Hey guys! So, I got inspired by @rubinecorvus​ Wartober event to do something similar for Christmas! So here are prompts for each day of December. You can do as many or as little as you like! 

This is for fic writers, artists, editors, etc. whatever you like to do to participate. And though this is named for the famous letter to the German Commander, it doesn’t have to be BoB (or even HBO War) related. You can do this for any fandom you want! Tag your posts #chrisnuts2021 if you’d like to take part and feel free to tag me in your creations so I can reblog them :)

-Rahikainen the pimp :’DDDD!!!!!

-Rahikainen the pimp.

-Rahikainen……… Just Rahikainen. I love what the director did here.

-Poor Hietanen’s face next to Rokka :D I love how everyone laughs at Rokka’s antics, it makes it so clear how young the characters are.

-And I love how Rokka is shown as forceful, that works well for a modern audience that is not familiar with the strict hierarchies of the time. 

-Rokka’s wife looks too young. The scenes with her and Rokka are cute, but she looks too young. She’s a farmer’s wife, and during this time period she would have aged even faster due to working.

-Hietanen doesn’t die a virgin. On one hand this is very cute, pure fanservice. On the other hand, the kiss was enough to convey the feelings of young love from the book. 

-Lotta has outstayed her welcome. Talking to another fan made me realize there were no older Lottas. Lotta is apparently supposed to be working three different jobs in a short period of time, and this is not an allegory for Lotta. If director wants Lottas, please make another series about Lotta, I would love to watch. (I wonder if this is where the inspiration for the Lotta Svärd comic came from.)

-They’re so handsome in their long coats.

-There are two guys walking ahead to cut up the snow for the officers, lol. Small detail that brings a lot of relatable realism to the story.

-Mirroring the condemned with Rokka and Tassu is a great move, really puts into perspective Rokka’s distaste for authority.

-The party scene!!!!

-It’s smaller and more understated than the 1980’s film. Which makes sense, it doesn’t need to be the ‘big character breaker’ since we’ve already seen the boys make fun in other scenes. 

-Koskela smiles! Koskela is so pretty when he smiles. It’s like the sun.

-The officers smiling and even smiling when Koskela is being taken away, very ‘humane’ if that makes sense.

-Love that the officers are shown as having revelry in their own, small, ordered way. Koskela making trouble is even more homo than the 1985 version.

-Awwww Rokka and Vanhala are so cute sitting together, not even in a couple way.

-Did the officer just refer to Hietanen/Koskela as a single unit :0

-That’s it, the officer ships it.

-Awww Koskela is so cute catching rats

-The trench! The trench is so cool! Very atmospheric thanks to the light and the men doing ‘normal’ things. Best parts of 1955, but updated for moving cameras.

-Hauhia is very good at the ‘misplaced youth’ look, well-cast role.

-The Christmas scenes at home really drive home how important leave is to Rokka.

-Song about circle of life couldn’t have been better chosen.

-Rakasta näitä kotikuvia, ne ovat hyvin suhteellisia maaseudulla asuville ja sellaisille taloille. 

-ROKKA SISÄÄN. Ylistys. 

-Susi änkyttää, awww. Ymmärrän miksi nämä kaksi nähdään parina. Heidän ystävyytensä on erittäin suloinen. -Mies, joka pelaa Rokkaa, on niin hyvä. Niin hyvä näyttelijä. Halusin selkeästi pelata todellista suomalaista sankaria. 

-Rokka The Musical: DDDD

-Lehdon pieni taputus Riitaojan selkään ... Hän on kuin lapsi, joka ei osaa olla ystävällinen. Sydämeni. Ymmärrän miksi ihmiset yhdistävät heidät. -Säiliöt!!!!!!! -Laukaukset ovat paljon vähemmän selkeitä kuin vuonna 1955, säiliöt näyttävät enemmän kuin he liikkuvat todellisen metsän läpi eivätkä vain kuvata hyvältä. Molemmat toimivat, mutta tämä on luonnollisempaa. -Joo suosikkini otti säiliön! Jännitys ja nopea keskittyminen paljastavat paljon kirjan kohtauksen tarkoituksen. -Pommitetun kylän tutkiminen muistuttaa minua tekemästä samaa airsoftin aikana pelatessani ensimmäistä maailmansotaa. Näyttelijät ovat onneksi erittäin hyviä, muuten tämä tunne olisi kuvattu LARP. -Lotta! Lisää Lotta! Rakastan sitä, miten tarina näyttää heidät sellaisina kuin miehet näkisivät heidät, upseerin käsivarsilla tai poissa taistelusta tai sairaanhoitajina. 

-Rakasta humalan juhlaa, jonka vastakohtana on siisti paraati, jota vain upseerit katsovat. 

-Kiusasiko se vain Hietanen/Rahikainen !? 

