UK’s reliance on gas for heating exposed by cold snap
As temperatures in the UK plummeted at the beginning of March, homes and businesses turned up their #thermostats and gas demand soared. Cadent, a gas supplier whose north London network covers 2m homes and properties, saw average hourly demand peak at 20GW on the evening of March 1 — almost 1.5 times the average for the time of year. The spike was replicated across the country, with demand for gas jumping to its highest level for eight years, prompting warnings that supplies were not keeping up with the country’s needs.

And this computer is optimized for mining. While most people use laptops, back in the golden days of computer towers, you could heat a room with a couple of desktop computers. And heat is still one of the biggest challenges when you’re building a data center. You have to cool thousands of computers that run 24/7. Qarnot started thinking about edge computing for data centers back in 2010. The company has built three generations of computing heaters with multiple CPUs and sold them to construction companies looking for heaters for their new buildings.

In Practice: The UK's Northern hydrogen heating grid trial
Recent freezing weather conditions have driven UK gas prices to a 12-year high, while an increase in supply outages has reminded the UK public that its grid infrastructure may not be fit for purpose. Grid operators are certainly willing to trial innovative new solutions, but for #heat networks decarbonisation has been a real stumbling block. The UK has faced numerous warnings that it will miss crucial 2020 renewable heat targets and significantly damage its global reputation as a climate leader unless "major policy improvements" are rapidly enforced. In fact, an Energy and Climate Change Select Committee report from September 2016 revealed that the UK is less than half way to meeting its heat targets. Solutions are being trialled and welcomed, with estimates suggesting that heat networks could deliver up to 18% of UK heating demand by 2030, up from current levels of 2% today.

Gas supply warning continues amid icy weather
#NationalGrid has said its first "gas deficit warning" for eight years will remain in place overnight. The power operator issued the warning earlier, saying it may not have enough gas to meet demand due to the current cold snap gripping the UK. Household supplies should not be affected, but the Grid is attempting to meet demand by limiting industrial use. It said it had already seen an increase in #gassupplies as the market responded to its warning that it needed more gas. But a spokeswoman for National Grid said it was "prudent" to keep its earlier warning in place. "We don't have a crystal ball", she added.
