On The Square - Meaning - Mac deMarco

On the Square is a freemasonry term that means ready to build on. A foundation that is steady. See: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/on_the_square - This is not conspiracy review spoiler alert. So this faceless unshaped clay personality goes on stage to please an audience of one. He dips his face into a bowl of white liquid. The audience becomes excited making these monster noises then we see the monsters underneath. Three. A pig with the freemasonry compass-ish ruler. A cat building a triangle with bricks and a tentacle monster building a foundation.  These characters represent the people that taught and or mentored Mac. These people are symbolized as monsters because these people understand how human psychology works how to build something beautiful that will ultimately satisfy the inner most primal (animalistic) instincts of human beings. When Mac looks down and sees what they have to do to get him to that level he feels a sort of awe and sadness because they are doing all that for him. While they look up and give him a look like they got his back. The reason that the audience sounds like monsters is because the art is only a representation of themselves so the monsters behind Mac that make the people clap are the same monsters that understand what makes them tick. The monster is inside youuuuuu (echo, echo echo). The monsters at the same time feel bittersweet because their turn to shine is over so they stand behind Mac in order to let him rise. Live a life that isn’t there - Mac didn’t know that life could have been there but his “brothers” helped him square it up. They built it. Ideas?

eye of the storm - going into the unknown.

When I was younger I remember walking in jungle-e areas that had lots of rocks and plants and so on. I always wondered how it was that my feet would somehow always figure out how to step onto the next set of stones or high grass - I had no idea how my feet would figure it out however I knew if I just pushed my self forward it would work. Somehow I would always find the right stone or way to position my feet and all this would happen automatically. This intuition has always been there for me in anything, I’ve always had confidence going into the unknown. As I’ve gotten older and look ahead, worry about the future, bills and so on, I felt like I started getting worried about the future more. Not too long ago I decided to take my path into my own hands start creating  my own content instead of creating content for others. Writing, recording and producing my own songs. Being my own boss 100%. This came also as a result of leaving my previous band - “Paper Parachutes” We came to an agreement that this wasn’t working for either of us (there’s more to it, but I’m not going to get into it). And so I embarked into a journey of writing my own songs and recording them etc. This song is a reflection of the same feeling I had when I was that young of not knowing how my body will achieve something but having the guts to go ahead and do it and figure it out along the way. The eye of the storm represents the unknown and how I’m going into it but I know that the unknown has served me kindly and well over the years so even though it is scary at first I know whatever comes from it I will use for my own good, whether good or bad in order to learn.  I think this ties in with Hermetic ideas of using alchemy to transform something seemingly bad into something good. It is the aspect of yourself that you can use to re-imagine something you think is negative and turn it into something positive. Changing your own perception of something.
