Let us save what remains: not by vaults and locks which fence them from the public eye and use in consigning them to the waste of time, but by such a multiplication of copies, as shall place them beyond the reach of accident.

May Day is almost upon us, and oh what fun we will have!
May 1st is an important day in history,  it’s the official birthday of the dwarf planet Pluto, it is the anniversary of the launch of the Lusitania, and it is International Workers’ Day. In addition to these historic events, May 1st is important to archives and cultural repositories as a day of disaster planning, and organization known as May Day. May Day is a time when archivists and other cultural heritage professionals take personal and professional responsibility for doing something simple – something that can be accomplished in a day but that can have a significant impact on an individual’s or a repository’s ability to respond. We here at UACU take this very seriously, and so we will have a slew of activities and events. Please stay tuned for further developments.
We have several events, planned, take a look at some of them, by clicking here.
Take a look at some May Day Resources, by clicking here.
Take a look at some May Day Quick Tips, by clicking here. You will be thankful you did.
May 1st is a day to save our archives, let’s get to work!

The Library of Congress has just released an amazing new video on their digital preservation efforts for their Packard Campus in Culpeper Virginia. The video highlights some of the new techniques used, the types of material preserved, and the expectations for the future. What an inspiration!

Check out this video from our friends at NARA about their digitization program. Digitization plays an important role in preservation–not only does it extend the life span of our records, it extends access to the records to anyone with an internet connection!

An interesting video I found on the subject of preservation from an archival perspective. It’s an inside peek at the preservation labs of the National Archives and Records Administration.
