It was kind of a joke between me and a friend ("you wouldn't judge someone for having gone rock climbing with a bunch of different people") but honestly the more I thought about it the more I bought into it unironically because:

It is a physical activity done with one or more partners

You should only go rock climbing with people you trust to not let you fall

You should not go rock climbing with someone who is drunk or currently incapable of rational decision-making

Some people get super super super into rock climbing and do not shut up about all the places they have climbed and how many are left on their bucket list and these people are usually men between the ages of 20 and 35 and like it's fine dude I'm glad you're happy but I don't know what most of those mountains even are

While many consider it a fun activity, pressuring someone into climbing when they don't want to (or ignoring their feelings and just dangling them off a cliff,) could cause both psychological and physical trauma

There is no moral value to it whatsoever. Who you have gone rock climbing with (or whether you have rock climbed at all) has no bearing on who you are as a person. Imagine telling someone "it's not that heights make you nauseous, it's just that you haven't found the right person to belay you!" or "you need to save your first time rock climbing for someone special." That would be absurd.

For some people it is a deep and moving personal experience.

historically I have not asked myself "will this aggravate my hip flexor injury" before participating when perhaps I should have 😔

(Smith College anon again) Knowing that the Smith College girls for i-d thing is from an old photoshoot makes much more sense now! I'd never seen the photos before but they do make a very good art reference and I definitely see why people use it as inspiration for early dnp drawings.

To my knowledge there is no shrine to the photos on campus (they probably exist in the Neilson archives somewhere though) but I'm probably not the person who'd know about it if there was (a SWAG or art student might be familiar with it + the campus was under a ton of construction while I was there, we literally had no library). I think it's also because at Smith I can almost guarantee you there are hundreds of photos similar to that one on people's phones or casually posted on Instagram right now, so for someone who went there it doesn't stand out as anything out of the ordinary I guess? (I imagine in 2004 it might have been a bigger thing than today) If not for the size of the mattress and wooden bedframe (they're bare metal frames with tiny ass twin beds last I knew) you could've told me that photoshoot was last week and I would've been like "yeah that looks like a normal Tuesday at Smith"

Anyway, thank you for the explanation (and sorry for cluttering your blog to yap about Smith's culture and historically women's colleges being very gay)

As someone who went to Smith College, can someone please explain why dnp stuff keeps getting tagged as "smith college girls for i-d magazine"??? I mean the school is very gay I can confirm that but otherwise I have no idea what dnp have to do with smith and I feel like I'm missing something every time I get jumpscared seeing the name of my old school lmao

it was part of a shoot done by richard kern for i-D magazine about the students at smith college in 2003 (x) the entire set is very queer but this photo specifically really resonated with a lot of people because of it's intimacy and vulnerability expressing queer love but ALSO made a fantastic pose prompt for all fan artists so it became a trend to draw your favs in this style (and obviously 2009 dnp not only fit the energy but the aesthetic so well you can see why these two make a beautiful muse for phanart)

I had a dream about a house that genuinely terrified me.

it looked normal from the outside, and lured people inside on the basis of entertainment (think: escape rooms). but once you were in, it kept you. and going from room to room, you’d find the house was much larger than it initially appeared. like implausibly large, with some rooms leading to indoor plazas, complete with water fountains. and the house had to be appeased; if it liked you, it might let you leave (eventually). and if it didn’t like you, it directed the Bad Things in the house to your location. as you explored the house, you’d hear the Bad Things passing through adjacent rooms.

I was in a group of people, and out of them, the house liked me best. so it kept letting me catch glimpses of the front door, down hallways. I was trying to decide whether to run for the door, and risk infuriating the house, when I woke up.
