MARLI, LYRA & NEW MUSIC FRIDAY
New Post has been published on https://tileyardeducation.co.uk/marli-lyra-new-music-friday/
MARLI, LYRA & NEW MUSIC FRIDAY
“Marli Harwood has had a long career as a top 40 radio artist, with 6 deals and 7 albums, she signed to Island Records at the age of 19. However, her focus now is collaborating and writing for others. She’s had remarkable success as a songwriter, her releases include “Stole The Show” by Kygo feat. Parson James (Sony), “I Really Like You (Pretender)” by All City Steppers (Flight Master), “All We Have Is Forgiveness” by Sondr feat. Joe Cleere (Ultra), “Love Won’t Let Me Go” by Julian Peretta (Sony) and “Aqualung” by Miss Li (Sony). Marli is also part of the Tileyard Education team delivering tutoring, masterclasses and mentorship to MA Commercial Songwriting and Production students.
Most recently, Marli gained notable success on a co-write with artist Lyra on the track ‘Falling’ that made its way onto New Music Friday playlist on Spotify after it’s release! We caught up with Marli to ask her about the track, and how the collaboration came to be. Marli said:
“We got on straight away, I’d seen her play live, and she is just an absolute superstar.”
She also said:
“The collaboration worked because sometimes things just come when you have a free channel, when there is an organic”
This was the first time the pair had written a song together. The versus had been constructed, but no one was happy with the chorus. After one day together in the studio, the 2 had created something everyone was delighted with. Marli said one of the things that helps her with the creative process is
“Visualising the video of the track, and drawing inspiration from that”
She said the two had a fantastic working creative energy, and the future holds many more writing sessions for this complimentary creative duo.
You can find out more about Lyra here and more on Marli here.”

James Lewis Signs To Tileyard Music
Embedded in the largest pro-music community in Europe, with a multitude of industry-partnerships, Tileyard Education’s students and alumni have encountered many useful offerings from this thriving eco-system of successful & creative businesses. One of Tileyard Education’s most notable partners is of course, is Tileyard Music.
Tileyard Music is Tileyard’s own Publishing & Management company, with over 1000 songs on their catalogue. They manage artists such as Sigala, Ella Eyre and Tiggs Da Author, as well as having an array of talented songwriters and producers on their books. Tileyard Music work closely with Tileyard Education, with assistance and A&R feedback on student writing camps, they’re always on the look-out for emerging talent. This is why Tileyard Education is delighted to announce the newest producer just signed to Tileyard Music’s roster is Tileyard Education graduate James Lewis.
James Lewis came to Tileyard Education to study MA Commercial Songwriting & Production to accelerate his career as a producer. We asked James what made him choose Tileyard Education as a place to study for his masters, he was pretty clear in saying;
“Why would I study anywhere else? It’s hard enough getting A&R teams to listen to your work, and here I had Michael Harwood as a mentor in Term 3, I had a weekly excuse to put another track in front of him, you don’t get that at any other university.”
James has now been a part of a number of writing camps with Tileyard Music since August last year. He has written with a multitude of established producers and songwriters, and now he is officially signed to the publishing leg of the company, we are anticipating the news of many more exciting projects. Congratulations James!

TILEYARD ED IN CONVERSATION WITH DON LETTS

TILEYARD ED IN CONVERSATION WITH DON LETTS
We are delighted to be hosting an evening in conversation with music industry legend Don Letts. For a single night, we’ll be discussing Don’s expansive career across multiple projects and taking questions from the audience on the night.
Don Letts’ reputation has been firmly established in both the film and music world by a substantial body of work from the late 70’s through the 80’s, 90’s and well into the millennium. His work has been exhibited in The Kitchen N.Y.C, The Institute of Contemporary Art, The N.F.T in London and was honoured at Brooklyn’s BAM festival and The Milan Film festival. In March 2003 he won a Grammy for his documentary ‘Westway To The World’.
He came to notoriety in the late 70’s as the DJ that single-handedly turned a whole generation of punks onto reggae. It was whilst as a d.j at the first punk club ‘The Roxy’ in 1977, that Don adopted the punk D.I.Y ethic and begun to make his first film ‘The Punk Rock Movie’. Shot on Super-8mm it is the only documentary on the U.K punk scene w/ Sex Pistols-The Clash and many others. This led to a period directing over 300 music videos for an eclectic mix of diverse artists ranging from Public Image to Bob Marley. He then moved into documentary work covering the likes of Gil Scot-Heron, The Jam, Sun Ra, George Clinton and most recently Paul McCartney. Dancehall Queen (co-directed by Rick Elgood) shot in location in Jamaica 1997 was his first feature film.
At the end of 2007 Don presented ‘Speakers Corner’ in conjunction with the British Arts Council. Featuring several spoken word artists, poets and rappers with a musical band in a theatrical setting. The event toured the UK in November-December and was a contemporary response to the 200th anniversary of the abolition of the British slave trade.
Tickets for this event are strictly limited so we recommend buying before we sell out! TICKETS HERE.

