While I’m unable to properly comment on More’s work, I am finding this entire discussion absolutely fascinating. Many of the points @urbanspectator brings up several points that seem to hit home for me, while @autumnslance’s idea of the Ancients bringing about their own downfall is equally intriguing.
After all, why look outside for the root cause of their issues when it could so easily be caused from within?
It’s constantly driven in by the Amaurotines that their massive personal aether allows them to essentially create anything, but anything considered dangerous is simply locked away/confiscated to keep such dangerous creations from spreading. Easy in thought and idea... but there is a simple matter to consider.
Once someone makes something, they can simply make it again.
There’s also the fat that it is within an intellectual and an artist’s mindset to share the fruits of their labor with others. Whether they be commissions or things that need to be vetted by a government body, there will always be those close friends and loved ones who will experience an artist’s new works before all others. Case in point, the Amaurotine who wishes to share a new idea for a child’s plaything that turns out to be dangerous monsters. (The ironic thing? If the Warrior of Balance had been a proper Amaurotine child, they could have treated them as such. But I digress.)
So, someone decides ‘Hey, I want to make a horrible chimerical creature. Cause I can’ and proceeds to do so. Upon completion, even knowing it will get locked away, they would share their fruit of their frightening imagination with others, which would be met with either ‘GODS! Why would you MAKE such a thing?!’ or ‘This again? What is it with you and scythe tentacles?’. After feeling properly appreciated for their work, they would then bring it to the Offices and await the inevitable confiscation of their work, already coming up with ways to make it more amusing. After all, it’s only a thought process. One man’s nightmares are another man’s dreams, or something like that.
And at least in human nature, it’s natural to share things that are scary and interesting with other friends and acquaintances. ‘Hey, did you hear what Bob made last week? Two words. Scythe tentacles.’ Some will explain it in ways that folks will imagine it, others will share an image.. either way, the idea spreads and delves into the psyche. Sometimes it is forgotten.. other times it lingers.
What am I getting at? There’s no way to erase the horrors created by this friend from the memories of others. In this kind of society, that place that confiscated warped creations and ideas must have been filled to the brim and beyond. And since creation magic was apparently as easy as breathing for most Ancients, then it stands to reason that creations can end up going wildly out of control. Case in point, the Akademia. Another example is the Amaurotine who accidentallied a gryphon that flew away and they were looking for it as one would do a lost cat.
Perhaps the storage of so many ideas in the vault they secret away That Which Should Not Be Shared in Polite Society wasn’t thought through completely. Not meant for so many ideas, and all it needed was some manner of spark to cause all those ideas to manifest and swarm. Perhaps the folks there made regular sport of unleashing the ideas in full manifestation to see for themselves what sorts of things they can do and lost control. There is an outside possibility that someone or thing actually wants these nightmarish horrors to be released in order to alleviate the boredom of day to day society, but that doesn’t seem the type of thing that would destroy a whole world. A city? Sure, but not enough to break a planet.
And of course... there is yet another possibility. That the star already HAD a will... and it was pissed at the Ancients.
Which is all well and good, but it also begs the question of where the idea to create a giant god thing that turns all who summon it into its loyal minions even CAME from. I find it extremely hard to believe that if they made Zodiark, they had the feature which Tempered them built in. No, I honestly believe Zodiark and Hydaelyn were always there and part of the same coin, a being that was the Will of the Star. What the Ascians did was something far more sinister... they wanted to tame the Will for themselves by summoning it outright. The sacrifices made to do that were made through this world wide catastrophe of dark nightmares coming to life, each Ancient life snuffed out allowing them to collect the fallen one’s aether to empower the ritual and thus summon a piece of the Star’s Will in order to tame it, fearing they couldn’t handle the whole thing even with their full aetheric might and 75% of the world's populace sacrificed. Thus, the Will was sundered and they gained Zodiark... and in their hubris, were tempered by the overwhelming Darkness they unleashed.
In doing this, the original Will of the Star was unable to continue its wrath. It was unable to punish the Ancients.. but this was due to the Ascians culling the population in the first place.
