Just saw an ad for fucking Kellog's cornflakes wherein a shirtless blindfolded man tied to a bed is like "Wait.. are you... eating??" and it pans across the bed to reveal that his partner is, indeed, too distracted to have sex with him bc she is chowing down on corn flakes. Now I've been caught up in wondering whether:

a) John Harvey Kellog would despise this ad; the mere proximity of bondage-play to his brand name and beloved anti-porn flakes is unforgivable

b) John Harvey Kellog would enjoy this ad, because it shows a young woman forsaking the temptations of the flesh in favour of eating a wholesome and nourishing bowl of cornflakes

hate when people think the only archetype possible for a male sidekick to a female protagonist is a soft boi and/or himbo. like the implication there is that the only reason a man would ever defer to a woman’s authority is if he was a bumbling idiot. love male supporting characters who are smart and strong and confident and can step up when necessary but still kind and humble enough to let someone else take the lead most of the time

Making my way through the Night Watch Discworld books. I really love that these books feature a character that would probably be the protagonist of like, any other series.

He's tall and muscular and good looking, he's genuinely kind and caring. He has a strong sense of justice, of right and wrong, and his moral compass does not allow him to put his own selfish needs above the needs of the many. He's probably the long lost king but let's just all pretend we don't know that.

And he's like, freaking terrifying. So many characters are just constantly freaked out by him.

Here's like "Hello there I'm Captain Carrot, I will do what is right even when it goes directly against my own benefit, or the benefit of those I love. My moral fibre is not tested by adversity and I will react with logic over emotion to the present danger, even when the threat is extremely personal."

And everyone stares at him like he's an eldritch monstrosity.

I want to share something I've learned on Bluesky that's forced me to change how I think about helping the victims of Israel's genocide in Gaza.

As it turns out, the answer is: you give money to human traffickers, which they will use to enslave even more people and put them to work mass-producing scams.

As Rahaeli notes later in her thread, there are genuine Gazans asking for help on social media. There are also some of the most evil people in the world doing their absolute best to look like Gazans. That's part of what makes them so evil - their goal is to impersonate victims of genocide, steal money intended for victims of genocide, and use that money to buy slaves that they put to work stealing even more.

This fucking sucks.

I'm not going to tell anyone else how to handle this. I will say that my personal choice is that I'll donate to established nonprofits working on the ground in Gaza. Unlike me, these nonprofits can guarantee they're serving real Gazans. Unlike me, they also have lawyers who can ensure they don't run afoul of laws or sanctions (where ignorance isn't a valid legal defense). Here are some of the organizations I've personally given to:

Doctors Without Borders

Women for Women International

Palestine Children's Relief Fund

Give Directly (which doesn't currently operate in Palestine, but I'm including them because they're one of the biggest and highest-impact cash transfer programs serving people who live on less than $2 a day, including refugees)

Again, I'm not telling anyone what to do. You answer to your conscience, not to me. But learning about the scam-center ecosystem and the horrific human rights abuses they perpetrate has forced me to rethink my own approach. Whatever you decide to do, please inform yourself as best you can before doing it.