CATCHING 5 MILLION STREAMS
New Post has been published on https://tileyardeducation.co.uk/catching-5-million-streams/
CATCHING 5 MILLION STREAMS
We caught up with emerging artist Catching Cairo to see what’s been happening for her since graduating from her Masters at Tileyard Education back in 2018. Catching Cairo (previously known as Tiffani Juno), has barely had a moment of stillness, with offers coming in for creative collaborations regularly, she barely has the time to take-up every offer.
Catching Cairo is North-London based DreameR&B artist, she describes this genre as;
“a subgenre that encapsulates elements of a stylistic, lyrical, contextual approach to music, to create my unique sound through using elements of R&B, Soul, bass and reggae”
Before her solo artistry, she began making waves on the dance music circuit, songwriting and collaborating with many artists and scoring notable releases on Indie Labels Rinse, Maison Kitsune, Chase And Status’ label MTA and SHY FX’s Digital Soundboy.
Wasting no time, shortly after completing her Masters, Catching Cairo became part of a project with 9 other young women curated by Sian Anderson (1xtra) in collaboration with Warner Music and the Mayor Of London. The project ‘Nexxt Steps‘ was created to celebrate 100 years that women have had the right to vote in the UK. Over the course of a series of weekends, the women created an EP with the theme #BehindEveryGreatCity, finishing in a showcase in XOYO back in November 2018.
Catching Cairo has also enjoyed some great success on her collaborations, she featured on ‘Supernova’, a release with Hybrid Minds, and in just 5 months the track has hit over 623,000 streams on Spotify. In fact, between both her Spotify accounts, she has accumulated over 5 million streams! Catching Cairo is also being managed by Adam Nash at Wave Divergence Management, and she assured us that she has some “promising collaborations on the horizon”.
We asked Tiff what’s the biggest thing she’s learnt over the past year, she said;
“I’ve learned so much, I’ve learned I needed to push myself. I can get the things I want but I have to put the work in.”
We feel 2019 is going to be a very important year for Catching Cairo. You can ‘catch’ Catching Cario if you were lucky enough to get tickets to the sold-out show with Hybrid Minds at XOYO on Feb 8, or follow her on Instagram for updates on her upcoming shows.

ELEVNS - LONDON - NEW YORK - LA
New Post has been published on https://tileyardeducation.co.uk/elevns-london-new-york-la/
ELEVNS - LONDON - NEW YORK - LA
ELEVNS is an electronic and beatmaker duo made and based in London. Forming in 2016, the electronic inspired-duo showcased themselves at their first ever headline show in Rockwood Music Hall, New York in 2017.
ELEVNS has become a name buzzing around everybody’s lips, especially at Tileyard. The band have already been endorsed by ROLI (London-based music tech-company) after their trip to NY in 2017 and have also become part of the Soundbrenner family who specialises in portable, wearable metronomes. The duo even created their own label Deja-New Records in 2016. The concept of the label is to sign music that can:
“Induce listeners into remembering about a good feeling while discovering new music.”
The concept for ELEVNS is simple but strikingly powerful. The line-up of consists of just two musicians Aurélien and Gramm, but they invite an array of talented and feature singers and rappers to join them in recordings and on stage. Their music crosses boundaries, drawing inspiration fro Hip-hop, soultronic, pop and contemporary R&B. Gramm, also known as Stefan Gramunt, is part of Tileyard Education alumni, completing his masters in MA Commercial Songwriting and Production last year. Aurélien is a current student of the MA Commercial Music Producer programme.
So Tileyard Education was thrilled to hear the news that ELEVNS have been invited out to LA this week to play a show as part of NAMM 2019. The booking came about after Aurélien met Ilana Lorraine back in October during her visit to Tileyard for a guest lecture. Ilana, who is an artist Ambassador for Harman International, Waves Audio & ROLI, got talking to Aurélien and within a few months had them booked onto a showcase at the world-renowned venue, Shoreditch House and then invited the boys to LA. ELEVNS will be performing tonight as part of the NAMM show to their first ever LA audience.
The band have had a busy 2018 and Aurélien most recently composed the music for the fashion brand Uniqlo’s new film. The film is being played in every Uniqlo store worldwide to showcase a new range, and you can watch it here.
And as if that wasn’t enough excitement, the boys will be releasing their single ‘Let Me In’ (Feat SYON) on 8 Feb with AWAL, and will be dropping their first ever EP in March. You can also check them out at the 229 in London on 31 Jan, tickets still available here.
Keep your eyes on ELEVNS, 2019 is going to be a defining year for the band, and we’re anticipating big things.

