Although I know when summer weather typically begins each year, I always seem to be caught off guard. To beat the heat, I always have items on hand that I can pull out, which allow me the ease of looking pulled together. . . Linen (or perhaps more accurately, linen-blend clothing) is a summer staple; with dresses, skirts, shirts, shorts, pants, jumpsuits and my favorite, blazers, it's easy to create a linen ensemble. . . Styling Tip 1: I've tried several color combinations, and what I've found most visually appealing in this cool, textured fabric is #blackandtan (pictured), white & tan, and (almost) any color linen with white -as the summer progresses, I'll illustrate various linen-color combos! . . If you are new to linen or if you've avoided it because it has a tendency to wrinkle easily, embrace it! This natural fabric breathes well, and it is generally understood that the nature of this 'relaxed' fabric is to wrinkle; if you are a 'Beach-Bum' like myself, wear a linen outfit to a beach wedding or to an evening cookout. . . Styling Tip 2: Can't find a linen piece in your size or price-point? Shop the men's department! I found this blazer online @target in their men's department (Goodfellow) -it was on clearance, and I loved the herringbone pattern. I sized down, and the fit was perfect. . . Starting off the new month with a #colorswatch in the #pantone #coloroftheyear . . Six months and six colorful ways to wear #livingcoral. Although I must admit, I can't take credit for this color combo. . . I've posted before about shopping your closet, and at least once a year, you should consider it; not at the end of the year to purge your wardrobe (though this isn't an entirely a bad idea...it really scares me😳), but instead try going through your closet at the beginning of the year (or in late autumn/early winter) when the next year's trends are announced after Fashion Week(s), and the Pantone color palette for the follow year is given. . . The only Living Coral item I have bought for 2019's color of the year has been the clutch/crossbody purse; everything else I've posted has been tucked away in my closet, so you can imagine how pleasantly surprised I was to find not only a wrap dress with coral and neon brights in one of the year's biggest trends: #tiedye . . Styling Tip: Trends are cyclical -buy pieces you love/hold onto pieces you love...chances are you may find it in style before long! . . #twowaystowear Tuesday, all you Dappled Little Things...how are you feeling about color pairing thus far? . . For the past two days, I've shared some of my favorite ways to choose colors in order to create a color-blocked look; while you might find pairing colors daunting, perhaps if you understood a little more about the process, you may find it easier to do! . . Color-Blocking by the Numbers -okay, so you're picking colors, using the color wheel, and following the pairing rules, but there is still one more thing to know: the percentages! Even if you choose the perfect color combination, your look may still be visually overwhelming: to reduce the visual contrast, while ensuring the pieces you've chosen complement and don't compete with each other, vary the proportion of color in the pieces you chose to pair. . . In the case of this fabulous green jumpsuit: with such an amazing cut (wrap front, flutter sleeves, dramatic hem) and color, I wanted it to be the main focus of my outfit; from my shoulders to shins, it covers about 70% of my body, so I had 30% more color to add. . . The jacket offers about 25% more color: it's a shorter length and the sleeves only reach mid-way down my forearm (I chose to wear the jacket open as not to reduce the overall percentage of the jumpsuit). . . With 95% of the color in my outfit accounted for, the remaining 5% I saved for my belt; although quite skinny (small in width), the rich cobalt blue is a large jolt of color (I ignored the shoes in the math because the floral pumps had varying shades of the green jumpsuit, the acqua-teal jacket, and blue belt, tying all three pieces together!). . . Colors abound in today's post! . . Whenever I'm asked about which color to wear with what, I always tell clients to head ro the color wheel; for years I steered away from pairing any colors, instead opting to pair a color with a neutral, out of fear of the dreaded 'color clash'. . . But no more! With the right color wheel (I prefer to use the one by Academichic because instead of using computer generated colors, they use dyed fabric which gives a realistic presentation of what colors on clothing actually look like), combing colors is easier than it looks! . . Analogous colors: three colors that are next to each other on a color wheel; they work well together because they share elements of the same color. . . How to do it? Find a color (or the closest approximation -in the case of this jumpsuit, green) on the color wheel. Locate the colors on either side of your chosen color: yellow-green (chartreuse) and green-blue (teal); now, you can choose two or three of these colors to wear together! . . Alternative: I don't really own anything in a lime green color, so I chose another set of analogous colors using green: green (the jumpsuit), a light teal (the jacket), and blue (actually a richer cobalt-blue for the belt). . . Anyone else have a velvet crush? . . Okay, my Transition Season (i.e. Winter-to-Spring) Footwear is as follows: 1. Peep-Toed Booties 2. Thick-Strap Suede Sandals 3. Velvet Sandals . . Like suede in the winter, I have a fondness for velvet starting in late autumn; every year, I like to add pieces to my my collection..er, I mean wardrobe. Velvet pumps and flats are ideal on chilly days, but on the off chance of a warm day in fall or cool day in spring, velvet sandals are the perfect choice. . . Style Tip: Ankle-Tie Sandals have been having a moment; play with your style and try trying the straps in different ways: when I bought these, they were styled in a bow (as pictured), but the bow can be tricky to achieve (this is the first time I actually styled the sandals like this), an alternative style was to wrap the straps around the ankles and tie them in a knot in front (yeah...I probably should have shown an example, but you'll have to wait until fall, when Transition Season returns!