Okay not to be nitpicky about my mother fandom but some of ya'll seem to understand what the world they lived in was like. WE LIVE IN THE WORLD THEY LONGED TO SEE. THE 20th CENTURY IS HAPPIER.
-As of 1832 slavery was still legal more places than it was illegal, France included.
-The global literacy rate was estimated to be between 12 and 19 percent verses 87.4 as of 2023.
-The percentage of people living in extreme poverty was in the high 80s vs 9.18 as of 2017.
-There wasn't a single country where women were allowed to vote.
-The waves of democracy had yet to hit.
-Smallpox still existed.
Yeah, when they were done weeping for joy at the comparative utopia we live in some of the boys would start to pick apart the flaws and injustices that are still out there and start working to undo them. But to them we live in a world worth dying for and it's a tragedy that they didn't get to see it. And it's a tragedy that so many people seem to think things are just as bad as they where.

Men, devoid of name and hour
With direction gathered power
Stripped of selfhood, each must be