Of course.. if Emet and Hythlodaeus are to be believed, the Warrior of Balance was originally the 14th Ancient in the Council of Fourteen and actively opposed the plan to tame the Will of the Star, thus leaving. Unable to prevent the calamity that occurred, I can only imagine that they went out of their way to try and contact the remaining Will of the Star.. or, missing a critical piece of itself, was reached out to by Hydaelyn. In either case, when the Council began wanting to make more sacrifices to try and call back their loved ones, Hydaelyn and their former comrade stepped in to deal with things.. but how that battle actually played out is beyond me at the moment and is not really part of the current discussion XD
Conversational field trips aside, after rambling for far too long I feel that their downfall was, indeed, the Ancients fault, that their lifestyle and drain on the planet’s aether angered the Will of the Star enough to create many natural disasters, or what Emet called ‘the Planet splitting apart’. In order to prevent this and tame teh Will, the Council basically started to unleash the dread creatures confisacted by the Government in a dual effort of gathering aether for sacrifice and to convince the survivors ‘it was the Will’s fault and we must tame it with your sacrifice!’. Hence, 75% of the population, all because the Ancients couldn’t really give up their lifestyle to make nice with the planet they lived on.
Amaurot Easter-eggs/Literary Reference
While in Amaurot, I was looking at the names of places, and realized they sounded distinctly Latin, and figured I’d look them up - so come with me now as I THROW WIDE THE GATES and speculate about what SE is saying about Amaurot.
Amaurot is the name of the capital city of a place called Utopia, in this book by the same (and many much longer) name(s): Utopia.
“A little, true book, both beneficial and enjoyable, about how things should be in the new island Utopia”) is a work of fiction and socio-political satire by Thomas More (1478–1535), written in Latin and published in 1516. The book is a frame narrative primarily depicting a fictional island society and its religious, social, and political customs. Many aspects of More’s description of Utopia are reminiscent of life in monasteries.
“More wrote this story to make a point about collectivism, whether in defense or as a criticism of.”
“He also says “When Raphael had finished his story, I was left thinking that quite a few of the laws and customs he had described as existing among the Utopians were really absurd.” This demonstrates that he realizes his world is bizarre, and wants others to realize how out of place it was in their society.”
Considering that this book’s ‘point’ is still being debated to this day, It’s not entirely easy to put a finger on why SE chose to reference this book - but I imagine it’s for the satirical approach to Utopia (which is technically part of Earth in the book). And when you think about it, the laws/ways in which the Amaurotines operate are quite…odd. It’s painted as this utopia - as this perfect place…and yet a convocation decides what creations are safe for public use. Everyone has to dress the same - or they might be jealous ( which also gives me Harrison Bergeron vibes - I read this in high school, and I’ve never forgotten it). With that said, the main character is one Raphael Hythlodaeus. That name is familiar, because -
He’s the Amaurotine you meet who is self-aware. With that said -
“Hythlodaeus means “dispenser of nonsense” surely implying that the whole of the Utopian text is ‘nonsense'”
I can’t say what the implication of that is, in the context of our Amaurot - does that mean all the knowledge this ‘ghost’ imparted to us was nonsense? Because in the book, the character’s first name is Raphael, which has an alternate implication.
“While Hythlodaeus may suggest his words are not to be trusted, Raphael meaning (in Hebrew) “God has healed” suggests that Raphael may be opening the eyes of the reader to what is true.”
And our Hythlodaeus seems like he’s trying to open our eyes. He talks about Ardbert’s soul. He talks about Emet - and we know he’s not full of crap because the camera cuts to Emet Sulk Selch moping around in Amaurot. He really is depressed, as Hythlodaeus claims.
“Parallel to this, every citizen must learn at least one of the other essential trades: weaving (mainly done by the women), carpentry, metalsmithing and masonry. There is deliberate simplicity about these trades; for instance, all people wear the same types of simple clothes and there are no dressmakers making fine apparel.”
This is also a parallel to Amaurot in FF - everyone must dress the same. You’re praised for your creativity, but told you need to change clothes to look like everyone else.
But back to names, and their meanings - all of the names used seem satirical.