-Hietasen roolissa oleva näyttelijä on tuskin siinä vaiheessa, että hän on liian vanha rooliinsa. Mutta hän on erittäin hyvä saamaan "hämmentyneen hyvän pojan" esille, joten hän on edelleen hyvä. -Rakasta, miten tämä sopeutuminen todella koskee "Emme todellakaan halua sinua tänne, mutta olet valloittava armeija, joten emme voi sanoa ei" epämukavuutta kohtauksessa Veran kanssa. -OMG VERA. -Kun hän suuteli häntä, se toimii hyvin 

-Se ei ole yhtä huolestuttava ja surullinen kuin alkuperäinen, tehokkaampi näytöllä. -Sulaan siitä, kuinka söpö tämä on. 

-Lyhyesti sanottuna, parin nyt Rahikainen/Hietanen. English -Love these home front images, they are very relatable to someone who lives in the countryside and those kinds of houses. -ROKKA ENTERS. PRAISE BE. -Susi stutters, awww. I can see why these two are seen as a couple. Their friendship is very sweet. -The guy playing Rokka is so good. Such a good actor. Clearly wanted to play the True Finnish Hero. -Rokka The Musical :DDDD -Lehto’s little pat on Riitaoja’s back… He’s like a child who doesn’t know how to be kind. My heart. I see why people couple them. -TANKS!!!!!!! -The shots are a lot less clearer than 1955, tanks look more like they’re rolling through an actual forest rather than just being filmed to look good. Both work, but this is more natural. -Yay my fav took out a tank! The suspense and quick focus does a lot to show the point of the scene in the book. -Exploring the bombed-out village reminds me of doing the same during airsoft while playing WWI. The actors are luckily very good, otherwise this would have the feeling of a filmed LARP. -Lotta! More Lotta! I love how the story shows them as the men would see them, on the arms of an officer or away from the combat, or as nurses. -Love the drunken revelry being contrasted by the neat parade, which only the officers watch. -Did it just tease Hietanen/Rahikainen!? -The actor playing Hietanen is just barely on the cusp of being too old for the role. But he’s very, very good at getting the ‘confused good boy’ across, so he is still good. -Love how this adaptation really goes for the ‘Well we don’t really want you here, but you’re the conquering army so we can’t really say no’ discomfort in the scene with Vera. -OMG VERA. -Having her kiss him works well -It’s no less poignant and sad than the original, more effective on screen.-I will melt from how cute this is. -In short, I now ship Rahikainen/Hietanen.

Hi! I noticed you thought the actors in -85 version are too young looking. However, the actors were specifically chosen as the age they are in the book. Just wondering if you knew this?

I assumed most of them to 21 at minimum in the book because I couldn’t find the correct information, but figured the actors of the 1985 film were chosen very close to minimum recruitment age. Usually I see actors that age play people younger than themselves, so the effect was very jarring to the point where it coloured my experience and it was hard to not be reminded of how young everyone was.  This is probably the intended effect by the director, but the rest of the film is so heavy on the feeling of ‘war-is-hell’ and has less of the character action that makes the book so moving, so instead of ‘your favs really were this tiny’ it felt very symbolic and cliché to me. I’ve been told there is a five hour version since I wrote that review. I’m looking forward to seeing that version, it sounds like it would be better than the two hour one and might change my opinion about the casting.

-Kaikki näyttelevät hyvin hahmojen ikäisenä, mikä toimii erittäin hyvin. Pienet yksityiskohdat, kuten Karilouton hiukset kammattuna vedellä, Rahikainen varastaa naisten alusvaatteita, tapa, jolla kaikki suhtautuvat lähtöön. Hyvin paljon "todellisia nuoria miehiä", jotka herättävät kotiin luonteen. -Koskela on super söpö. 

-Ihanaa, että tämä sopeutuminen on "jännitystä" taistelukohtauksissa, mutta säästää todella kauhistuttavaa tavaraa hetkiin, jolloin se on todella kauhistuttavaa sotilaille, kun he eivät odota sitä. 

-Riitaojan vikojen pelko välittää erittäin hyvin levottomuutta taistelussa. Rakasta kuinka naturalistista ja hillittyä kaikki on, superpuomipuomin puuttuminen ja hiljaiset taistelukohtaukset helpottavat ajatusta, että se tapahtuu suomalaisessa metsässä eikä kaukaisessa elokuvamaassa. 

-Myös vikoja. Erittäin relatable, koska meitä kaikkia ärsyttää metsän bugeja. English -All actors act ‘their characters’ age’ very well! Small things like Karilouto’s water-combed hair, Rahikainen stealing women’s underwear, and their loud reaction to being driven away to war. The actions do a lot to paint a picture of young men of their age. -Wow, Koskela is handsome! -The adaption is heavy on suspense and excitement in battle scenes, while saving the ‘horror of war’ for moments when the soldiers don’t expect it, when they are at rest and so on. This works really well to convey both the excitement in the novel, and the stark contrast of what the battlefield is like to civillians. -Riitaoja’s implied phobia of bugs does a lot to convey the feeling of unease in the air to an audience who isn’t used to war. -Love the natural lighting and downplayed battle scenes, and the bugs! It all combines to make a very realistic-feeling battle, the kind that really could happen in a Scandinavian forest, and not some far-off movieland battle.
