Xena and Gabrielle share what is clearly a break-up kiss in the year of our lord 1996 on syndicated television. Xena’s final expression, the one she won’t let Gabrielle see, is all wide-eyed distress and it just slays me.

The Cultural Appropriation Episode •it takes place somewhere other than Greece •A beautiful woman/shirtless man teaches Xena/Gabrielle some spiritual magic •interesting white savior overtones •"spirit fight" •bonus points if some none-Greek god shows up

The Deep Episode™ •Either Gabrielle or Xena has died/will die •flashback to an important moment in Xena’s past •bonus points if it’s a gay flashback •Xena and Gabrielle get into a fight •or they go on some sort of spiritual journey •Gabrielle is told at least once that her soul is pure and she is very powerful •Xena is told at least once that she is fighting a great darkness inside of her •at the end Xena tells Gabrielle something like “Gabrielle you are the light of my life” or “You are everything that’s good about me” •They have a gal pal moment

I love how in this very last shot of them lying down together Gabrielle lays her hand over Xena’s midriff and Xena lifts her head up to look and then just settles herself back down again smiling. It’s like the moment when she realizes Gabrielle feels the same way she does about her and she’s finally able to show her true feelings for her without feeling guilty about it anymore or holding back. Because lesbihonest…. Xena fell first. Gabrielle had a bad case of hero worship for awhile but she didn’t fall in love first. Xena did. And in this shot you see Gabrielle start to show her affection for her instead of the other way around. It’s really cute and sweet.
