PROFILE

APPEARANCE

OMORI is a young boy who wears a black tank top, long black socks, and black and white striped shorts. He is the only character to be colored black and white in contrast with the colorful residents of HEADSPACE, and he is also the only character to have blank eyes with no pupils. His overall design stems from SUNNY's twelve-year-old appearance.

PERSONALITY

Not much can be said about OMORI's personality, as he is a silent protagonist. However, it is implied that he is quite melancholic, as his narration sometimes has gloomy inputs, the overall tone left by the summary, and his final battle dialogue is directly talking down to SUNNY. His abilities are also reflective of this gloominess, being either violent in nature or simply gaining the SAD emotion, or having an advantage while SAD. However, it can be speculated that this is moreso reflective of SUNNY's emotional state, as OMORI is a character built from SUNNY'S conscience in WHITE SPACE and HEADSPACE.

STORY

BACKGROUND

Sunny's first encounter with Omori in White Space.

At some point following MARI's death, SUNNYbegan visiting WHITE SPACE through a black-and-white doppelgänger called OMORI. WHITE SPACE is born out of SUNNY's cognition whenever he sleeps, so its contents are subjective from his memories and perceptions. OMORI's existence started as a sort of "shell" for SUNNY to protect himself from the horrors of the truth, which took the form of SOMETHING and BLACK SPACE.

Inside WHITE SPACE, OMORI can freely visit an imaginary world where his friends reside along with comical representations of acquaintances and familiar fictional mascots. WHITE SPACE serves as an escape from the truth behind MARI's untimely demise. To this end, SUNNY's OMORI is routinely inside WHITE SPACE, as SUNNY has been a shut-in since MARI's death and all of the interactions we seen within HEADSPACE come with a sense of great familiarity from the characters that reside within.

Eventually, BLACK SPACE encroaches on HEADSPACE, and repressing the resurfacing memories requires HEADSPACE to be reset -- which has been done several times over, only serving as a stopgap measure. As SUNNY's repression grew stronger and HEADSPACE continued to change, OMORI continued to change too, and eventually became something more than what his creator originally intended.

Years of repressing the truth resulted in OMORI becoming the very image of suicidal guilt and depression that SUNNY denies, essentially making him less of an alter ego. He becomes more of a culmination of the repression of trauma and escapism that SUNNY has done over his past four years as a hikikomori. By the time of the game's events, OMORI behaves autonomously and begins to influence SUNNY instead of the other way around; however, his goal is still the same: to protect SUNNY from the truth.

SUNNY ROUTE

Omori attempts to force Sunny to succumb to his guilt and trauma.

While OMORI and WHITE SPACE serve only to repress SOMETHING, OMORI begins acting more hostile towards SUNNY as he gets closer to the truth regarding MARI's death within BLACK SPACE. This culminates in OMORI turning against SUNNY once he kills DW BASIL by stabbing him in RED SPACE. Knowing that his original self has chosen to confront the truth, OMORI intends to "save" SUNNY from his guilt once and for all, even if it meant making the latter cease to exist.

Following his ill-fated fight with BASIL on the final night, landing in the hospital, and after reliving his favorite moments through MEMORY LANE, SUNNY finds himself within WHITE SPACE again. OMORI fights SUNNY in a final attempt to protect him from the truth, and presumably for control of his mind and body. There are two possible endings depending on if one of the two options is chosen upon losing to OMORI the first time around:

Omori accepts defeat, fading away in Sunny's arms.

GOOD ENDING: If SUNNY chooses to continue, he performs the duet recital with MARI, remembering the good times he's spent with MARI and his friends during his youth. OMORI accepts defeat and embraces SUNNY with a hug, vanishing from WHITE SPACE. SUNNY then leaves HEADSPACE for good and awakens in the hospital, finally coming to terms with MARI's death. This allows SUNNY to overcome his guilt over his past actions and confess the truth behind MARI's death to his friends.

BAD ENDING: If SUNNY chooses not to continue, he will instead disappear as OMORI presumably takes control of him completely. From there, OMORI wakes up in WHITE SPACE once again. When he enters NEIGHBOR'S ROOM, all of his friends appear strangely silent. They head out for more adventuring but the scene cuts over to SUNNY standing on the hospital's balcony alone. Unable to accept the truth, SUNNY jumps off the building and plummets to his presumed death.

OMORI ROUTE

Omori "saves" Sunny from his self-hatred and guilt.

In this route, things change as SUNNY represses more memories of MARI's death as he chooses to shut himself away even more than before. By the time OMORI arrives in BLACK SPACE, he slowly begins to take over SUNNY's mind and body. However, STRANGER attempts to stop SUNNY from submerging himself further into his dream world of escapism. SUNNY tries to fight off STRANGER but fails as the shadowy figure overwhelms him, leading him to be transported into RED SPACE, where OMORI awaits him on his throne of hands.

