Devil May Cry [PS2, 2001, US]

My favorite thing about Devil May Cry is that it only exists because Capcom was trying to make Resident Evil 4 and ended up with this, then they decided to make it its own game because of how unlike Resident Evil it was.
Now it is closer to a Resident Evil game than any Resident Evil since 4 has been. Too much irony to handle.

I was really looking forward to playing this again. It has been at least a decade since the last time I picked it up. I was pretty curious to see how it holds up.

Devil May Cry really turned up the dial on the hack-and-slash formula. It was the first 3D game to really capture what made the old school Golden Axe-era of the genre so great.

This is how r/MensRights views women.

Along with the stylishness, this is also a delightfully bloody game. Beyond that, a lot of the innovations it brought to this genre that are still seen to this day. Now I could point out the fact that there are still games that are essentially clones of this coming out 12 years later and how that shines a worrying light on the current state of the game industry but hey, we are all here to have fun and be positive right?

Isn’t that Blind Guardian’s newest album?

That is exactly how I wanted the entrance to my bedroom to look when I went through my goth stage.

The boss battles are all really interesting as well, with many being over-the-top large in scale. Most do boil down to “exploit weakness, dodge everything else” but when you really think about it, what else is there to a good boss battle?

This updated version of Winnie the Pooh went a really dark route with Owl.

The Nightwing signal?

The graphics are also a stand out, with most of the battles and their various levels of carnage being very nice to look at. All of the backgrounds are given the same loving pseudo-photo realistic touch that we had come to expect from Capcom’s Resident Evil.

Next time on “Fullmetal Alchemist: Mahō Robottoshefu Sūpāsutā!” Episode 69, “Conquering the Breakfast Service.”

Yus.

Gotta admit, that totally bums me out too.

Devil May Cry is an incredibly cinematic game as well, which makes everything very engaging The downside is that, since this was 2001, there are some camera and control issues that crop up around the edges of the game.

The biggest problem with Devil May Cry is that it suffers from some outrageously bad voice acting and dialog. In fact, the entire plot of this first DMC game is just an afterthought full of contrived conveniences and half-assed heel-face-face-heel turns of characters that we barely have the most basic reasons to care about. This is actually why I found the massive backlash against the new DmC game and its 2EDGY embarrassing dialog to be so weird. Like, I completely agree that it is way too “90s Comic Book” for the current climate of gaming, but to say that it somehow betrays the Devil May Cry name for being corny?
Come on.

A air vehicle flying away from a huge explosion?
This really was supposed to be a Resident Evil game.

Team Oedipus Complex is on the case.

Still more relevant than the Queen of England.
Essentially, this is the game that revolutionized the hack-and-slash genre while dragging it into the current era of gaming. The influence of the original Devil May Cry is still seen heavily in games that are coming out right now, which is impressive. Even the laughably terrible story elements and dialog can’t weigh things down too much.
So yeah, I guess it holds up pretty well.
AMAZING

My characterization is MINE and MINE alone. This is who I see my character as being. I created these headcanons and I saw different things in my muse than other people who play the same muse so please —
