Good opportunity to mention that Maya calling herself a "big sister" is a literal translation from the Japanese which doesn't imply literally seeing herself as a sibling but rather someone who watches over somebody. It's tricky to translate so I understand going the literal route but I feel like the original intent literally got lost in translation.

the thing about phoenix and maya's relationship is that Yes maya refers to herself as phoenix's (big) sister twice in canon but it feels like some people are so focused on forcing them into nuclear family sibling dynamics because of it that they forget that they are friends who are absolutely bonkers crazy balls-to-the-fucking-walls insane about each other first and foremost

And thus, Maya May comes to a close!

My goals were really modest: just post one thing every day related to one of my favorite characters of all time. Obviously the big thing was sharing the differences between the localization and the original Japanese lines of the game, which became the concept for my new(ish) @gyakuten-attorney blog.

But really, posting about Maya every day was a fun way to engage in this series I love dearly, and remind myself why I love it so--the unique depictions of close bonds and the trust characters have for each other.

It also showed that coming up with something to post every day was super hard! For anyone who participated this year and actually posted every day, mad kudos to you!

I'm a little bummed I didn't have a chance to draw anything for the month, but I'm a freelance illustrator by day and May was pretty busy with regards to client work--but I did have this idea in my back pocket I'll save for my next personal drawing.

A teaser for it is from this bit in 6-3 about Phoenix promising Maya they'll go eat together at Eldoons once he gets her acquitted and they go home. The overall spirit of the conversation is the same between Japanese and English, and the localization choices regarding food are really cute, I like.

But this monologue in blue is a completely different line in Japanese, and it'll be something I highlight with that future drawing.
