something i think a lot about for deltarune SPECIFICALLY is how societal expectations, narrative roles, hierarchial positionings, and the metanarrative interactions by the player are all often rolled together and depicted overwhelmingly as a shackle for its characters

even seemingly positive ones like "smart kid" "prince of the darkness" or "nice girl in town" are ideas that constrain the people they're placed upon

in that context, i cannot IMAGINE asriel having a positive relationship with his role as idolized golden child in deltarune

I don't think he wears it well. this isn't the sort of story where people can wear that kind of overwhelming weight well

especially considering how asriel is the offscreen apex of all of those conditions I mentioned. both in universe and out, his mere existence is charged with this gigantic significance

so yeah, I think theres no way asriel makes it out of this as "pure uncomplicated good golden boy who everyone loves." something has to crack somewhere and i think one of those cracks could be asriels fucking egg LMAO. Estrogen Will Save Her

i hit the joint too hard and dreamt of a beautiful parallel universe where the general fan favorite theory was that dess and asriel were a t4t yuri couple. dess was a stud butch lesbian while asriel was a an egg waiting to crack and finds herself wondering why she thinks of dess the way she does when she considers herself a “straight guy”

i think it’s very easy to gloss over kris as a somewhat stereotypically edgy teenager, mostly assumed to be the result of the whole not being in control of your own soul and body thing.

but i also think it’s important to note that kris very likely has some form of ptsd. adoption, especially in younger children, is almost guaranteed to cause a significant amount of psychological trauma on a kid to begin with. not only is kris adopted, but they’re the only human in the entire town they live in.

they definitely expressed a desire to be like the rest of their family as a younger kid, wearing a horned headband to look like the goat monsters of their adoptive family. this is super in line with the general dysmorphia and identity issues that interracial adoptees will often experience, especially if they’re significantly othered from the rest of their community.

identity is such a key theme in deltarune and we don’t completely understand why yet. we name ourselves at the beginning of the game, only to have that identity ripped away and we’re instead forced into the life of kris. kris, who no doubt has some identity issues stemming from their humanity as a whole. perhaps their story is something similar to chara’s, maybe they feel a resentment towards humans or perhaps feel abandoned by them.

but we’re told from the very start that no one can choose who you they are in this world, and kris is reminded time and time again that they are painfully human.

i don’t think kris being possessed before the game would work, really, because i don’t think it is the idea of losing control of one’s body that makes kris’s possession compelling.

i think it’s the fact it is losing that body as a character to an audience, who, no matter what, is beyond you, and above you, and the idea that someone outside of the narrative, just by consuming the story, is tormenting one of the characters actively, is what makes it so interesting.

that just by playing a game, you are intruding upon someone else’s life, warping their world, and taking away their sense of self. i really wouldn’t be as captivated by it if it didn’t have that unique element of experiencing being the problem. not by playing as the antagonist, but by you, just you, handling the controller, being inherently antagonistic.

so. i dunno. them being possessed before you are involved at all; it just feels like an unnecessary, pretty weak concept. you lose all the fascinating “player-protagonist relationship” stuff, because it wasn’t you then.

Noelle handed the fanbase absolutely priceless content on a silver platter and you’re telling me everyone’s already OVER IT??😭 I mean there was a post where Noelle said that she would have to hide when she was crying as a child because of how angry her mother would get if she found her.
