Sometimes a family is...
a lonely black cat with trust issues
Tumblr media
(who has to learn that sometimes it's okay to accept help)
a kind capybara that's happy to share in its luck
Tumblr media
(who portrays how even the most steady presence in your life might need a hand once in a while)
a good dog that just wants to be friends
Tumblr media
(who has to learn that sometimes making real friends means learning how not to follow bad ones)
a heroic secretarybird that faces bullies for a stranger
Tumblr media
(who shows how sometimes constantly fighting for the right thing can leave one exhausted to the bone)
and a kleptomaniac lemur that just wants to stare at its reflection
Tumblr media
(who learns how to let go of the things that don't matter and grab hold of the people who do)

Johnny is NOT stupid because he doesn’t know what a dinosaur is. In the 1890s American education wasn’t standardized and dinosaurs and evolution theory wouldn’t have been taught at most schools in the Bible Belt, which Kentucky is a part of. But he IS a dropout / delinquent. I beg of you do not confuse his issues with authority with being less intelligent

I will genuinely never forgive anyone involved in making The Imitation Game for their absolute travesty of Alan Turing’s story.
He was intensely autistic, and gay, and *kind*.
He mentored people below him in the programme - including women, who pretty much everyone else was crappy to.
He had terrible allergies and went cycling in a gas mask in the country to avoid then, and when he got overstimulated at parties he pulled incredibly daft elaborate “walking into a cupboard” leaving gags to handle them that left everyone screaming on the floor despite the silliness.
He got on really well with kids and never talked down to them. He gave his neighbours his sugar rations on their kids’ birthdays so she could always make them birthday cakes - even when he was being persecuted after the war, even when he was suffering horrible side effects from the tortures they put him through.
He was such an utterly, genuinely lovely human being, and he deserved so much damn better, and at the very *least* he deserved to be portrayed as who he was in the 21st fucking century instead of falling into a whole slew of horrifically harmful stereotypes that erased the fucking gift he was to us all over again.

Transfeminine readings of Anthy are a good way of weeding out bioessentialists who believe a story about girlhood and patriarchy must strictly be about cis girlhood - when in reality, everything that Anthy represents can just as easily, if not more suitably be applied if she is a trans woman.

