Go Ask Ronnie

Since this month got away from me (in a good way!), I started my monthly drabbles later than I normally do. I'm posting a 5 (drabbles) +1 (drabble) for August, featuring Ronnie Lee. @schittscreekdrabblechallenge @a-noble-dragon

Jocelyn (Baritone)

“I don’t know, Jocelyn. I’m not much a singer…” Ronnie leaned up against the counter and ordered her lunch to-go. Twyla said it would take a few more minutes. 

“We both know that’s not true. Please, Ronnie. I heard you singing at the end of summer party Ray hosted last week. And, I really need a baritone for one of the songs I’ve chosen for the medley I have the Jazzagals singing in next month,” Jocelyn pleaded. “I promise you’ll have fun!”

“What the hell. I’ll do it.”

“Thank you! We have practice Tuesday and Thursday nights!”

“Count me in.”

Roland (Pitcher)

“I know you’re not feeling all that great, but I really need you to pitch tonight,” Roland called out through Ronnie’s closed door. She opened it a crack, covered her nose and mouth, and sneezed. Her eyes were red and puffy from her allergies acting up. 

“You’ve got to be kidding.”

“I wish I was. But even on your worst day, you are the best pitcher I know. Plus, I can't lose to the Elmdale Emeralds.”

“That’s who we’re playing tonight? Oh, hell no!!” 

“That’s what I wanted to hear!”

“Don’t you worry about a thing, Roland. I’ll be ready.”

Bob (Construction)

Ronnie wiped her hands on her jeans and joined Bob in his cabin’s kitchen. “How did this happen again?”

“You know the Roses, right?” Ronnie nodded. “Well, Johnny apparently is not good with directions. He thought he and the missus were at Roland’s cabin, when in reality they came to mine and Gwen’s.”

“Bob, Bob, Bob. I know that part. What I don’t know is why I am giving you a construction quote to fix this broken window.” 

“They didn’t have a key.”

“So they busted your window to get in?”

“They sure did.”

“I’m sending the bill to Johnny.”

Alexis (Favorite Quote: “You know what I mean, string bean?”)

Ronnie looked up from her paperwork when she heard the clickity-clack approach her desk. “Forget something?” Alexis sat down and twirled her hair. 

“You said Mutt worked some extra hours? Maybe he saved up time to, like, cash in later or something?”

“What do you think this is? A bank?” Ronnie tapped her pen. “Maybe, if you think really hard, I bet you could figure out why.”

“He has nothing to offer me…”

“You sure about that? All I’m saying is that if you think just a little harder about these last few weeks, you may realize that he did.”

Moira (I’m doing this for David)

“Veronica? Could I perhaps steal a moment of your time?”

“I’m kind of busy putting together a list of affordable contractors, painters, and plumbers here, Moira.” 

“It will only take a moment. I need someone I can depend on, well, what I’m trying to ask of you, because I trust you-”

“Spit it out! What?”

“Will you keep an eye on my David after we vacate this village?”

“Who do you think this list is for? That cottage is going to need lots of work. I’m doing this for David. Of course, I’ll look out for him.”

“Thank you, Ronnie.”

“Oh! Hi, Ronnie!” Patrick said when he saw Ronnie enter the store.

“Is David here?” 

“He’s off. Is there, uh, something I can help you with?” Ronnie rolled her eyes and folded her arms across her chest. 

“I need a wine to pair with some of that blue cheese I bought from David yesterday.”

“Okay. Um, how about a Port or Riesling? The Port is a fortified wine that will balance the strong flavors of the cheese, whereas a sweet Riesling will enhance the cheese’s tanginess. I. personally like the Port.” Ronnie pursed her lips. 

“Give me the Port, please.”

Calling friends of @schittscreekdrabblechallenge I would appreciate it if anyone has any suggestions for single word prompts for the following SC characters:

Twyla, Ray, Jocelyn, Mutt, Roland, Jake, Bob, and Wendy.