From there, OMORI descends from his throne and helps SUNNY withstand STRANGER's wrath. However, upon confronting the STRANGER, it appears that he has given up on trying to convince SUNNY to stop his unhealthy coping mechanism. OMORI is then warped back to BLACK SPACE by a RED HAND, allowing him to rescue BASIL in the CHURCH OF SOMETHING. The two friends leave BLACK SPACE and return to NEIGHBOR'S BEDROOM, where all their friends are sleeping in their beds.

Once OMORI and BASIL fall asleep, as instructed by the BIG YELLOW CAT, this results in a soft reset for all of HEADSPACE. This leads to a repeat of the first few minutes of the game with a few changes: BASIL appears to have never discovered the truth, more areas are expanded, and more optional sidequests are available for OMORI and friends to complete.

SUNNY eventually wakes up, only to find SOMETHING following him at every step of his house. Being unable to suppress SOMETHING's presence, SUNNY succumbs further into his self-hatred and guilt as he finishes his remaining chores. By the time SUNNY falls back asleep, he ends up overwhelmed by the traumatic memories of his past, and can no longer repress them any further.

OMORI then decides to "save" SUNNY from being fully consumed by his trauma by merging with him. Upon doing so, OMORI assumes complete control over SUNNY's mind and body, causing the latter to cease to exist. From this point on, SUNNY resigns himself to an endless cycle of dreaming forever within HEADSPACE via escapism and full repression of the truth. However, he is unable to face the truth nor reconnect with his friends ever again. After waking up once more, only the NEUTRAL ENDINGS can be obtained from this point on.

NEUTRAL ENDINGS

If SUNNY chooses to GO TO SLEEP in BASIL'S HOUSE after regaining his memories of the truth, the following events will occur. Upon awakening once more, SUNNY finds himself all alone. He heads to the hallway, only to find his friends and POLLY in the hallway, distraught over BASIL's suicide. Opening BASIL's door reveals his corpse slumped against the wall with a large hole in his abdomen represented by SOMETHING. The only option will then be to return home, as the rest of the game will play out depending on if SUNNY picks up the knife or not before going to sleep.

ABANDON ENDING: If SUNNY chooses to resume sleeping in his own bed, this will lead to a repeat of the WHITE SPACE intro scene from the start of the game. OMORI appears in WHITE SPACE as normal, but there is no door to HEADSPACE and the light bulb is still missing. All OMORI can do is STAB himself to wake SUNNY up. SUNNY silently meets his MOM in her car while SOMETHING follows him, leaving his distraught friends behind with no answers. Police sirens play over the credits.

KNIFE ENDING: If SUNNY picks up the knife on the kitchen counter before heading to bed, using the STAB option in WHITE SPACE as OMORI will cause the resulting effects to impact SUNNY's physical body. SUNNY's answering machine continuously rings as he lays on his bed, clutching a knife into his bleeding chest. The ringing of a phone that will never again be answered plays over the credits. An alternate knife ending takes place if you choose to stab after waking up on moving day.

PROFILE

APPEARANCE

In HEADSPACE, AUBREY wears a light blue nightgown and a pink bow in her long dark hair. Like the other party members, she does not wear socks or shoes, and her hair and eyes are a dreamlike mix of purple and blue. She also carries around a STUFFED TOY known as MR. PLANTEGG.

In the real world, AUBREY naturally has dark brown hair and eyes, but she has dyed her hair pink and wears teal contacts. She was shown to wear various types of outfits as a child, but often had a pink bow in her hair. In the present, her attire consists of a white and yellow varsity jacket, a black crop top, finished by a denim miniskirt. She also accessorizes a bright teal hair bow that used to be MARI's. She is often seen wielding her NAIL BAT.

PERSONALITY

During her youth, AUBREY is very cheerful and always happy to play with her friends. Strong-willed and always acting true to her feelings, AUBREY serves as a constant source of morale for her friends.[3] This extends to often reminding the group of the right thing to do whenever they are distracted.[4][5] Despite this, she becomes sad and worried quite easy; she is the most anxious one of the friend group when BASILgoes missing.[6][7][8] Often she is clumsy, resulting in yelling from KEL, who she always fights with. Her childhood traits are shared with her HEADSPACE counterpart, albeit slightly different with her puppy love persona towards OMORI.