“Another complication comes from the Greek meanings of the names of people and places in the work. Apart from Utopia, meaning “Noplace,” several other lands are mentioned: Achora meaning “Nolandia”, Polyleritae meaning “Muchnonsense”, Macarenses meaning “Happiland,” and the river Anydrusmeaning “Nowater”. Raphael’s last name, Hythlodaeus means “dispenser of nonsense” surely implying that the whole of the Utopian text is ‘nonsense’. Additionally the Latin rendering of More’s name, Morus, is similar to the word for a fool in Greek (μωρός). It is unclear whether More is simply being ironic, an in-joke for those who know Greek, seeing as the place he is talking about does not actually exist or whether there is actually a sense of distancing of Hythlodaeus’ and the More’s (“Morus”) views in the text from his own.”
There is a Polyleritae District, and a Macarenses Angle in Amaurot- the references to this book are staring us down, and I have to admit that I’m hella curious about what this says/implies about the Ascians - or what it says about what ended them.

These are so neat! Could I get one for Ibara Kado, 6th Sun of the 2nd Astral Moon?
Child of Thaliak, Blessed of Water. Born under the grace of the Scholar. Knowledge is your bread and butter, ever studious in many a subject. Random trivia spills forth from you, but you tends to prize the pursuit of knowledge above all. You are happiest with your nose in a tome, but tend to isolate yourself from the world around you.
And now, the reading.
The Cards (Astral means Upright, Umbral means Reverse)
1. Astral Ace of Staves - Inspiration. Power. Creation. Beginnings. Potential.
2. Umbral Two of Knives - Indecision. Confusion. Information overload.
3. Umbral Six of Knives - Cannot move on. Carrying baggage.
4. Umbral Two of Staves - Fear of the unknown. Lack of planning.
5. Umbral Five of Crowns - Continuation of Legacy through passing of power.
6. Astral Lady of Irons - Prisoner in repose. One who wears her chains elegantly, her burdens define her.
The Interpretation
The Ace of Staves is a unique card, for its meaning is wholly dependent on the card following it to define it. When combined with the Two of Knives, it tells of a new beginning with great potential, and no idea of how to utilize it. Too many ways to start the project, too many paths for it to go and an inability to simply pick one for fear of lost potential and chances. Due to this, the Six of Knives says you cannot move on from the starting point. With too many what-if’s bogging you down and not a lot of planning, you are left spinning your wheels.. according to the Two of Staves at least. The reason is clear... The Five of Crowns states that this project isn;t your own, but one inherited by another. You will require assistance to get the project off in any direction. Seek aid from the Lady of Irons. She is one who is willing to take on any number of projects in order to gain experience and hopefully gain attention.

Hello! \o/ Are you still doing fortune reads? They are so cool! :D If you could do one for Teledji? But only if your box isn't exploding with requests! The date I picked for him is 7th Sun of the 4th Umbral Moon! I picked the date I created the blog for him, it felt somewhat fitting! @high-stakes-gambler
Child of Rhalgr, Blessed of Thunder. Born under the grace of the Destroyer, you are one who understands that great strength is needed to allow both yourself and others to grow. One must destroy personal barriers to growth, be it previous beliefs or physical chains, in order to broaden horizons. By that respect, one must also break down untamed land and earth to create paths for others to follow.
And now, the reading.
The Cards (Astral means Upright, Umbral means Reverse)
1. Astral Three of Irons - Bonds forged from shared obligation.
2. Astral Lord of Rings - The Philanthropist. One who has financial security and control, who uses their wealth wisely to benefit themselves and others.
3. Umbral Five of Knives - Open to change. Past resentment.
4. Astral Four of Rings - Control. Stability. Security. Possession. Conservatism.
5. Astral Four of Cups - Meditation. Contemplation. Apathy. Re-evaluation.
6. Umbral Lord of Irons - The caged beast. One who rants and rails about injustices as they are punished.
The Interpretation
According to the Astral Three of Irons, you will forge bonds through shared obligation. This could be a business venture or a mission, or anything else that will require several people to face trials together. In one of these ventures, you shall meet the Astral Lord of Rings, a Philanthropist who uses their funds to benefit others. This is a vision of what you could be, according to the Umbral Five of Knives, so long as you open yourself up to change. By the Astral Four of Rings, you must seek to control your life and gain stability. This can be gained through meditation and re-evaluation of your life, as told by the Astral Four of Cups. If you do, this vision of what you can be WILL be yours.... if not? The Umbral Lord of Irons speaks that all you shall be remembered as is akin to a caged beast, snarling at injustices as you end up punished for your latest scheme or past sins.

