Dendromancy and the Magic of Hugging Trees
I’ve had a lot of good luck doing magic with trees recently, so I wanted to share. Trees are old and full of wisdom, and they’re happy to share if you’re willing to listen. They don’t grant good fortune as such, but they can lend you their better qualities if you ask. Wisdom, stoicism, patience, clarity, and calm are all characteristics trees have to offer. So! Here’s my guide to partnering with trees.
1) Pick a tree that seems right to you. I like big old oaks and cottonwoods, but I also had great luck with a date palm recently so any tree will do as long as you respect it!
2) Ideally you should take your time to get to know the tree you’ll be performing your craft with. They are steady creatures, but they’ll respect that you live at a different pace than they do. Spend some time meditating with them, listening too them, studying their features, getting to know their form, and acknowledging their current state in the season (sleeping in winter, thriving in summer, etc.).
3) Hug that tree. Seriously. Give that tree a big old skin-on-bark hug. Feel your feelings. Let the tree feel your feelings and strengthen your bond.
4) Stop by and have conversations with the tree as often as you wish, but once a season is a good baseline.
5) Spells! Once you’ve bonded with a tree you can ask it for help with spellcraft. Here are two spells I’ve used lately:
a) A spell for wisdom and direction - This spell is for when you need some longer-term wisdom to navigate a difficult stretch of life or to overcome a specific obstacle. You will need an egg, something with elder flower (I used a liquor). Meditate with your tree, and tell it what you need (wisdom, patience, fortitude, etc.) and give it your offering. Bury the eggs at its base and pour the elder flower over it. Take a token from the tree, (some leaves, bark, fallen fruit or nuts, one I pulled a nail out of a tree and took that), and hug the tree to seal your deal. Carry the token with you and consider it whenever you find yourself in need of your tree’s aid. If drawing circles and calling the elements are components of your craft, they will only improve the efficacy of this spell.
b) A spell for wisdom- This is a spell for asking for short-help from your patron tree. Go to your tree and tell it what you need. Take a fruit or seed from the tree and carry it with you as a talisman for the day or night, but be sure to return it before a full day passes. When you return the talisman bury it near the tree with some water and make sure to thank the tree for its help. It’s rude to keep it for longer than a day and you should apologize if you do. Don’t be too concerned though, most trees are patience and forgiving.
That’s it! Hug trees and live well!
