A Participant’s Perspective
One community member I encouraged to practice mindful walking said this after trying it: “It was pretty peaceful. I felt very relaxed. But I sort of also felt like I was walking to my death, so that was pretty weird.” -M-C.W.

First time
“I didn’t know what mindful walking was, or the purpose of it until I tried it recently. While at home, I focused my feet touching the carpet with every move. It really gets my mind off of other things, and it was quite an experience! I don’t know if I’ll try this again, but the other mindful activities are definitely something I plan on doing again!” -Natasha Kumar

Anitha Mohan says:
“Usually I just eat without thinking since I’m constantly running around. But after doing this mindfulness challenge, I realized that I wish I could eat mindfully all the time. I tried this piece of Ghirardelli chocolate, slowly opened the wrapper, and took my time finishing it rather than what I usually do, which is the opposite. Doing these mindfulness for the past two weeks has made a difference in my life, even if it was only for a couple of minutes!”

Megha Patel says:
“At first, I didn’t know what mindful coloring was. After I learned more about it, I decided to try it out! I made this in about 2 hours by coloring mindfully and honestly, it was probably the most relaxing two hours I’ve had in a while. At first, it was hard to not focus on other things in my head, but after a while, I was only focusing on my drawing! And, I think I did a pretty good job at this.”

Check out this website all about mindful eating! Mindful eating can help us become more aware and conscious of what we are eating and our reactions toward the food we are eating. Next time you’re having a snack try to focus your mind on what you are doing in that moment, and let all other thoughts drift away!

Mindful Coloring
Here’s what some volunteers had to say about their mindful coloring experience!
Was it hard for you to be mindful? Why?
“At the beginning it was very hard because I get really distracted and it was hard to take it seriously at first.”
Did it make the experience more enjoyable?
“I think so because I was able to fully focus on what I was doing so I enjoyed it more because my mind was calm and not distracted.”
Would you practice mindfulness in the future?
“Yes!”

Getting Started with Meditation
https://beingwithoutself.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/basicsofzenpracticejustbeone.pdf
Here is a good article to get started with meditation. The main idea is to focus on one thing rather than having a divided mind. In this meditation practice the thing you focus all of your attention on is your breath. Mindfulness is all about completely focusing on the task you are doing. For example, when you are eating mindfully, you want to give all of your attention to the process of eating without allowing your mind to drag your attention away.

This week we are talking about coloring. Did you know that adults (not just toddlers) everywhere are sitting down at the end of the day with colored pencils and white pages as a form of unwinding? The practice is mindful coloring, and here is a Huffington Post article that explains how trendy this mindfulness exercise is becoming:
http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2014/10/07/colouring-books-for-adults-stress_n_5944298.html
The picture above was done by a participant of our meditation project. This picture shows that you can color anything and make it mindful as long as you focus and put effort into the meditative process of it. The participant said that once she got started coloring, it relaxed her and she found it easy to devote time only focusing on what she was coloring.
So this week, grab some crayons and start being mindful!
