the Schizm games: reviewing some playthrough videos as if they were B-movie sci-fi

#1 - most watchable - Schizm 2: Chameleon

the cutscenes (there are a lot) play like an atypically subdued Farscape episode: bizarre costumes, chill music, great use of light and scale, and an innocent, child-like player/narrator navigating a ridiculously convoluted plot.

I skipped the puzzle solutions (the reason I'm not replaying these games for real) but overall I was hooked.

#2 - best aesthetic - Schizm: Mysterious Journey

this is where the artistic appeal started: Gaudi-inspired architecture, Giger biomechanical devices, carnival color choices, and amateur actors in leather jackets. hell yeah!

as it goes on it falls into more "ancient world" architecture tropes, and the plot is barely anything, but if you're an artist I recommend skipping through for inspiration.

#3 - most unsettling - Mysterious Journey 3: Nemesis

the NPCs are supposed to be brain-scrambled teleporter accident victims, which gives them some fun Lynchian dialogue. but it quickly becomes clear that these are actually cheap outsourced VO actors faithfully reciting grammar errors in machine-translated scripts. the guide/"nemesis" character has a personality, but it's jarringly sarcastic/meta/cynical for the series.

similarly, the overall art style is fresh, but it began to lose my trust and made me question how much was asset flips and pre-fabs.

to be fair, I think this playthrough skipped some lore. with HEAVY editing it could be compelling, but mostly it made me sad that Netflix-AI-slop vibes are taking over even this bizarre series.

all-in-all, these games are at a convergence of mood and aesthetics I'd like to see more games/film dig into: the earnestness and DIY of 90s adventure with the bizarro aesthetics of shows like Farscape or Lexx.

it's ready for an art movie walking simulator vibe adaptation a la recent Mamoru Oshii like Assault Girls or Garm Wars, IMO.

The Internet Archive is at a crucial juncture in the lawsuit brought against it by multiple record companies. The latter have successfully requested a thirty day stay to negotiate a settlement. The Internet Archive has begun a petition to request that the lawsuit be dropped entirely, due to the risk it poses to the organization and its projects, most important of which right now is the Wayback Machine, the ridiculously huge 'time machine for the internet', due to reasons I hopefully need not mention.
