Cid talking his encounter with Dion
Maehiro Kazutoyo wrote the original story and screenplay in Japanese (cited in the credits of FF16 and FF16 Ultimania), so I want to share some of the nuances of the Japanese version to an English speaking audience. Key differences in bold.
JP->EN
Cid
The temple (with the mothercrystal heart)…it’s ahead of the bridge there
But it looks like they’re so short staffed that they haven’t repaired it (the hole in the wall)
Clive
You don’t mean…You made this? (referring to the hole in the wall)
Cid
Ya, last time I snuck in, I bumped into the Dominant of Bahamut right before the bridge
I was being chased, so I had no choice
Clive
I don’t know how you got away…
Cid
Let’s get this over with quickly
(after some combat)
Clive
Speaking of which, I heard that there’s a guardian that protects the temple of the crystal at Drake’s Head
Cid
I didn’t meet them the last time I snuck in
EN->JP
Cid
There. That’s our way into the inner sanctum.
You’d think they’d have patched that up by now. A sorry state the empire’s in.
Clive
Wait… You don’t mean…
Cid
Aye, my little game of hide and seek with Bahamut ended here–at tragic cost to this remarkable architecture.
Don’t blame me. He started it.
Clive
But how did you make it out alive?
Cid
I walked. You should try it.
(after some combat)
Clive
When I was in the imperial army, soldiers assigned to the Glass Gate would tell stories about something they called the Guardian.
Cid
Can’t say I saw anything like that when I was last here. Then again. I can’t say I made it this far.

Dion to Clive after Harpocrates' Quest
Maehiro Kazutoyo wrote the original story and screenplay in Japanese (cited in the credits of FF16 and FF16 Ultimania), so I want to share some of the nuances of the Japanese version to an English speaking audience. Key differences in bold.
JP->EN
About wanting to leave proof of my life…am I being a little too sentimental?
As thanks for bringing me to see my former mentor, please take this
…I am indebted to you/I feel grateful*
*恩に着る means to indebted be to, but it also carries a sense of being grateful
ーー
In Japanese, Dion implies that he leaves the wyvern tail with Harpocrates because he wants to leave evidence of his life (since Harpocrates likened Dion to the wild wyvern tail), which implies that Dion believes he will die.
EN->JP
Our roots do not define us…No wonder my stepmother didn’t like him.
For reuniting me with memories I had thought long lost.
I shall not forget this.

Harpocrates to Dion about the wyvern tail
Maehiro Kazutoyo wrote the original story and screenplay in Japanese (cited in the credits of FF16 and FF16 Ultimania), so I want to share some of the nuances of the Japanese version to an English speaking audience. Key differences in bold.
Harpocrates' thoughts on the wyvern is slightly different between Japanese and English. In Japanese, he emphasizes that, "Everything up until now has made you bloom into the person you are today," whereas he English, he emphasizes that, "But they do not define it…just as yours do not define you."
I think the Japanese idea is a very common piece a wisdom given to many young people in East Asian culture - the idea that one should embrace everything of one's past, even the sins. All our experiences make us who we are, and in Dion's case, good people can do bad things, and embracing that truth may help Dion be proud of the man he is.
JP->EN
…This is a wild Wyvern Tail
When Wyvern Tails are placed in a harsh environment, it causes it to bloom into a flower of a rare color
It is hard to believe its roots hold a deadly poison when it blooms into such a beautiful flower
Your Highness, you are like this flower
Everything up until now has made you bloom into the person you are today
No matter how much you are tormented by what people do/say, please, I hope you can be proud of yourself
To commemorate our meeting again, I’d like to give Your Highness this…if possible…
EN->JP
Because it is unique to those found in the wild. Something in the harsh environments in which they grow lends them this…striking hue.
Their roots are indistinguishable from those of their hothouse cousins--but once they bloom, the difference is immediately apparent.
In this flower, I see you, Your Highness.
Its roots were the roots of a wyvern tail, with all that implies. But they do not define it…just as yours do not define you.
I want you to have it–that it might remind you of this truth.