FRANZISKA AND TALENTBANQ
New Post has been published on https://tileyardeducation.co.uk/franziska-and-talentbanq/
FRANZISKA AND TALENTBANQ
Tileyard London is an exciting and prosperous place to be, with new and established businesses joining the community regularly, the popularity for joining the Tileyard postcode is growing, with up to a 6-month waiting list for space. With clients such as Marathon Artists, Notting Hill Music, The Prodigy and Platoon it’s no wonder this thriving community welcomes in some of the best new start-ups in the business. One company that Tileyard Education has grown close alliances with is Talentbanq.
Talentbanq represents a carefully curated selection of the UK’s best independent artists to deliver outstanding live performances and have branched out to start managing artists too. The company was founded by CEO Ray Jones, Former Director of the Union Chapel, and Business Development Director at Time Out UK and Pablo Ettinger as Chairman, who is one of the founding team behind Caffè Nero and now manages their music department.
Talentbanq moved into Tileyard at the very moment they were ready to launch their exciting venture. Their business has gone from strength to strength, with a demand for good live talent, they now have over 70 artists on their roster! Their team is also expanding fast, with an Events Manager and Development Manager now also based at Tileyard.
So, in 2018, Tileyard Education was delighted when Ray Jones approached the university asking for help to recruit the company’s newest intern. After sharing the opportunity, Talentbanq chose MA Music Business student, Franziska Uecker. Franziska moved to London to immerse herself in the music industry networks here, she graduated from the University of West London with a First Class Honours in Music Technology in 2018. From there, she decided she wanted to learn more about the business of music and chose to do her Masters with Tileyard Education.
She has been working with the Talentbanq team for 2 months now and is getting to apply herself to the live industry in multiple ways. She has been assisting the team with social media, booking, helping with their roster, and will be helping the team with their exciting and newest development – ‘Live At The Camden Chapel’, a 40 cap intimate venue, that launched this month. This intimate space will serve as a listening venue for independent artists and will allow artists to be paid for their performances.
We asked Franziska what has been the best thing she’s learnt so far;
“So much, I get to do new things every day.”
We also asked Franziska how she is finding her time at Tileyard:
“I love it here, I really do, there are so many opportunities to network.”
Franziska’s internship with Talentbanq has now ended as she will be turning her focus and attention onto her Masters. But we know she’s gained valuable insight with the team and look forward to catching up with her and Talentbanq later this year.

WATCH OUT FOR MAKI FLOW
New Post has been published on https://tileyardeducation.co.uk/watch-out-for-maki-flow/
WATCH OUT FOR MAKI FLOW
Francesca Di Basi, or Maki Flow as you will know her, is an artist by heart and an artist by nature. Her tagline “I write and sing my heart out” can be found on ever bio page she’s ever written.
Maki Flow came to London from Rome in October of 2018 to further develop and grow what is already, quite an established musical career. After successfully enrolling onto MA Commercial Songwriting and Production at Tileyard Education, she relocated to her new North London home. She says London is the place for her, she finds romantic tones of gesture on the “busy streets”.
Maki Flow crosses boundaries and genres, with some of her biggest influences being drawn from an eclectic mix of genres, including R&B, acoustic and dance. To her, good music is music that can provoke emotion, and have the ability to carry you away.
In Italy, Maki was already gaining recognition for her songwriting and artistry, with particular success in the EDM genre. She’s worked with Nightvision Records (Warner) in the Netherlands, and her first collaboration was in 2017, with 2 Italian Producers working with Casual Jam, an EDM label. In fact, she’s also collaborating on 2 more tracks with 2 more dance producers, which she is looking to release this year.
But most recently, Maki Flow gained major recognition on Spotify, after releasing the track “Teenage Love” with a duo called Wallaby on 28 Dec. The track reached over 100k streams in just one week and was featured on over 15 playlists including ‘New Music Friday’ in Canada, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Thailand, Iceland and many more! Maki said;
“The song is about being insanely in love, the kind of love that shakes your knees and blows your mind, that kind of love that can turn back the hands of time and can make you feel like a teenager again: invincible, free and safe.”
Teenage Love has also been added on The Vibe Guide and Sensual Musique channels’ on Youtube and reached respectively 77k and 27k views in one week.
We asked Maki what her goal is, and what she hopes to achieve out of the next year of her study at Tileyard. She said;
“I see myself as an artist, but I’m also a songwriter, my goal is to get a publishing deal”.
We feel very excited about Maki Flow’s next year at Tileyard, she is definitely one to watch. You can listen to “Teenage Love” here.
