life the dotharl way. for so long people point him at the enemy and he kills it, usually alone, and that leads to an inflated ego and a streak of recklessness. he feels invincible.
and then the people around him aren’t.
haurchefant and ysayle dying hit hard. the cracks start to appear when papalymo sacrifices himself and he finds out yda, carefree and silly yda, is actually someone else.
it isn’t until zenos smashes him into the ground that he has his little wakeup about what strength means. the battle is exhilarating but he sees a void in zenos’ eyes that terrifies him.
stormblood has him meeting people who have been crushed by the world and using violence as their means to correct it, and that’s another rude wakeup call. you can’t turn yourself into living weapon, point yourself at every problem and slaughter it, and expect that the world you made with that might is somehow peaceful in the process.
so you have this battle hungry, blood thirsty warrior who has suddenly realized that way is flawed. i imagine talking with sadu and hearing her say that the dotharl way of living isn’t sustainable probably shook him and is something he reflected on during nights when sleep eluded him.
finding out he’s azem would:
a) be kind of a crisis of faith. because he’s putting together just enough to figure out that means he’s his own god. where once he’d take it as confirmation that he is the best after all, now he’s realized people pray to gods for salvation and that weight is heavy. what do you do with that? who is he supposed to pray to now when all hope seems lost? himself?
b) also make him suddenly value his own life more than he has, because he has the power to change things and no one else does. up until shadowbringers he’s not the only one with the power to save the world. then he is. and that is a suffocating weight.
he’s still reckless and cares little for diplomacy. but he’s more careful and pragmatic. quieter too. less likely to rush in first, aggroing everything in sight with the intent on slaughtering it, he actually falls into the role he should in a party and weighs in on things as they pass him by. he forces himself to look beyond the immediate and the base needs to eat, sleep, fuck and fight. because if he doesn’t, he’s just a force to be used to further someone else’s plans. a beast that craves causing pain just to feel something.
just like zenos.