Clive + Joshua last words - PART 2
Maehiro Kazutoyo wrote the original story and screenplay in Japanese (cited in the credits of FF16 and FF16 Ultimania), so I want to share some of the nuances of the Japanese version to an English speaking audience. Key differences in bold. Joshua's dialogue in Japanese reveals that, "over half my body is petrified" :((((((
I always cry during this scene...
JP->EN
Clive
Joshua…!
Stop…do you want to die..?!
Joshua
It’s fine, brother…my body is mostly petrified
In any case, I can’t be saved
Clive
Stop…!
Joshua
Brother, you are my Shield
You will always protect me, won’t you?
Please…
My thoughts, and this world…
Thank you, Clive
For being my brother
EN->JP
Clive
No–! Joshua–!
Don’t— Don’t do it, you’ll—
Joshua
Enough, Clive…My body is too far gone.
If the wound does not take me the curse will.
Clive
No…
Joshua
I have always been proud…
…to call you my Shield.
But now…
It is the world that needs you…
Thank you, Clive.
For being my brother.

Clive + Joshua last words - PART 1
Joshua's explanation of the relationship between Ultima and Clive is very different between Japanese and English. Maehiro Kazutoyo wrote the original story and screenplay in Japanese (cited in the credits of FF16 and FF16 Ultimania), so I want to share some of the nuances of the Japanese version to an English speaking audience. Key differences in bold.
JP->EN
Joshua
The fires of Ifrit, which consume everything…
The fires of Phoenix, which restore life to everything...
I thought that with these two things, it would be Ultima…
But that’s not it…I know now…
Why he(Ultima) can’t use you as a vessel
Clive
That’s enough! Stop talking!
Joshua
Listen to me, Clive
As a god, Ultima gathered faith from the people he created…
That is to say…he is the recipient of wishes…of people’s thoughts…the being that people entrusted their thoughts/wishes to…
Clive
(surprise)
Joshua
That’s right… there are many thoughts/wishes swirling inside him(Ultima)...until a strong Ego is built up…
What terrible irony…To deny people’s Ego to that extent…He is the same as us…
And…brother, you have also been entrusted with so many thoughts.
The thoughts of Cid and his friends, of wanting to create “a place where people can live as human beings…”
The thoughts of the Rosfield family, of wanting to save as many people as possible…
The thoughts of Jill, of wanting to protect you at your side…
These thoughts…the stronger they are…
The stronger the person they are entrusted to becomes…
Brother and Ultima…you both have strong Egos…
Therefore, you can never melt together…!
So for that reason…I will also entrust my thoughts to you…
With this power…you will surpass him…!
If it’s you, brother, you can definitely defeat him…!
*想い - a concept that encompasses many meanings: thoughts, wishes, desires, feelings, even love and affection
Tumblr media
EN->JP
Joshua
The one possessed of the destructive flames of Ifrit…
And the healing flames of the Phoenix…
This I once believed would be Ultima’s true form.
But I was wrong.
I see it now…
Why you will never become Ultima’s vessel…
Clive
I don’t care! Just hold on!
Joshua
Listen to me, Clive.
You remember the murals? People once knew that Ultima was their god…That he created them…
And they worshiped him. Prayed to him. Looked to him for guidance.
In vain.
In vain…for he did not listen. Did not acknowledge our will. And so we strayed from his path to forge one of our own.
So absorbed was he in his own desires–
So driven by his own will alone–that he shunned the one thing that could have made him truly powerful.
Faith. The same faith people now place in you.
Faith that you will fulfill their dream, Cid’s dream, of creating a better world for us.
Faith that you will follow in Father’s footsteps, and save those who need saving most.
Faith that you will answer Jill’s plea…to save yourself.
The difference is, Clive, that you chose to listen. And that is what has steeled our bonds.
Bonds that helped you stand firm when Ultima’s pull was at its strongest.
His power may be absolute…
But so is ours…and so will yours be.
With my light in your heart…
…not even a god might stop us.