In the REAL WORLD, after finding out about MARI's death, she began coping through strong feelings of hatred against her old friend group, interpreting their reactions as them moving on too quickly.[9] She felt burdened by a sense of loneliness, given both the death of her best friend as well as the lack of support between her and her friends. She turned short tempered and violent, taking those bursts of anger out on others such as BASIL with the help of THE HOOLIGANS. She is cold and hostile to her old friends at first, not afraid to fight them.[10] Even so, she is still trying to find peace by praying at the local church,[11] and visits MARI's grave often.

She also seems to be bit of a tomboy aswell, more so in the present.

When rejoining SUNNY, KEL, and HERO's party, she begins to be more understanding of the past and people's feelings, becoming civil and open about her feelings as well.[12][13][14] She is shown expressing care for SUNNY's physical health and apologizes to BASIL.[15][16] It is shown through the text during the sleepover at BASIL'S HOUSEthat despite having trouble admitting that she cares, AUBREY's actions have shown her true disposition of looking out for her friends. Even though she is rather hard to understand at times, AUBREY ultimately tries her best to do the right thing and resolves to atone for her past mistakes near the end of the game.[17]

STORY

BACKGROUND

Aubrey meets her friends for the first time.

AUBREY was born to her unnamed mother and father the same year as SUNNY and BASIL. She lived with her parents at their house, though it is suggested that they may have lived in squalor. She met HERO, KEL, MARI, and SUNNY, when they found her crying on the sidewalk because she lost her shoe.[18] The group all became friends and, later on, she introduced BASIL to the group.[19]

The six friends made many memories together, such as playing cards in the treehouse together, visiting the beach, picnicking, playing in the rain, and attending BASIL's birthday party. AUBREY and BASIL sold cookies and lemonade in the summer to save up money and, for Christmas, she along with the rest of the group pooled their money to get SUNNY an expensive violin.

On the day of SUNNY and MARI's recital, AUBREY and her dad were getting ready for the two siblings' performance. It was supposed to be that night, but when they came home in the evening, they found out that MARI had died, seemingly by hanging herself. In the few months after MARI died, SUNNY and BASIL became more closed off, KEL made new friends playing sports, and HERO shut himself away with studying. She was angry at how life kept moving on and felt like everyone abandoned her and MARI.

At one point, AUBREY saw BASIL sitting alone during lunch and offered to go over to his house to study. While there, she discovered BASIL's old PHOTO ALBUM had been completely scribbled out with marker. Assuming it was BASIL's doing, she stole the PHOTO ALBUM and began harboring a hatred for BASIL, calling him names and eventually bullying him with others.

She dyed her hair pink as a memorial to a promise she and MARI had made[20] and made friends with KIM and her group of delinquents, THE HOOLIGANS, always carrying a nail bat. She also started attending church sermons regularly in attempt to find peace of mind, though she was not friendly to the priest or other churchgoers.

THREE DAYS LEFT

Aubrey confronts Sunny and Kel.

KEL and SUNNY can first encounter AUBREY and the rest of THE HOOLIGANS riding their scooters down the lower street in FARAWAY. Later, when they see BASIL in FARAWAY PARK pleading with KIM, KEL gets involved as he sticks up for BASIL. This causes a commotion that draws the attention of AUBREY and the other HOOLIGANS. AUBREY takes SUNNY and KEL's defense of BASIL as a threat and starts a fight, but the HOOLIGANS flee after noticing SUNNY is armed with a knife (potentially after SUNNY attacked her with it, depending on the actions the player took).

Upon learning that AUBREY stole BASIL's PHOTO ALBUM afterwards, SUNNY and KEL head off to interrogate the HOOLIGANS for AUBREY's whereabouts. SUNNY and KEL go about FARAWAY TOWN, questioning and fighting with each member of the HOOLIGANS before eventually being told that AUBREY is at the CHURCH. SUNNY and KEL enter during the sermon and sit in the pew behind her, trying to ask her to give back the PHOTO ALBUM, which leads to a heated argument. AUBREY repeatedly questions why they are coming back into her life, as she wants to keep her distance from them.

Realizing that there is no point explaining her reasons to KEL, AUBREY fights them both once again. The fight ends as the church attendants around them gossip about her delinquent behavior and her broken family, which causes a tearful AUBREY to run off. She throws out the PHOTO ALBUM upon returning home, though she keeps all pictures containing MARI.

TWO DAYS LEFT

The next day, AUBREY and THE HOOLIGANS are seen eating pizza at GINO'S, with AUBREY ignoring SUNNY and KEL's presence. She later heads over to her old friends' HANGOUT SPOT and finds BASIL there as well for unknown reasons. The HOOLIGANS attempt to force BASIL to leave but this leads to the latter to cry out for help. SUNNY and KEL arrive at the spot, and KEL attempts to stop them just as before.