I’m only 2 or 3 short for most of the above, all except Mutt - who only has 4 prompts atm lol

One of the girls I work with is going on maternity leave. Wednesday was her last day, and she brought a few of us flowers to thank us for all we've done to help make the last few weeks as easy as we could for her.

The roses opened up immediately, and are so beautiful.

“Alexis?” Alexis recognized the face, but could not place his name.

“It's me, Citrus!”

“Oh, my God! Citrus! Yes! How are you? You didn't track me down, or anything, right? I’m pretty sure I gave everything back after I left…” Citrus laughed. 

“No, I’m not after you. I'm here for an Elevation conference and saw you from across the lobby. But. If you are interested, we are offering unbelievable bonuses for every new recruit you sign up!” Alexis backed away. 

“Wow! That sounds, um, that sounds, like amazing! It's just that, um, I'm good, thanks. It was great seeing you!”

“Oh, my God! You kept this? I thought you got rid of this years ago!” David picked up the pink helmet Mutt gave Alexis to go with the bike.

“Um, yeah! Of course I kept it. Why wouldn't I?”

“Well, for starters you don't even have that bike anymore, and two, I thought you hated everything about it!”

“Maybe I did. I found it when I was packing up after the wedding.”

“And?”

“I realized it was the first gift I received that anyone thought about my needs, and not my wants. Does that make sense?”

“Yes. Yes, it does.”

He's learnt this to his detriment over the years. 

Upside of a Letdown by @beaiola With his blind date a no show, David is annoyed to find he's wasted his night at an out-of-the-way little bar with regrettable decor. At least the music's good. And maybe the musician can help turn David's bad night around...

A Little Bit Alexis

Alexis had the entire row to herself. She couldn't remember the last time that happened where she didn't fly first class.

Using the plane’s free WiFi, she scrolled through the list of shows to find something to watch. She froze when she saw the entire first and only season of A Little Bit Alexis listed. She hesitantly clicked on the first episode. 

After only ten minutes, she stopped the episode. She didn't recognize that self-centered girl on the screen. 

She knew she was a better person now, and was on her way to do some great things with her life.

“I’m sure they can fix it.”

“I called them this morning, Twy. They said since it’s a certificate and not a diploma, no one cares, so it’s not a big deal.” 

“Hi Patrick! Give me a minute, okay?”

“What’s going on? Whatever it is I’m sure it’s not the end of the world.”

“My business certificate has a misspelling, and the stupid college won’t do anything about it.”

“Can I see?” Alexis pulled out the folded piece of paper.

“That’s unfortunate. I can fix it.”

“You can?”

“I can.”

The next day Patrick handed Alexis her corrected Public Relations certificate.

Girl Boss

Alexis opened the package and sat down. 

She knows she made the right choice. 

After hours of trying to decide out what her business cards should say, she still wasn’t sure if ARC was the best choice.

She pulled out one card, ran her fingers along the gold, embossed lettering, and smiled. 

After seeing it actually in print, centered on the card, she absolutely loved the way it turned out. The card looked like it was promoting a legitimate business, because it was a legitimate business. 

Alexis Rose Communications. ARC.  

At that moment, Alexis Rose became Alexis Rose, Girl Boss.

Taking Charge

Patrick sat in his car in the driveway of the cottage he and David drove by last week. 

They really had not talked about where they were going to live after the wedding. Everyone just assumed David would move into the apartment until they had a plan of what to do next. 

The way his eyes lit up as Patrick drove by convinced him he had to at least try. 

I’m a take charge guy. 

The front door opened and an older couple stepped out, smiled, and waved. 

I can do this. 

“Hello! I’m Patrick Brewer. This may sound crazy…”

Patrick finished his hike, found a rock to sit down on, and took a deep breath in, allowing the cool air to fill his lungs. He closed his eyes, exhaled, and felt a calm he had never felt before. 

Suddenly, it became so clear. 

He felt no dread, no anxiety, and no preconceived notions of what was expected of him. 

The love he felt for David was so overpowering, some days he literally had to pinch himself to prove he was living in reality and not in a dream. 

He had never felt so sure about something his entire life.
