Canada's highest court has upended the federal government's 65-year-old claim that an Indigenous nation from British Columbia's Interior no longer exists.

In a 7-2 decision, the Supreme Court of Canada said the Sinixt Nation, whose reservation is in Washington state, has constitutionally protected Indigenous rights to hunt in their ancestral territory north of the border.

The ruling means that if Indigenous groups outside of modern-day Canada can prove they descended from a pre-contact society in what is now Canada, they can claim Section 35(1) rights under the Constitution, which recognizes and affirms the rights of Indigenous Peoples.

"Persons who are not Canadian citizens and who do not reside in Canada can exercise an Aboriginal right," the decision said.

The high court said the Sinixt, part of the Salish people who primarily occupied territory in the B.C. Interior and form the Lakes Tribe in northwestern United States, did not "lose" their identity by moving within their traditional territory south of the Canada-U.S. border.

hot take. i think jokes that hate on rainbow clothing and accessories and kids getting purple undercuts and going to a GSA and going by names like “kai” or “zelda” aren’t funny. like... idk man maybe we should just let lgbt kids go through their “holy shit i’m gay/bi/trans and i’m gonna tell the world about it!!” phase? like it’s literally not harming them? especially the GSA thing. yes, GSAs can be toxic as is any school club environment but it’s better than them being completely isolated from the real world and only having an lgbt space online (which is clearly detrimental as evidenced by all you weirdos here). let them put flags and pronoun pins on their backpack, let them get a bad haircut, let them wear smelly dysphoria hoodies that make them comfortable, let them put on bad eyeliner and lipgloss. let gay and trans kids exist without being ridiculed for not being out of their coming out “honeymoon” phase. let them fall in love with being lgbt. it’s better than repressing it and hating themselves for years, isn’t it?

HEY. LAMS SHIPPERS. Yes, you. Get over here. You are not allowed to say “Hamilton only loved Laurens, he only married Eliza to fit in in society, he didn’t actually love her!” SHUT UP. He loved Eliza, okay? He spent so many years with her, and yes, he did cheat on her, with Laurens and with Maria, but he loved her and she loved him. They had kids together, and built a family, and Eliza was by his side the entire time. She mourned when he died and kept his legacy alive. Hamilton loved Eliza. 

I’m not saying Lams wasn’t real - it was. They loved each other too! This doesn’t mean you can say Hamliza wasn’t real though. I’ve seen some Hamliza shippers saying that he and Laurens were just friends, but Hamilton loved Eliza AND Laurens how hard is it to understand.

He loved them BOTH, and him loving one did not detract from him loving the other.
