Also, I swear that every time I make one of these I forget something. This time it was In the Vanishers’ Palace by Aliette de Bodard. It’s awesome, go read it.

42 books down, 10 to go! I’ve started filtering my books down to those under 300 pages since I’ve got to finish one every 3 days for the rest of the year and I am SO GLAD #smoketown by #teneadjohnson made the cut! It was weird but beautiful and I loved it ♥ . ⭐⭐⭐⭐ . In what we now think of as Appalachia, Leiodare is a jungle due to pharma companies destroying the climate. Twenty-five years ago, an epidemic hit Leiodare called ‘The Crumble,’ and even though the quarantine of the city has been lifted, it’s still not the same. Birds were blamed for the epidemic, and thus have been banned - with a sonic wall guarding the city and check-points at all entrances and exits. Anna is there awaiting her love’s return when she re-discovers her power to make drawings that come to life by drawing a pair of swans that become real. But did birds really cause The Crumble? . I loved reading this book. It had just enough world building and drew out all of the various groups and coping mechanisms for this society left behind after the epidemic. It’s filled with small details about the different neighborhoods and how they interact - there’s even an insect problem due to the lack of birds. There’s a wild twist in the middle that… I’m not sure how I feel about? But enjoyed this tale nonetheless. . #52booksin52weeks #LGBTQ #blackauthors #speculativefiction #nanotech #VirtualReality https://ift.tt/2R0t35N

A divergence from my usual genre, this week I read #TheFriend by #sigridnunez! I started it on Thursday - the same day it won the national book award! - and just wrapped it up today. It was a beautiful book about grief and loneliness and dogs… but left me looking to get back to my genres of choice 😉 . ⭐⭐⭐ . Since college a woman has been good friends with one of her younger writing professors. Despite him being a womanizer, they’ve remained platonic friends through three of his marriages. They meet up occasionally, but see each other at events and exchange letters and phone calls until he commits suicide. While grieving the loss of her friend, she get his 180 lb great dane to take care of - a dog that is also grieving. They grow close together and overcome the loss of their mutual friend. . This is the type of book I struggle to rate. It’s clearly a well-written, insightful book. I appreciated the look at a platonic adult relationship where both sides have opinions, feelings, and flaws. The portrayal of grief was touching, as was the look at our relationships with dogs. The character development was gorgeous in its simplicity. Yet, it’s not a book I enjoyed. I guess no book is written for every person, and this one just isn’t for me. . #grief #love #dogs #greatdane #friendship #writing https://ift.tt/2RYVeSM

Despite this 525 page book being filled with pain an agony… I sped through #childrenofbloodandbone by #tomiadeyemi once I really got into it - reading the VAST majority of it in 2 days! But so long to thick books for the rest of the year! It’s mid November and I’ve still got 12 books to read! . ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ . Zelie remembers her mother being taken from her in chains and murdered while the King’s guards beat her father while her and her brother hid. Her mother was a fierce maji - a reaper who was gifted control of the dead by the Gods - but when the magic was taken from the world by the King, he Al’s decreed that all Maji would be killed publicly as a reminder of magic’s evil. But Zelie knows the goodness of magic and the love of the community that was gifted magic by the gods… she only sees the evil of the noble family that destroyed her community. So when a defecting member of the royal family offers her a way to bring magic back to her country, she takes it knowing whatever the adventure brings is worth it. . Adeyemi ends with an author’s note. While many people - young and old - die gruesome deaths throughout this young adult novel, it was written from the pain of seeing the American black community shot down and killed or thrown in prison through systemic racism in our country. You can see the pain through the main character in the book who is ALWAYS afraid as her community is ripped apart over and over again and she is oppressed by those around her. One powerful part of the book is when someone who had been shielded from pain (like White folks in America) is gifted the power of feeling the emotions of others… and is blown away by the pain. the anger. the fear. that Zelie carries with her constantly. I appreciated the defecting Nobel who demonstrated that ALLY is a verb, not a noun and worked to understand and unlearn everything her family had taught her about magic. . #readdiversebooks #blackauthors #BlackLivesMatter #youngadult #maji #henryholtandcompany https://ift.tt/2PtIV47

I fell behind on posting #coreofthesun by #johannasinisalo - I finished it back on October 23, but needed to find peppers for this book’s photoshoot! . ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ . In a not-so-distant Finland, Vanna is struggling with an addiction to capsaicin - the stuff that makes peppers spicy. The authoritarian Finnish government has banned everything from drugs & alcohol to red meat & sugar with spiciness the most recent addition. They’ve also set rules that women exist for the benefit of men only, trained in cooking, cleaning, and keeping house from a young age. However, home schooled from a young age by her grandmother Vanna doesn’t fit in and must hide this from everyone–including her sister. . In a spicy version of Handmaid’s Tale, Core of the Sun was a great read. What it lacked in plot, it made up for with BEAUTIFUL descriptions of pepper flavors. This was my introduction into the genre of ‘Finnish Weird’ an I’ll be back despite my struggles trying to explain this book to others. #finnishweird #spicy #chilipepper #eloi #morlock #synesthesia #52booksin52weeks https://ift.tt/2yMKfEQ

I’m already a third of the way through my NEXT book so I gotta get #TheParkingLotAttendant by #NafkoteTamirat up before I fall behind again! . ⭐⭐ . A young woman in her teens struggles to find a parental figure in her life, so when she moves to Boston and stumbles upon a parking lot that not only is run by Ethiopians (like herself) but also with Ayale, the man in charge, who encourages her to read and do her homework it becomes a fixture in her life. Slowly, she discovers that Ayale might not be the good man she believed he was as deaths in the Ethiopian community start to pile up, he take an interest in politics back home, and she starts delivering mysterious packages. . I think I am missing something. I kept waiting for this book to start and then there was intrigue! Then I waited for resolution or answers…. but it was over. The writing style was good, and I enjoyed the portrayals of the characters and the way life at the parking lot was described. I would have liked more character growth, answers, or maybe to read this with a book club… . #52booksin52weeks #readdiversebooks #fathersanddaughters #teenagers https://ift.tt/2OF3470

