Marine heat waves have killed off over 1,000 sq km of seagrass here since 2011. Seagrass forms the primary habitat and food for dugongs, turtles, and many fishes. Current climate models predict that these marine heat waves will only increase in frequency. This photo is part of an extraordinary special issue of this week’s New York Times Magazine devoted to a single story by Nathaniel Rich revealing the lost opportunity we had to limit the impacts of climate change. The ceramist/artist/GENIUS Gregg Moore took the bone charcoal from our grill and turned it into bone CHINA. Gregg said it was some of the whitest, strongest, and most translucent bone china he had seen. Not long after that, Gregg ran out of our bones, substituting bones from a local butcher shop. “But the bones wouldn’t make china,” he told me. Apparently, the grain-fed, conventional cow bones are so weak (from lack of exercise, diet deficiency, unhappiness...??) that they were worthless for china. So grass-fed doesn’t just mean better soil and better pasture and better meat; it means BETTER BONE CHINA. Crazy. The coral uniforms were designed by Parley Ocean Plastic in collaboration with Adidas, and imitates the color of different types of coral under threat from plastic pollution. Adidas has worked with nonprofit Parley for the Oceans since it first created trainers from retrieved ocean plastic in 2015. Every shoe is 95% plastic and made from 11 plastic bottles — and in 2016, it sold over a million pairs. Now, the partnership has expanded into hoodies, swimwear, trousers, and more, with high-profile partnerships making more noise than ever about the threat plastic poses to our oceans. Science is awesome. . #Repost @permaculture_with_soul ・・・ The bending of light, as measured by a refractometer in food substances, is scaled into a reading known as Brix. Brix is an indicator of how much dissolved solid is in the substance including sugars, amino acids, vitamins, minerals and plant hormones. In short it is an indicator of how strong and pest resistant a plant will be...and, importantly for us, how flavourful our food will be. Flavour then, vis a vis, is an indicator of how nutrition rich the food is. We all enjoy real tasting flavourful fruits and vegetables instead of the bland and insipid flavour it usually is from the supermarket. Well, now you know that flavour corresponds with the vitamin and mineral content of a food as the latter are locked up in the sugar/starch/cellulose complexes in the plant. When you are eating conventionally grown foods, laced with pesticides grown in nutritionally poor and dying soils, bred and artificially fed for size, water content for weight, robustness for global travel and picked unripe to survive the journey, is it any wonder these foods don’t taste that great? It’s no wonder we want to cook or process the little remaining vitality out of them and add fats, sugar, salt and spices to give us any taste satisfaction. But we aren’t getting any real nutritional satisfaction either. When you eat foods, particularly homegrown, in well built soils, free of poisonous influences, you taste the difference. You feel the difference inside of you if you pay attention. When you discover and experience this for yourself and realize that not only are you depriving your taste buds of any real adventure, but your body and brain of real nutrition too, you stop compromising on quality. We pump foods up on water for weight with artificial fertilizer salts for commerce...for profit...not for health. As Geoff Lawton said “If our food was valued by its refractive index and not by weight, how we all grew it would change very quickly across the planet.” Such practices don’t feed the soil so they can’t feed your plants, which in turn can’t feed you.
