June 11, 1972 - Baltimore - The band seems like they’re in a great mood and Robert is very chatty.  Some gems during the show - Right after STH, Robert talks about having just seen Elvis the day before.  He makes a few comments (in good humor) about how his voice has come down a few keys and his waist has gotten a bit bigger.  (Ahem, ever heard of the pot and the kettle?)  Then, of course, he throws in something about some “chicks.”  After Tangerine, Bonzo does a quick Johnny Cash impression then laughs hysterically like only he can do (it’s quick and faint but hilarious).  Robert’s introduction of Bonzo (which comes right after) is so funny, too.  Oh, and at the beginning of the show he messes up the lyrics to Immigrant Song.  Just a fantastic listen!!

hi! have you read any led zeppelin biographies? and can you recommend any?

Indeed, I have, my dearest anon. I think I've read just over a dozen Zeppelin books [my copy of Zeppelin and Philosophy just arrived!] and have two on display here in my home.

I can’t say I have a single ‘favorite,’ because they all fit in as pieces to the puzzle that is Led Zeppelin. The first one I read was Hammer of the Gods because we already owned a copy.  Are the critics right about it being over sensationalized and full of ‘fish stories’ (pun intended)?  Definitely.  But that doesn’t mean it makes for a bad read or is void of any remnants of the truth.

Despite what Jimmy says, to me a big part of the magic about Zeppelin is in the myths that surround them.The scene, the overindulgence, the sex, the drugs, the groupies, the world travels, the decade itself, the philosophizing, the folktales and fables, cultural influences, experimentation, pushing boundaries, etc.  In the history and hedonism and how it all played out for them.

I take everything I ready about Zep with a grain of salt, knowing that the over-sensationalized stories are just as far from the truth as the modest ‘we were playing monopoly then in bed by 11pm’ stories.

That being said, I don’t think it’s wrong to read Stephen Davis’ book, it’s almost a right of passage to me as a Zeppelin fan (His book based on the ‘lost notebooks’ from ‘75 is another goody if you want the juicy stuff). 

But Mick Wall’s When Giants Walked the Earth is fabulous- he writes with a level head but it still makes for a wicked read, a great choice for your first foray into Zeppelin.

Tramped Underfoot: The Power and Excess by Barney Hoskyns sets itself apart because of how it’s written- it’s all quotes and anecdotes woven together (chronologically, if I remember correctly, as opposed to thematic) to give an ‘in the wings of the stage’ or fly-on-the-wall kind of feel.  Very cool, but I wouldn’t recommend it as a Zep starter.

Once you’ve done the “Gen Ed requirements” you’re ready to dive a little deeper.  Perhaps one of the books on the lyrics like From a Whisper to a Scream or Dazed and Confused, or any of the “Zeppelin on Zeppelin” quote and interview compilations.  Then there’s the books that focus on Peter Grant, or Cole’s semi-blasphemous account in Stairway to Heaven. Or the individual bios, of course.

Becoming Led Zeppelin thoughts & rambles [share yours below]

Okay so let's be real. For fans like us, we'll never be satiated. Nothing will ever be enough. And relatively little of the film's content was brand sprankin' new. That being as it were, I thoroughly enjoyed the film. Part of the allure is, I'm sure, simply being able to see Zeppelin on the big screen. (I saw it in Imax, but It's not like the surround-screen thing I remember as a kid. It was the same as a regular screen, but maybe bigger?). Nevertheless, the sights and sounds were magnificent (WLL isolated vocals... ahem..in a public setting? awkward ).

It was touching to see how fondly they all talked about that early part of their journey together. Some of my favorite parts were hearing Bonzo's laugh (be still my heart and watering eyes), Jonesy talking about the rhythm section being 'sensitive creatures,' and Robert talking about the vulnerabilities of opening up to Jimmy and writing together. Also, shout out to all the moments where Jonesy was a straight-up riot.

And of course, I never tire of hearing Jimmy speak of the whole experience in his usual way. His absolute confidence in what he - and they - were doing, combined with their lightning-in-a-bottle alchemical energy, makes his aura of True Will Magick more than believable - it's palpable.

Does anyone know where the interviews were filmed? It's similar to the mental inspiration I had for the opening scenes in my Lechery & Lace fic, and I'm not sure if I've seen it somewhere outside of my head. It definitely has Tower House/Jimmy vibes if you ask me, and I can't help but imagine what the behind-the-scenes was like of getting the film just the way he wanted What details he curated - the books on the table, what scenes and overlays were shown at which moments. The light and shade of it all.

The scene with Jimmy's sessions datebook that he still has- incredible piece of history. Also, hands. Speaking of which.. during the bow scene from Dazed in Denmark, somewhere around the 3:45 mark from this clip here, I could hardly keep it together. As his fingers got more frenetic and closer to the fretboard, the pitch and volume increased in time, and everything about it is just so sexual and like a fucking orgasm, that I I jumped and let out a yelp out loud at the bow's shrieking climax. My husband (who knows well how I feel about all of this) smirked and said, "You allright over there?" and I had to bite my tongue literally so hard to not give myself away entirely.

I felt so many other feels watching the film... sentimental about the passage of time & the fleeting innocence of youth. How to age with a graceful balance of holding on and letting go. Musings on the role of nostalgia (be it for our own bygone days or of an era long before us), and of global history and how we should tread forward.

If you've made it this far, God bless ya. I love feeling called to dip back into this world again, however briefly, and I can't say how overjoyed and relieved it makes me to see so many of the same familiar faces around here. Xoxo 😘
