Nietzsche’s ubermensch.
Nietzsche’s idea of the overman is a noteworthy concept. Despite being mentioned very briefly in the prologue of Thus spoke Zarathustra, we can still make sense of the idea. We know Nietzsche had an idea of how a man should be more than just a human who is all too human.

In the book, as described by Zarathustra, an overman is someone who is willing to give it all up for the sake of the enhancement of humanity. In order for that, the overman has to be someone who has the ability to establish his own values while living in a world where we have many people who are unaware that they, themselves, live their lives according to pregiven values.
The overman has his own values, he is independent, and because of these two traits, he dominates others that live a life based on pregiven values and a mindset that encourages them to follow the herd. There are however, certain things as to what would constitute as an overman.
The first would be to stay away from the morality of the "Herd" around him. So, what is this herd? Who are they exactly? The ‘Herd’ is often attributed to the mediocre, of only average, not very different masses. They lack any individual will and they simply live by group instincts.
In Beyond Good and Evil, Nietzsche says:
“A smaller, almost ridiculous type, a herd animal, something eager to please, sickly, and mediocre”.
This herd has two types which is the last man and the slave.
The last man being a typical mediocre man that strives solely for comfort and contentment, it is an end that makes him lazy. He is devoid of any creative urge within himself and he is a blind person, blind towards higher values which can push him towards greater creativity.
And then the slave is a weak and sickly human that suffers from his own existence and he is filled with resentment, a hatred for life that is generated through his own weakness towards the reality of life and because of it, he feels the need to be overpowering and threatening.
The second point for the overman would be that he would be curious about his world, asking questions that others are afraid of asking themselves. He must be a free spirit. The free spirit is the one that knows all values are relative and because of it, he is able to create his own values. The free spirit does not have any intrinsic characteristics or qualities but rather he is always undergoing self-overcoming and reinventing himself.
“He is called a free spirit who thinks differently from what, on the basis of his origin, environment, his class and profession, or on the basis of the dominant views of the age, would have been expected of him” – A quote from the book All too human.
And thirdly, he is able to consistently reinvent himself but this, of course, is not possible if he cannot assert himself in the real world by the means of the Will to Power. For now, I would say to take the will to power in the literal sense as someone who has the will to dominate, to have power over themselves and others. But I will definitely be coming back to this in the future in a not so far away time since it is worthy to talk about separately.
In the book, thus spoke Zarathustra he quotes:
Man is something that shall be overcome. Man is a rope, tied between beast and overman — a rope over an abyss. What is great in man is that he is a bridge and not an end.
From this quote, we can speak for the need for self-overcoming. It is important that you overcome yourself, that you rule over your own existence and become somewhat of a bridge that will lead others to greatness.
The abyss here could refer to failure, that maybe, following such a path could be hard and stressful but the goal is to cross it and to keep going since crossing it, is not the end. If that sounds confusing, think of it as reaching a goal to reach another, but not having this defined end.
You can become a bridge to the overman through the process of overcoming yourself and by criticizing your own values. However, the overman itself is not defined in the sense that it gives us an objective meaning or some absolutely known path.