Chronology of Major Gyjo moments (sources cited)
Gyro refuses to leave Johnny behind despite making it a point that he won't be slowed down by him
Tumblr media
Chapter 14 - Across the Arizona Desert: Continuing on the Shortest Route
2) After being attacked, Johnny states the only one he trusts is Gyro
Tumblr media
Also, early example of Johnny being willing to give the corpse up to save Gyro (even before Sugar Mountain!)
Tumblr media
Chapter 27: Tusk (Part 3)
3) Gyro disobeying his father and familial tradition by giving in to his urge to save Johnny (and thereby fight like a 'true man' for what he wants)
Tumblr media
Chapter 35: The True Man's World (Part 3)
4) Gyro putting his faith in Johnny to defeat their attacker. When Johnny thinks he's failed, he cradles Gyro's face and asks for forgiveness. (it's a major moment. to me)
Tumblr media
Chapter 44: A Silent Way (Part 5)
5) Ok this one is just a little sus but I'm putting it in anyway: Gyro dreaming of that time he slept with one of his patients, only to immediately wake up and have a domestic scene with Johnny. For what purpose...?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chapter 45: The Promised Land Sugar Mountain (Part 1)
6) Johnny gives up the corpse parts for Gyro (again), immediately followed by them drinking away their sorrows into the sunset. Who's doing it like them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chapter 48: Tubular Bells (Part 1)
7) Gyro finds the Golden Rectangle, previously described as, “… the foundation for every perfect structure for beauty" (Chapter 43: A Silent Way, Part 4) in Johnny eyes, and refuses to answer Johnny's question about where he's finding it. The implications of what Gyro thinks of Johnny's physical appearance are obvious.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chapter 52: Wrecking Ball (Part 2)
8) Gyro sacrifices his hand, his only other point of reference for the Golden Rectangle, in order to save Johnny from a hit he probably could have tanked. Even Gyro looks a little surprised at himself... Also, they are all over each other this arc. Gyro is especially protective.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And, a little later:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chapter 53: Wrecking Ball (Part 3)
9) Once it's revealed that Valentine intends to kill the rest of the racers (at least the ones who pose a threat to him), and makes an attempt on Johnny's life, Gyro attempts to convince Johnny to drop out, implying that he would drop out with him.
Tumblr media
Of course, this is immediately followed by Johnny begging Gyro to, at the very least, help Lucy and see what she knows about the corpse parts. Seeing Johnny's distress at being so close to his goal only to have it snatched away from him convinces Gyro to stay in the race (something that will ultimately get him killed) and theorize how they can use the spin to defeat Valentine (via the stirrups). He tries to play it off but goddamn he is in love with him.
Tumblr media
Chapter 72: Ticket to Ride (Part 2)
10) Shuiesha coloring may imply that Johnny is wearing Gyro's shirt beneath his own?? It's got the same collar and everything.
Tumblr media
First appearance of this coloring choice is Chapter 63: 7 Days in a Week
11) Exchange of secrets no one else knows (they are each other's most important person!)
Tumblr media
This panel in particular:
Tumblr media
Chapter 76: D4C (Part 9)
12) And last but not least, thee set of chapter titles ever, in which Valetine attempts to bargain with Johnny to spare his life in return for bringing back Gyro. Johnny refuses, not because of any moral quandary about saving the life of an evil man, but because the Gyro brought back would not be the same. On top of that, he recognizes Valentine as a liar.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When it's all over, Johnny just breaks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that's the end of the chapter!
Chapters 88 and 89: Break My Heart, Break Your Heart (Parts 1 & 2)
13) Johnny's Goodbye (I like this scene more in b+w what can I say)
Tumblr media
Chapter 95: The World of Stars and Stripes (Outro)
Obviously Johnny and Gyro have a lot of smaller moments too, but these are the ones that come to mind when I think of them!

i love love love how casually rgu portrays grooming. akio defends and compliments utena for the thing that she gets in trouble for the most - her uniform, building trust between them and setting him apart from the other authority figures in her life. akio continues to present himself as progressive when he isn't in the slightest to further align himself with utena’s values by telling the admin to go against the rules HE put in place.
i also like how the lighting changes to show the birdcage-shaped rose garden as akio talks to utena - the same one that anthy is figuratively trapped in. akio is beginning to coax utena into this cage, ensaring her in his trap.
ALSO the way he corrects himself from saying "my sister’s" to "my" is so filthy and gross. no longer is he trying to maintain the bond of him being "utena's friend's brother" but rather reestablishing himself as "utena's friend". that change in wording shortens the divide between them.
the three candles being the three strikes is one of my favourite things the show does like. ever. the fact that the candles almost get blown out in so many instances shows that these weren't three singular grand actions, but a long process of slowly breaking utena down - blowing shallowly over and over until the flame goes out, rather than one solid puff. also illustrating that akio didn't just push his boundaries only three times, but multiple times, the three that blew out the candles being the most severe.
akio remains a perfect representation of abuse of authority. god i love him. one of the most interesting and horrific characters ever

RGU handles the topics of grooming and sexual abuse well imo, in particular I think that Utena being groomed by Akio was scarily realistic. The way she misinterprets her own feelings of uncomfortableness and fear as being in love, how she begins losing sight of her identity, how she loses her appetite and hesitates to share what's going on with her friends, the way it portrays the very real feeling of "I feel uncomfortable and scared around this person, but I don't know why because they're just so nice to me, they care about me, it's not like they're hurting me" and as a former victim of grooming its just. OUGH. It's simultaneously scary to feel so seen but also very cathartic

"you can't call people eggs because some have internalized bigotries and they will push themselves further into the closet" personally i think it's good to force others to face their bigotries