Aubrey attempts to beat down her former friends with her gang, THE HOOLIGANS, backing her up.

AUBREY engages in another fight with the two, this time with all the HOOLIGANS backing her up. Whether the fight is won or lost, things eventually settle down and the other HOOLIGANS leave. KEL points out to AUBREY that even though she spends more time with her new friends, she still comes over to the old hangout spot, meaning she must still care about her old friends. This causes AUBREY to back down in silence before breaking down and letting out a frustrated scream, questioning why her old friends keep coming back into her life. BASIL tries to talk to her but this only results in AUBREY accidentally shoving him right into the lake.

AUBREY immediately regrets her action and panics as KEL yells at her for harming BASIL. KEL tells SUNNY to dive in to save him, but SUNNY is not able to fully rescue BASIL. HERO, having just come back from college, manages to arrive at the HANGOUT SPOT in the nick of time, saving both SUNNY and BASIL. Once SUNNY regains consciousness, the boys decide to take BASIL back to his home for recovery. AUBREY demands to know where they are all going, to which KEL bluntly tells her she has already done enough harm. As the group leaves, AUBREY is left alone once again.

ONE DAY LEFT

Sunny, Kel, Aubrey, and Hero reconcile and share a group hug together.

On the final day, AUBREY's best friend, KIM, knocks at SUNNY's door to ask them to go check on AUBREY, because she is upset and will not come out of her house. All the HOOLIGANS are outside AUBREY's house and are genuinely worried about her. The party enters her unlocked door to discover the dire circumstances of her house: trash scattered all over, the building in disrepair, and her mother completely unresponsive while fixated on the TV.

They enter her room and she yells at them for intruding, but HERO finally gets her to talk and have a heart-to-heart. AUBREY apologizes to everyone for being "such a jerk", and KEL apologizes in turn. The group also find the PHOTO ALBUM's missing photos of MARI on her corkboard, with AUBREY mentioning that she took them because "it's all I have left of her." With the album complete, AUBREY rejoins the party.

The reunited friends first attempt to visit BASIL'S HOUSE to check on him, only to find out from POLLY that BASIL is visiting his grandmother at the hospital. AUBREY and her friends decide to check on BASIL later, spending the rest of their day hanging out, while reminiscing the past at some spots in town before visiting their old treehouse.

Upon entering the treehouse, AUBREY finds her old stuffed plush MR. PLANTEGG in a deteriorated state while SUNNY collects the key for his abandoned toy box. She later leaves her pink pinwheel in the stump of the tree where MARI was hung and opens up to everyone about her feelings. She apologizes for blaming them and starts to come to terms with the past. She also reveals the reason as to why she was mad at BASIL (the scribbled photo album). The four friends then reconcile for real and share a big group hug together.

The group heads over to BASIL's house to comfort him only to find he has locked himself away in his room, unresponsive. Despite this, AUBREY apologizes sincerely to him through the door, letting him know that she and the others are there for him. They all eventually decide to stay over for the night to celebrate SUNNY's last day at FARAWAY TOWN, as well as be there for BASIL. Before falling asleep in the living room, HERO, KEL, and AUBREY tell SUNNY that life will soon get better even after he moves out, and they will all keep in touch. The group then falls asleep.

MOVING DAY

NEUTRAL ENDINGS

After remembering the truth, if SUNNY chooses to go back to sleep instead of confronting and saving BASIL, this will lead to another tragedy as BASIL succeeds in killing himself. This leaves the entire friend group and POLLY in complete despair upon discovering BASIL's corpse. AUBREY is shown on her knees with an empty expression and tears streaming down her face, blaming herself over tormenting BASIL for the past four years. When spoken to, AUBREY pleads BASIL for forgiveness. SUNNY leaves his distraught friends behind with no answers regarding the truth behind MARI's death.

GOOD ENDING

If SUNNY instead chooses to confront BASIL, the friend group's peaceful sleepover is interrupted by the two boys fighting, with SUNNY trying to resist BASIL's disastrous attempt to save him. Both SUNNY and BASIL fall unconscious during the outcome of the fight and are rushed to the hospital in an ambulance, presumably called by AUBREY and her friends.

After a climactic struggle against OMORI within his mind, SUNNY awakens in his hospital bed crying with a bandage over his right eye, finally coming to terms with MARI's death. He then limps out of his room and envisions his HEADSPACE friends and STRANGER for the final time as he heads toward BASIL's hospital room.

From there, AUBREY can be seen standing beside BASIL's hospital bed alongside KEL and HERO. The group then notices SUNNY standing at the doorway, ready to tell them what truly happened when MARI died. The friends' reactions are left to the player's imagination as the game cuts to the credits.
