Auralius: The Lost Dumbledore
From what I can tell, there is no mention of a lost Dumbledore child. That is not to say, however, that it is impossible. From my digging so far, I have found that there were many mysteries surrounding the death of Kendra Dumbledore. I had previously been led to believe that she had been killed by her daughter, Ariana, who had been locked away for years. Most of the wizarding public believed that Ariana was locked away because she was a squib. In fact, she was hidden because she had developed an obscurus after being attacked by three muggle boys. After the attack, Percival Dumbledore, her father, retaliated against the muggles. His break of the Statute of Secrecy landed him in Azkaban for life.
Kendra picked up the family and moved them to Godric’s Hollow just before Albus started school. She had to hide Ariana. If the ministry ever found out, they’d lock her up or kill her, like they tried to do to Credence. It was the summer after his last year at Hogwarts that Kendra died and Albus returned home. The summer he met Grindelwald.
The only account we have of Kendra’s death comes from Aberforth in the Deathly Hallows. “Then, when she was fourteen … see, I wasn’t there,” said Aberforth. “If I’d been there, I could have calmed her down. She had one of her rages, and my mother wasn’t as young as she was, and … it was an accident. Ariana couldn’t control it. But my mother was killed.”
The only thing that gives this story some wiggle room is that he wasn’t a witness. This is either an assumption or what he was told by another. Now, had Grindelwald been present at this time, I’d imagine that is how he would know about Creedence’s true identity. Alas, Grindelwald would not arrive in Godric’s Hollow until after Kendra’s funeral.
There are many scenarios that could explain the missing Dumbledore boy that have roots in the time before Percival’s arrest. In the time before the known history of the Dumbledore family, but I don’t think that is the case. For one, Auralius has got to be younger than Ariana was, and Percival was arrested before Albus’ first year at Hogwarts.
We know Ariana was six when she was attacked and developed the obscurus, and Albus was eleven. In The Crimes of Grindelwald, Albus Dumbledore is 46. We don’t know how old Auralius is, but we do know that he is immensely powerful given that he has survived so long as an obscurus. This isn’t unexpected given what we know of Albus’ power, and that Ariana survived until she was fourteen and would have lived longer had she not been killed.
Diving deeper into the etymology of the name Auralius, we find that it is linked to two known historical figures. If there is one thing we know about J. K. Rowling, it is that she loves a name with meaning. According to one Screen Rant article, the death of Markus Auralius was the beginning of the fall of Rome. There has been no mention of another Dumbledore sibling within the Potter-verse. Coincidently, Markus Auralius is an emperor we have few detailed records of.
“Ambrosius Aurelianus was a British war leader in the 5th century, a legendary king of Briton who is intimately tied to the legends of King Arthur and Merlin.” Considering the link between the historical Aurelianus and the fictional Merlin, there is a lot of potential for hidden gems, something I’ve come to expect from the legendary Rowling.
If there’s one thing for certain, we’ll all be holding our breath to find out where this story goes. For now, it could be heading anywhere.
A/N: This is a bit delayed considering I wrote it after I saw the movie in the theater. I wasn’t going to post it at all, but I had a friend who didn’t like the movie, and this changed her mind.