😳) . . It is a fresh way to sport florals and adds an unexpected flair to a color-blocked outfit. . . Transitional Footwear: If you've already tried peep-toed booties on a cooler morning, my next suggestion would be to try a suede sandal (with thick straps). Suede is such a sumptuous cold-weather fabric, so carry it into the spring with your sandals. #twowaystowear Tuesday and I'm showing you three ways to wear open-toed booties (and yes, I do own these beauties in black with the gold grommets)!😳 . . Look No. 1: A warm day in winter; I styled a woolen camel vest as a dress, belted it with a fanny pack, and wore a leopard trench (to cover the back vent of the vest and) to add visual interest to my ensemble. The booties brought out a minor color in the coat. Look No. 2: Transitioning to Spring; I styled separates as a dress and hid the juncture between them with a belt bag. The cropped trench completed the look. The neutral booties don't detract from the monochromatic effect! Look No. 3: Transition Wear; I first wore this outfit to a class reunion, on an autumn evening, with my black leather moto. The booties highlight the minor blue color in the dress, as does the belt. I like the black for later-in-the-day looks, and I'm thinking I should have featured a white denim jacket (not with this dress) instead for my transitional outerwear series. 🤔 Shopping Tip: I love fashion, and I love a bargain; I especially love where the two intersect! When I manage to find a style of shoes (or clothing) that really speaks to me, I tend to go a little overboard with my purchasing. Why? I love the styling options I have with each (even if at the time I buy them, I'm not sure how I may style a particular color). My mantra: Buy the shoes now, and the outfit will come! . . All right, Dappled Little Things...still transitioning into Spring (although, where I am, has unofficially reached summer🌞) and we are on outerwear piece no.3: the denim jacket. . . My top three transitional outerwear pieces: Tan trench, Olive field Jacket, and a Medium Blue denim jacket (I shall be adding one more later this week!). . . Recap: Most of these pieces you probably already own, so, for 2019's two 'Transitional Seasons' (winter-to-spring and summer-to-autumn), I'm giving you alternatives: a cropped trench in a bold color✔, a camouflage field jacket✔, and today, a black (or white) denim jacket✔ . . I've always had a secret love affair with black denim -the first denim jacket I ever bought, was black with an angled waist and silver snaps (even the back vent on this cropped beauty had snaps...hey, it was the 80's!). . . The ubiquitous denim trucker jacket is iconic, and you'll find as many iterations as there are shades of indigo, but once you've added those to your wardrobe, try one in black (or white). . . I liken mine to a summer version of my leather moto: sexy and edgy, only is a warm weather weight! . . Styling Tip: Transitional Footwear -sometimes finding something to put of your feet can be just as challenging as what to wear over your shoulders, especially when the days are both hot and cold; a peep-toe bootie may be the perfect item to bridge the winter-to-spring seasons. Providing warmth by covering your foot and ankles, but still allowing your toes to 'breathe' when it gets hot, you know, I've got several of these stems in my Shoe Arsenal! . . My second pick for 'Transitional Outerwear' is a field jacket! . . I think I own one in (almost) every color, and although I 💖 each for their individual color-styling opportunities, my favorite has got to be this particular jacket in #camouflage print. . . Color Styling Tip: When styling a camo piece treat is as a neutral; wear it with denim (like this dress) and a t-shirt, or for a colorful twist, head to the color wheel, and pair it with a deep red or burgundy for fall, or try a pink for spring! . . Styling Tip 1: In the spring, don't be afraid to reach for a dress or skirt in an A-line silhouette! After the winter (and the extra pounds I seem to gain between Thanksgiving and Valentine's Day🤔), a flared-hem dress is universally flattering with the added bonus of hiding extra weight! . . Styling Tip 2: Boy meets Girl! #twowaystowear Tuesday, and I'm giving you a Spring and Autumn way to wear a cropped trench in an amazing color. . . In yesterday's post, I told you that since 'Transition Season' happens twice a year, I utilize the same same outerwear and footwear, but just style them differently. . . For the Spring: I try to take advantage of every warm moment in the sun; midi and maxi dresses from previous seasons are brought into a springtime rotation. To stave of the cool mornings, chilly evenings, and over eager air conditioning, I don outerwear that I can remove (and sometimes store, depending where I am) as the temperature rises. . . For the Autumn: At the first hint of fall, I'm ready to put on my cool weather favs; I like to think of my outerwear as an extension of my outfit (a 3rd piece) -I try to co-ordinate each piece (as I do in the Winter) to give my ensemble a truly autumnal look. . . Styling Tip: Dress for the warmest part of the day! You can layer up in the morning, and de-layer as the day warms, but if the weather changes (which it often does in the Spring and Autumn), you'll still be warm enough to tackle the rest of the day, and look good doing so! . . Transitioning