I missed sharing a book! I finished this back in September (Book 35!) but I fell behind on my review (#oops) It was the third book in the #bintibook trilogy #bintinightmasquerade by #nnediokorafor I loved this trilogy and have been recommending it to .EVERYONE. . ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ . In the 3rd and final book of the trilogy, Binti is home and just learned of her heritage as one of the ‘desert people’ or Enyi Zinariya and had new and powerful communication skill awakened in her. As she struggles to reconcile her heritage, with her upbringing, and her Meduse side, she must work to keep conflict from arising between two groups she feels connected with. . I loved reading all three of the Binti books. The characters were wonderful. The world-building was beautiful. The growth of Binti as her identity changes and morphs was something everyone can relate to, though it seem to draw directly from the stories and experiences of those who are mixed race or mixed heritage. I’ve been recommending these book to everyone. They were a joy to read despite the sadness and conflict they hold. . #52booksin52weeks #goodreadschallenge #womenauthors #readdiversebook https://ift.tt/2A5Iq72

Book 36 is #anexcessmale by #maggieshenking! A wonderful book both taking a look at the results of China’s one child policy, while painting a beautiful picture of how all people are important - even those that may look like excess. . ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ . In a near future in China, in the aftermath of their One Child policy, there are several more men than women. Recently, the number of husbands each woman can have has been increased to three - and ‘Going to the max’ is generally seen as patriotic (though low class.) May-Ling is already married to brothers. One is 'Willfully Sterile’ and the other is likely a 'Lost Boy’ - both targets of the government if discovered. When Wei-Guo looks to join their family, things go sideways as they all learn what they want and need. . I appreciated all of he characters in this book. The narrative shifted between the 4 protagonists and gave a multi-faceted look at how each is perceived and how that compared to how they saw themselves. It was unique in they were all portrayed as basically good, if misunderstood. It wasn’t the book I thought I would be and it took me a minute to match my expectations, but once I did it was worth it. . #dystopia #harpervoyager #womenauthors https://ift.tt/2IRlWtc

Book 34 was Home by #nnediokorafor! In my 3 years of #52booksin52weeks I’ve never been this close to on schedule by the end of September - maybe i’ll even be able to surpass goal this year 🤞 . ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ . After her first year at Oozma Uni, Binti is struggling with who she is. She feels like she is broken, unclean. She gets permission to travel with Okwu back to her home. Her, the first of her tribe to leave, the first of his species to visit peacefully. Binti learns to become herself, not 100% Himba anymore through the challenges that come with her visit. . While not as engaging as the first book in the series I felt it was NECESSARY. Looking at identity through Binti’s lens was amazing, giving great insight to our own lives in pre-apocalyptic Earth. Particularly, looking at immigrants, refugees, and mixed-race backgrounds and the challenges and joys that must come with that. . #readdiversebooks #womenauthors #authorsofcolor #readriseresist #sciencefiction #post-apocalypitic https://ift.tt/2xKwKVF

Book 33 in #52booksin52weeks was #onlyeveryours by #louiseoneill - I wanted to love this biting satire of beauty standards, but I felt it only reiterated the standards women are held to without providing another option. But it was a quick read, and the great world building kept me hooked. . ⭐⭐ . Freida is in her 16th and final year at School, where all the eves learn to be good girls, appealing to others, and always agreeable. They are surrounded by mirrors, and taught that appereance is the only thing men value. You must be skinny, wear the best clothes, and always compare yourself to others because there is always room for improvement. But after the summer, her best friend, Isabel, pulls away leaving her to face the pressure of her final year alone. . In a handmaid’s tale meets the bachelor set up, I see that this is supposed to satirize the expectations set on women. But I felt instead it re-emphasized them. I would read chapters about how they need to eat less food to make sure they were under 115 lbs or they were obese and fat women should be made obsolete… and just feel bad about myself. There were frequent references to how pale, porcelain skin was most important and how those with darker skin were consistently recommend skin whiteners. I kept waiting for the moment when the point that all of this is bad and there’s another way to surface… but it never did. There was a moment that looked like it tried, but the ending had a traumatic ending for all involved. I did give it a second star because the world building was great, but the idea that you are more than your looks could have been made at some point. . #beautystandards #Dystopia #youngadult #beautyisduty #properfemalebehavior #goodgirl https://ift.tt/2Iar8rE

Book 32 in #52booksin52weeks is #BlackWave by #michelletea published by @feministpress! This one is pre-dystopic with amazing visual language. A bit too meta for me, but worth it for the Trash facial paragraph. . ⭐⭐ . Michelle is a writer in 90’s San Francisco. She’s published one book, but has struggled to find her stride and has taken up a recreational drug habit and a string of casual relationships. Trying for a fresh start she moves so LA, just in time for the end of the world. . The language in Black Wave is wonderful - the vivid turns of phrase were a pleasure to read (my favorite, of course, was the Trash facial.) However, the plot was sort of meta at times and the timeline unclear. Both the author name and protagonist name is Michelle, and in the end the protagonist writes a book named Black Wave? Sometimes it felt like she was talking to you, the reader, but others it felt like a narrator. The first few chapters of part 2 I was so confused as to what was happening. But the language was solid and some of the social critiques were on the nose - the explanation of gentrification early on was too true. . #predystopia #lgbtq #sanfrancisco #albion #90sNostalgia https://ift.tt/2xF157r
