You ever think about the Arcade scene post fight and how Riz was 100% acting on emotion with Biz when he came back. Riz Gukgak, known closed book, went absolutely off on Biz because more than anything else he saw Penny again, he spoke to Penny again. Solving the case had always been about finding Penny for Riz and with seeing her again the emotions he’d been using the case to essentially not process came to the surface. So to be so close only to watch her disappear in front of him, no surprise he went ballistic.

He came out of that palemsest, hands bleeding from cuts that would scar and never truly leave him, and immediately dropped into “What happens to the girls” and threatening the one person with the information because he needs to know how badly he failed. If he’s to late. If this is all beyond hope. If this is going to be avenging Penny rather then helping to save her.

I think people overestimate just how professional Penny's babysitting role with Riz was. Because Riz says she was babysitting him till he was 13, and he's 14 at the start of the show. Penny is 18 now, as a senior, and Riz is 16 turning 17 as a junior. In the same sentence he confirms that she's his only friend despite repeatedly trying to be social with the kids at school. I'm... pretty sure Sklonda entirely just hired Penny to be Riz's friend, and neither of them ever figured it out because they're on the same nerd wavelength and Sklonda framing it as a job immediately worked on both of them.