A fortune please, Ishita Maryam 12/32.
Same birthday as Ser Amon? Then that means you are...
Child of Althyk, Blessed of Earth. Born under the grace of the Keeper, you are intimately familiar with time and its cost. Time is precious to you, and you know how to manage it. Projects, loved ones, work, all must have time made for it, and you do it well. People who waste your time are little better than trash in your eyes, and woe be unto those who cause serious deviations in your plans.
And now, the reading.
The Cards (Astral means Upright, Umbral means Reverse)
1. Astral Five of Cups - Loss. Regret. Disappointment. Despair. Bereavement.
2. Umbral Ace of Knives - Confusion. Chaos. Lack of clarity.
3. Astral Two of Knives - Choices. Truce. Stalemate. Blocked emotions.
4. Umbral Six of Knives - Cannot move on. Carrying baggage.
5. Astral Lord of Irons - Man who willingly accepts the fallout/faults of his actions.
6. Astral Three of Crowns - Finding common ground between several powers.
The Interpretation
The Astral Five of Cups speaks of loss and despair. In this time, the Umbral Ace of Knives tells that you will be lost and confused, the loss being so potent that it will seem as if your whole world has shattered. According to both the Astral Two and Umbral Six of Knives, you will find yourself unable to move on, spinning your wheels in the throes of grief and despair. But you are not alone... The Astral Lord of Irons suggests you learn to accept your faults, for in this loss you will learn many things about yourself that you were never forced to confront. By accepting these faults, you will find a means to move on.. and by the Astral Three of Crowns, figure a way to find common ground between yourself and others who suffered this loss, and work together to find new paths forward.

If you're not bombarded for fortunes, may I request one for Amon? 32nd Sun of the 6th Umbral Moon. Thank you kindly!
Before I begin, I apologize for the long wait. Life has been busy, but now I am back and hopefully able to do these more often ^^
1. Umbral Five of Crowns - Continuation of Legacy through passing of power.
2. Astral Balance - The Heaven of Fire. Nald'Thal. A portent of great fortune amassing. Possibly represents someone close who is just, fair, honest or philanthropic.
3. Umbral Knave of Knives - The Charlatan. All talk and no action, one who is quick of wit and feet who will never deliver on promises and is quick to run away.
4. Umbral Knave of Irons - Slaver. one who places burdens on others without thought to anything but personal gain.
5. Umbral Ace of Knives - Confusion. Chaos. Lack of clarity.
6. Umbral Ace of Rings - Lost opportunity. Lack of planning or foresight.
The Interpretation
The Umbral Five of Crowns tells of inherited power, gained from one’s predecessors. According to the Astral Balance, the power comes from someone close to you that you admire greatly, power that has been amassed over a long period of time. Or at least, that is how they should have been. According to the Umbral Knave of Knives and Umbral Knave of Irons, the one you would inherit from is one who will neither fulfill their promises nor allow you to actually gain more power from them, finding you far too useful as a minion to allow such power and freedom. Due to this, the Umbral Ace of Knives warns that you will enter into a period of confusion, with no obvious path forward save continuing the status quo. But worry not.. for the Umbral Ace of Rings states that your predecessor, lacking actual planning and foresight, will lose their amassed power. Whether you are able to gain what is owed to you is unsure, but you will no doubt have plans in place to ensure your own survival, Blessed of Althyk.

The Fool’s Path: A Hildebrand Style Adventure (part 2)
(Before reading, please play Agent of Inquiry on loop for proper mood setting ^^)
Last time, my robotic assistant and I made our way to the Gold Saucer, gleaming beacon of gambling and hope for those who would seek jobs in the current Ul’dahn job market. Seriously, finding ANY kind of meaningful employment that actually paid in Ul’dah was harder to find than Raubahn’s left arm. I mean, what did Teledji do with the thing, eat it?
Morbid humor aside, Kikiyo and I parked our mounts at the Saucer Stables and I decided to ask the nearest employee about odd things happening. Kikiyo, meanwhile, was doing her best to solve the logic puzzle that was a hacked together Tetris program that I somehow put onto a tomestone for her. Still discovering all the odd things I made for her/in her/with her, but that’s 100+ hours of my memory that is nothing but a blur of work, home-brewed energy drinks and the dying screams of roughly thirty Allagan Nodes that were sacrificed for the greater good.
