Scrapped Magical girl au pieces

So this is what i had, i think the designs are solid but i think i put too much pressure on myself to draw in van gogh’s style for the cards. I also think i didnt have a clear enough vision.

I think the styles and colors i chose wouldve looked good together but i think using so many different inspirations wouldve eventually gotten sloppy for me. Like i took inspiration from Romani culture for the clothing and the cards, and i took inspiration from a Dutch artist, and i was doin some shit with Spanish clowns too and the waters were getting so muddy and i lost track of who i was fighting for.

I was losing my way, but then i remembered one of the most important aspects of magical girl shows. The familiars.

So i made up the familiars with the bear sheep and coyote, then things got even more muddy because that combination is not very European. It’s more american. So i completely scrapped these designs and i started from scratch.

I made a Pinterest board for the new au just to get all my ideas straight before i jumped right into it (heres the Pinterest board i made for the magical girl au to try to salvage it but it didnt work)

Im really bummed that I ultimately went with a different aesthetic because i love the old one a whole lot. But i think it was for the best. I can always make a celestial au later

Tage to the rescue!! To answer the one person who asked if they would get to share the devil fruit power, hopefully this answers that :) only the first person who takes a bite of the fruit gets the power, so only Ace would drown in water.

So remember when I said this would be a 2 parter?? it’s now panning out to look a bit more like 3 or 4 parts maybe. Originally this was planned to be 10 pages but even with the hiatus I couldn’t finish coloring on time so you get the first half for now and the next half next week :) I think I have like,,, 35 tracked hours on this chapter now lmao

But since I’ve got lineart for the next half already done hopefully next week’s chapter will go quickly and I can build a small buffer and start to work on the week after. Do have some other AUs and thoughts in the works other than this comic but also internship has begun so it is back to the grind again until August

I will try my best to keep this updated weekly but depending on motivation and time I might have to start doing biweekly updates if I want to work on other art as well :/ but I’ll keep you guys posted! Thanks for your patience!!

I hope the banter came across as organic enough hhhhhhhhh I don’t really banter with my siblings too much haha. Constantly was just thinking about this with the second page:

We have maybe one or two more things to cover on Sixis that I have planned so we might be jumping around less from here. I’ve gotten a lot of questions on whether I’ll do the whole whitebeard situation and I Promise It’s Coming it’ll just be a while out

Something about the coloring this time! I don’t know how much people have noticed but I’ve been trying to use specific times of day for the main palettes of each of these comics! For this one the idea was sunset, when the sun is just barely visible over the horizon. I got to film the sunset over a beach at one point and it was gorgeous to me how one side of the sky was warm while the other had already fallen to night.

Especially since this comic deals so much with Tage’s secrets and the blurry line of what secrets he keeps intentionally vs. what secrets he doesn’t even know himself because of his amnesia i wanted there to be more dark blue in the sky. Eventually it settled on this sort of purplish blue that turned out kind of difficult to work with ^^;

Also! I finished reading the first part of the Ace novels! It’s such a time. Thinking now more about some of the clear differences between Deuce and Sabo that might be fun to explore in other comics :)

So this is about all the pages ive had doodled up by the time i posted the last chapter of this, so i think the other chapters are def gonna take longer to produce. But ive been little by little finishing up the line art of this post for the past like month or so, and then i absolutely blasted through all the coloring of this in one day.

And in the process of doing all that I kept thinking of more and more things to add, too so. Who knows when this will be over.

Oh well~ what’s another webcomic i start thinking it’ll be a little passion project that turns out to be a huge take on because my ass cant just make short shit.

epithets of the horae

Below is a list of epithets I’ve found relating to the Horae. The first part of this post will deal with epithets of the Horae as a whole, and the second with the epithets of the individual goddesses. You can find the masterpost for all of my Horae posts HERE.

It’s important to note that some of the writers using these epithets refer to the Horae as an appellative or as the “lowercase” seasons and not the “uppercase” Seasons. So in that way, they may not be talking about the Horae themselves and rather just the idea of the seasons, but I’m going to note them anyway. (This similarly applies to them with their individual epithets, especially Eirene).

THE HORAE

POLYGETHES - joyous, joy-giving, delightful; shared with Dionysos (Homer, Iliad 21; 450)

POLYANTHES - blossoming with flowers, rich in flowers, blooming ; possibly also ANTHEIA which is shared with Hera and Aphrodite (Pindar, Olympian 13; 17)

AEITHALES - evergreen, ever-blooming ; shared with the Kharites (Orphic Hymn 43 to The Horae)

PERIKYKLAS - revolving, encircling ; this deals with the idea of their never ceasing choral dance, which is a metaphor for the revolution of the constellations (Orphic Hymn 43 to The Horae)

EUTHRONOS - beautifully throned, with beautiful seat ; shared with Aphrodite (Pindar, Pythian 9; 60)

GLYKYPARTHENOS - sweet virgin, sweet maiden ; the use of parthenos here is more specific than the following epithet, pretty much describing all of the Horae as virgins (Meleager, Anth. Gr. 9.16)

HAGNOS - pure, chaste ; though sometimes associated with virginity (Artemis, Persephone in the way that she is Orphiclly described as a virgin) it is also describing divine purity and is shared in that way with Demeter, Apollo and Zeus (Orphic Hymn 43 to The Horae)

Also quoting directly from Theoi: “Men in different circumstances regard the course of time (or the seasons) either as rapid or as slow, and both epithets are accordingly applied to the Horae. (Theocr. xv. 104; Pind. Nem. iv. 34; Horat. (Carm. iv. 7. 8; Ov. Met. ii. 118.)” so it is appropriate to refer to them as both swift or relaxed as described in that list of sources. There are possibly more specific poetic-epithets that refer to them such as “swift-footed” is used for Achilles, but I have yet to find them if they are used.

DIKE

PARTHENOS - maiden, virgin ; shared with Artemis and Athena. though as above all the Horae are described as virgins/maidens, Dike is of her sisters specifically referred to as Parthenos (Aesch. Seven 659)

PANDERKES - all-seeing ; (Orphic Hymn 62 to Dike)

EUTHYS - unswerving, straight-minded, direct ; (Bacc. Ode 15; 54)

ALGAOMORPHOS - comely, of lovely form ; similar epithet shared with Aphrodite (Orphic Hymn 62 to Dike)

ASTRAEA - starry, of the stars ; this is the name of the goddess of the constellation Virgo who is commonly associated with Dike (Aratus, Phaenomena 96)

EUNOMIA

BATHYKOLPOS - deep-bosomed, also “with dress falling in deep folds” ; pretty much large-breasted (Orphic Hymn 60 to The Kharites)

RHODOKOLPOS - rosy-bosomed ; (Lyr. Adesp.140.)

SOTEIRA - savior, protector ; shared with her mother Themis (Pindar, Olympian 9; 15)

APOLEMOS - unwarlike, without war (peaceful) ; shared with Hesykhia who may also be Eirene [below] (Pindar, Pythian 5; 66)

EIRENE

THALLO - blooming, thriving, also “of green shoots” ; this is also the name of one of the Horae of a different triad (Hesiod, Theogony 902)

POLYOLBOS - rich (in blessings), most-abundant, wealthy ; shared with Aphrodite, the description of Peace as wealthy further connects her to the god Ploutos (Orphic Hymn 43 to The Horae)

BATHYKARPOS - rich in fruit, with many fruits ; (IG 3. ; 170)

HESYKHIA - of rest, quiet, stillness ; this is the name of the goddess of similar attributes who is described by Pindar to be Dike’s daughter (Dem. 5; 25)