your clothing between seasons can be tricky, but it doesn't have to be difficult, considering 'transition season' happens twice a year (winter-to-spring and summer-to-fall). . . For me, many of the clothing choices are the same (outerwear and shoes) during these transitional periods, because the weather is often the same: cool mornings and evenings with warm afternoons. But how I manage to navigate the daily temperate changes is with how I 'style' my clothes. . . So this week, I shall share with you some of my favorite go-to outerwear pieces for transitioning from winter-to-spring, starting with a colored, cropped trench coat. . . A trench coat (in tan) is one of the items I include in my 'Essential Capsule Wardrobe'; a three-season, indispensable piece, you'll reach for time and time again to complete your look. But when the days begin to warm, you may want to brighten up your wardrobe, and a cropped trench in a colorful hue is just piece to add! . . Styling Tip: Spring dresses abound when the mercury begins to rise, but if you're not a standard size (i.e. the same size on top as on the bottom), finding the perfect fitting dress can seem like an impossible mission; an easy fix? Separates! Buy a top and a skirt in the same print (each in a size that fits your individual measurements) -tuck the blouse into skirt and belt it (here I chose a #beltbag), and voila! You are 'dressed' for the occasion! Adding a colored, cropped trench in the major hue of your ensemble (here, it's a salmon pink) ties your monochromatic look together! . . #throwbackthursday post for all you color fanatics! . . When I styled this outfit, this was the look on my face 😳. I didn't believe I could pair stripes with geometrical or coral with blue. I bought the top and shorts from different stores in different years; but I really liked the prints and the colors (but not together - ordinarily, I would have chosen to wear white with each piece). . . So how I came about pairing this coral top and bright blue shorts? Color Wheel! . . Looking at the color wheel (I use the one by Academichic), coral (which belongs to the oranges) is complementary to the light blue (i.e. blues are opposite the oranges on the color wheel). I really like this color combo and may change it up a little using a coral blouse, navy skirt and the emerald green accessories (I chose green for the belt and bag because green and blue are analogous colors (i.e. they are next to each other on the color wheel), while green and coral are split-complementary colors (the color next to a color's complement: green is opposite red, and orange is next to red). . . Confused yet? Yeah, so was I when I started using the color wheel. My advice is to begin slowly (just like with the #printmixing). Start off pairing complementary colors (opposite each other) or analogous colors (side-by-side). . . Metallic footwear is the new neutral! If you are at a loss with what to wear with anything, try a metallic: silver, gold, bronze, rose gold, pewter...any of these will add visual interest to your outfit! . . Okay...in last week's fbf post, I asked, could have too much of a good thing? (Remember, I had explored #printmixing with the black and white: tiger print cardigan, geo print skirt, and houndstooth d'orsay pumps). . . In today's post, I shall answer that question in exactly the same way I did last week: NO! . . In the past, erring on the side of caution, I would conservatively mix prints; but today, all style rules get thrown out the window, and I mix 5-black & white prints: plaid (hat), floral (blouse), stripes (skirt), polka dot (bag), and houndstooth (pumps). . . Confession: I've had this skirt and top since last year (a testiment about purchasing timeless prints), but hesitated to pair them because the white in the blouse wasn't the same shade as the background of the skirt. Throwing caution to the wind, I decided to try them, and I loved the result! . . Although I love prints, I've love ruffles (fruffles -my word) just a little bit longer; when the wind blew or I lifted my arms, the cascading ruffles gave my outfit such a playful feel, it instantly lifted my mood. #twowaystowear Tuesday, and I'm giving you two ideas for a plaid blazer (blue). . . Blazers are having a moment, and over the past few seasons, plaid blazers have really come into their own. . . In keeping with my #printmixing series, the first look, is the blazer and skirt worn together as a suit. Wondering how to update your blazer style? Belt it with a sleek, leather #fannypack. A striped tie-neck blouse add visual interest to the suit, while white patent booties complete the ensemble. . . In the second way to wear a plaid blazer (that comes with a skirt or one you've found by itself), try pairing it with another plaid piece in a similar hues (in this case, both the blazer and the pant have black, white and blue details). . . Feeling adventurous? Try adding another print or two, like a blouse in a foulard print and/or scarf in a floral design. I intentionally chose smaller prints as not to detract from the plaid pieces. . . Styling Tip: I belted the blazer in this look, because I didn't want my waist to get lost beneath the bulky, bomber jacket. . . Color Wheel Tip: If you're ever stuck with which color to pair with a particular piece, go back to the color wheel! With the various shades of blue in the outfit, I went with a green jacket (blue and green are analogous colors); I specifically chose the olive shade because the deeper tones are a sophisticated choice to your color palette. . . Trend Alert: When looking to buy a blazer, the boxier the better! Think 80s-style: padded shoulders and an oversized silhouette. Try it with biker shorts and sneakers for a on trend day look, or pair it with a slip dress and floss sandals for an effortlessly chic evening look. . .