“Hello Miss, Joe Okeya, wandering Fortune Teller and freelance Inspector of all things mysterious and odd. Have you seen anything off recently?” I asked, slipping the lass a few silver Allagan pieces that were more discrete than simply handing a sack full of gil.
Taking a look at my totally above board tip, she carefully accepted it with a smile and bow. “Welcome to the Gold Saucer! I’m sorry to say that even if there were odd things happening about the Saucer, I cannot talk of such things to complete strangers. Especially shady individuals attempting to play at being an investigator in Master Manderville’s own Saucer.” With a bright smile and a bow, she simply waved me off. Not wanting to cause a scene, I left, a few silver pieces poorer and shocked to all hell that someone actually wasn;t forthcoming with information for once. Did someone hold a seminar about operational security when I wasn’t looking?
“Master Okeya” My loyal assistant called out to me. Walking towards her, she motioned to one of the other employees who did his level best to ignore her. “I have inquired with this employee about mysterious happenings occurring within the confines of the vicinity and he has not been forthcoming in either an positive or negative manner. Further questioning has only caused him to insist on his silent treatment.” Curious, Kikiyo and I began to wave at him, but he wasn’t going to stop his cold shoulder routine anytime soon. Finding no way of breaking him without crude psychological torture that has been banned in several countries involving ear worms or annoying sounds that should NOT be (or violence), Kikiyo and I moved off to a spot to speak quietly.
“If nothing was happening, they wouldn’t be acting odd.” I say as I try to work through my thoughts. “Generally, employees won’t want to talk with guests or strangers about stuff like this...”
“Aha! So if we dress up as employees, we can slip into their confidence and they will tell us what we want to know!”
“As good a plan as any, Master Okeya.” My brilliance obviously awed my unemotive companion.
“Where shall we procure the uniforms required?”
Cackling, I pull two glamour plates from my sleeve and hand one to Kikiyo. “Luckily, I came prepared! Now, activate the plate and let’s go!” A bright flash of light engulfs us both... and eventually leaves our current outfits transformed in a reflection of the outfits contained within the plates.
“Hmm... this isn’t right...”
“I make this look good, Master Okeya.”
Will I figure out the best fix for this fashion disaster? Will we learn what oddity plagues the Gold Saucer? And more importantly... do these fishnets make my Lalafell butt look big? These questions and more may or may not be answered in the next amusing episode of The Fool’s Path! A Hildebrand Style Adventure!
#ffxiv rp#fool's path#Can we get to actual investigation please?#But seriously#do they make my butt look fat?

Before I begin this round of fortune telling...
tl;dr, Altering how I do fortunes a bit since there’s an intriguing byplay between different in-game Zodiacs, apologizing to folks who supported my Kickstarter for not being able to bring it to fruition, and apologizing to Lalafell everywhere. Read more to see full disclosure.
I have been reminded that both Zodiacs we know of, eastern and western, exist in Eorzea alongside the Six Heavens. While it is a downright pain to try and figure out what element and beast you are born of from each Heavensturn, I will do my best to input the Western Zodiac as well. And more importantly, how the interactions play with eachother.
Alternatively, I’ll just put all that text into an actual document and not really worry about it. Honestly, that is something I should have done from the get go >.> Ah well, hindsight is 20/20, especially for fortune tellers.
In any case! I’ll be working through my backlog of fortunes starting today in-between bouts of Shadowbringer breaks.
In other news... I must apologize heavily to two groups of people. The first are the ones who supported my failed Kickstarter for my Deck of Sixty. I’ll likely start up a Patreon or something to that effect, though I will do my research first on how best to conduct it to ensure everyone gets what they wish for while helping to bring the deck into fruition. I have not given up my dream on making the Deck a reality, I just require methods on proper signal boosting that doesn’t involve paid advertising services.
Finally, I apologize to my fellow Lalafell. Especially @yulu-and-co, @lalafellow and everyone else who has been supportive of Joe and his adventures. The reason why.. is because Joe caught the bunny bug. The in story reason why will be revealed in the upcoming update of the Fool’s Path, but.. for now, here’s a look at how Joe will look for the foreseeable future (at least until new hairs are made available)
Why did I turn Joe into a bunny?
Because he suffers more for it. Being Joe is suffering, and he has been FAR too happy of late ^^ Evil? yes, of course! Fetish bait? That’s the point! Excuse to get Joe in heels? You betcha! In any case, that’s all from me newswise, so fortune favor you all!
#minor update#FFXIV#Fortune's Friends#fortune's fools#I really feel like I'm betraying Lalafell everywhere though...#But... BUNNY!

If you're still doing fortunes, Kaine Borlaaq, 6/1(June1)
Child of Oschon, Blessed of Wind. Born under the grace of the Wanderer, you are one who truly understands the meaning of freedom. A wandering spirit, you go wherever the wind may take you, never truly satisfied with staying in one place. An adventurer through and through, you seek new shores and new experiences. More importantly, you are ever willing to share tales of such and guide others to far off shores alongside you… for no adventure is truly as grand as one shared with good friends.
And now, the reading.
The Cards (Astral means Upright, Umbral means Reverse)
1. Astral Five of Staves - Disagreement. Competition. Strife. Tension. Conflict.
2. Umbral Lord of Cups - One who is emotionally manipulative. Moody and volatile, he sees people as playthings.
3. Umbral Five of Irons - Taking up the burden of another
4. Umbral Arrow - The Hell of Wind. Oschon. A portent of wandering lost, of being directionless and listless. May represent someone who is a bandit, pirate, or one who defiles land and sea.
5. Umbral Lady of Knives - Overly-emotional. Bitchy. Cold-hearted.
6. Astral Knave of Knives- The Wanderer. Curious, energetic, restless. One who is always looking to the horizon.
The Interpretation
The Five of Staves speaks of a disagreement you will have with the manipulative Lord of Cups. The Five of Irons tell that they seek to manipulate you into taking up a burden for them… with consequences if you do not. Thanks to this, the Arrow is clouded, and you find yourself wandering lost, unable to decide what to do. Amusingly, it is the Lady of Knives who points the way, her antagonistic disposition allowing you to see how toxic your environment truly is, and that the Lord of Cups has no true power over you. The Knave of Knives is who you are meant to be, Child of Oschon… a wanderer and adventurer, not who these others try to make you to be. Embrace your dreams and wandering spirit and seek out new shores once more.

Note
If you're still doing Fortune Asks could you do mine please, if your still taking them that is, Yuki Setsura, 22nd sun of the 6th Astral moon. :)
Child of Nophica, Blessed of Earth. Born under the grace of the Matron, you are familiar with nurturing life. You seek to help those you are close to grow to their full potential, and sometimes even strangers as well. You tend them as they grow, assisting them as best you can without stifling them.. and woe be unto those who threaten to stifle that growth.
And now, the reading.
The Cards (Astral means Upright, Umbral means Reverse)
1. Umbral Five of Cups - Moving on. Acceptance. Forgiveness.
2. Astral Three of Staves - Preparation. Foresight. Enterprise. Expansion.
3. Astral Six of Rings - Generosity. Sharing wealth. Charity. Prosperity.
4. Astral Knave of Knives - The Wanderer. Curious, energetic, restless. One who is always looking to the horizon.
5. Astral Five of Staves- Conflict avoidance. Diversity. Agree to disagree.
6. Umbral Five of Crowns - Continuation of Legacy through passing of power.
The Interpretation
The Five of Cups speaks of a need to be accepted by those around you. To this end, the Three of Staves tells that all your plans will revolve around this singular idea. To make this a reality, the Six of Rings tells of you giving of yourself, generously sharing your wealth to those about you. The reason is clear, for you are the Knave of Knives, one who is ever wandering… and though you travel far and wide, you seek to leave a good impression on those whose paths you cross. The ideal way of doing this is by following the Five of Staves, and learning to accept the differences of those around you. Material wealth and items are temporary things, but a loving heart that can accept those around you will be accepted in turn… and in this way, the Five of Crowns promises that you shall create a lasting legacy that shall follow in your footsteps and ensure that anywhere you settle for the day will remember you and treat you well.
